Speeches have been analyzed from multiple perspectives, yet the literature reveals gaps in the examination of discursive strategies and speech functions. To address this issue, this study aims to uncover the discursive strategies and speech functions utilized by Dr. Tedros, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), in his speeches on managing Covid-19. This qualitative content analysis employs purposive sampling of speeches from YouTube, specifically speeches given at the onset and conclusion of the pandemic.The findings indicate that Dr.Tedrosemployede motive, imperative, metaphorical, hyperbolic, and personification language to convey his message.Furthermore, only three speech functions were identified: statements, commands, and offers. This underscores Dr. Tedros's focus on delivering precise and persuasive information regarding Covid-19 management. This study offers implications for future research and discourse analysis

For instance, utilizing continuous paper-based learning to teach vocabulary resulted in boredom and could demotivate students. Dealing with that, one alternative solution was provided to the problem by implementing the memrise media to be tested in the learning process toteach adjectives. The research objective was to know the effectiveness of using memrise towards students' adjective mastery. Thus, this research used a quasi-experimental design and chose two classes by using cluster random sampling as the sample. The research instrument was tests, the results of which were analyzed using an independent sample t-test. The hypothesis testing results revealed that a significant value of 0.025 was obtained with a significance of α = 0.05. Thus, there was effectiveness in using memrise application toward students' adjective mastery. Furthermore, the N-Gain score for the control class was 0.46, while for the experimental class was 0.58. Therefore, it could be stated that the memrise can be used and is effective as learning mediafor adjectives mastery for seventh grade students of SMP N 3 Pringsewu

Abstract

Google Translate (GT) has been increasingly used by academics in translating their articles into English. Various translation errors are identified in the results produced by GT, limiting its functionality. Our present research had the objectives to: (1) identify errors produced in Indonesian-English GT translation and, based on the previous results, (2) explore strategies for optimizing Indonesian-English GT translation. This qualitative research, employing the Grounded Theory model, analyzed nine abstract documents (ca. 2100 words). There were 144 errors identified in the Indonesian-English GT translation of our documents, consisting of lexical errors (45%), grammatical errors (43.1%), and excessive wording (11.8%). Twelve strategies for modifying the Indonesian documents were proposed in order to assist GT producing better English documents. The strategies were grouped into Avoid, Maintain, and Enhance categories based on the nature of modification done to the documents. Detailed results are presented, followed by the discussion of how the proposed strategies might affect GT functionality and pedagogical practice.
