Thus, this study aims to explore students' perceptions regarding using Mobile Legends to enhance their English narrative writing skills. Fifteen students from a state Indonesian school in Malaysia participated in a qualitative study using questionnaires and interviews. The participants' responses were analyzed using a descriptive and descriptive approach. The results show that the game's characters and backgrounds provide a wealth of material for graphically illustrating story components and substantially enhance descriptive skills, narrative coherence, and linguistic structures. The positive responses from the participants suggest a burgeoning potential for incorporating mobile gaming into language education, fostering a deeper connection between students and language learning. The study provides valuable insights into the positive impact of gamification on language proficiency, offering educators an exciting avenue to explore in creating dynamic and effective learning environments

Abstract

The purpose of this study was twofold: to develop an online learning application compatible with both Android and Windows platforms and to evaluate the effectiveness of an Android-based mobile learning tool in improving English proficiency and student perceptions. This research employed a research and development (R&D) methodology encompassing nine stages: needs assessment, data collection, product design, expert validation, testing, initial revision, trial implementation, second revision, and finalization. Data were collected through tests and questionnaires and analyzed using independent sample t-tests and descriptive statistics. Participants included second-year junior high school students in Central Java. The findings of this study are as follows: first, the validity of the developed product was confirmed through expert validation from media and material specialists, indicating its feasibility for educational use. Second, a statistically significant improvement in students’ test scores was observed, highlighting the effectiveness of the Android-based mobile learning tool. Finally, 75.5% of participants agreed that the application provided a positive learning experience by delivering practical and concise materials on greeting cards, enhancing engagement, and reducing learning monotony. This study demonstrates that Android-based mobile learning media can be a valuable tool for English language instruction.

Abstract

Error Analysis (EA) plays a pivotal role in language education, yet students often perceive it as tedious and challenging. This study addresses this issue by developing innovative EA teaching materials that merge linguistic theory with Islamic values, reflecting the Integrative-Prismatic paradigm unique to Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Raden Intan Lampung. Employing the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model within a Research and Development (R&D) framework, this research focuses on the first three stages: Analysis, Design, and Development. Data were collected through comprehensive questionnaires distributed to third-semester students and English Language Education program lecturers. The needs analysis revealed a strong demand for engaging and contextually relevant materials. Consequently, five thematic chapters were developed, each integrating theoretical insights with practical applications and Islamic perspectives. Expert validation confirmed the materials' relevance and quality, leading to further refinements. The findings indicate a significant potential for these interdisciplinary materials to transform EA education by making it more engaging and culturally resonant. This approach enhances linguistic understanding and enriches students' educational experience by aligning with their cultural and religious contexts. Future research will focus on the implementation and evaluation phases to assess the practical impact of these materials on student learning outcomes

Abstract

In this modern era, easy access to digital media and the internet is a big challenge in reading habits. This research investigates internet usage patterns and reading habits among English students in contemporary educational settings. Drawing on data from a questionnaire survey administered to 53 students at an Islamic college in Jambi, Indonesia, the study explores students' online activities, reading preferences, and perceptions of digital reading materials. The findings show a significant reliance on the Internet for academic and leisure activities, with online news being the main driver of students' reading interest. Despite concerns about content relevance and readability, digital reading materials, especially e-books, and online platforms, have the potential to foster reading engagement and literacy skills. The study also highlights the diverse nature of students' online activities, emphasizing the need for tailored approaches to promote reading habits in the digital age. By adopting innovative teaching methods and utilizing digital resources, educators can create immersive reading experiences that help students navigate and critically evaluate digital information effectively. This research contributes valuable insights into the evolving landscape of reading preferences and the role of technology in shaping literacy practices, informing evidence-based strategies for promoting reading engagement and lifelong learning in educational contexts.

Abstract

Many EFL students struggle to participate actively in classroom discussions due to limited proficiency in English, which can hinder their ability to fully engage and learn. The purpose of this study is to investigate students’ perceptions of language translation techniques used in EFL classroom discussions. The methodological technique used in this study is qualitative. Using qualitative descriptive methodologies, study data was gathered through interviews. Ten XI-grade students from a senior high school in Bengkulu were the subjects of the interview process. According to the results, students feel more at ease in class when their teachers employ translanguaging because it allows them to interact in two languages during class discussions, communicate with teachers effectively, engage in more engaging learning activities, and pick up new vocabulary. While some students acknowledged that they had trouble understanding teachers when they spoke in English, the majority of them understood the significance of English.

Abstract

The rapid development of technology has made an earth-shattering innovation take the world by storm: Artificial Intelligence (AI). This study aims to determine the perceptions and practices of teachers and students in using AI in the classroom. Four university teachers and 30 students were sent questionnaires, and four teachers and 23 students were given online structured interviews.  The results stated that in the student group, as many as 24 respondents (80%) had a good perception of AI, and six respondents (20%) had an excellent perception of AI. Meanwhile, in the teacher group, three respondents (75.0%) had a favorable perception, and one teacher respondent (25.0%) had a very favorable perception of AI. This result is also reinforced by the practice of students' and teachers' perspectives of AI, which state that AI is beneficial in eliciting students’ responses, attracting students’ attention, and increasing their motivation and creativity. Nevertheless, AI is just an intelligent tool; no matter how excellent and optimal the tool is, how much potential humans can utilize depends on the use and the user himself.

Abstract

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has been getting attention as it puts a strong emphasis on specific language needs in various professional and academic settings, meeting the current trend of English education. As a sub-field of ESP, Maritime English (ME) is taught to students who are projected to be involved in the maritime industry. The present study explored the journey of teachers in integrating game-based learning to teach ME. Specifically, it investigated what teachers experienced in teaching ME, how teachers integrated games into teaching ME, and what challenges teachers faced in integrating games into teaching ME. A Collaborative Auto-Ethnographic Inquiry design was implemented in this qualitative study. The data were sourced from the four authors as we shared our experience in teaching from the first time we taught ME. The necessary data were collected through narrative inquiry, photo voice, and semi-structured interviews, followed by a thematic data analysis. The findings revealed challenges that were faced in teaching ME before and after integrating games. Through the discussion, we highlighted how professional teachers should prepare for the class and adapt to the situation in the class.
