Abstract

This research aims to find the main themes and research categories regarding numeracy difficulties (Dyscalculia). For the data taken to fulfil the objectives of this research, the author searched for several relevant sources from Google Scholar and Scopus (SAGE et al. & Francis). Four combinations of keywords determined articles; then the articles were included in the data collection, and researchers applied a systematic literature review method. Articles that will be research sources are limited to the last six years. The dominant research methodology of the articles reviewed is qualitative. The four main themes revealed from the qualitative content analysis are dyscalculia, causes of dyscalculia, cases of dyscalculia, and solutions to overcome dyscalculia. Articles are filtered starting from topic description, eligibility criteria and search strategy. The total number of articles reviewed was 198 from different sources, namely Springer, Elsevier, SAGE, Eric, and Taylor & Francis. Then, it was reviewed again to obtain 87 articles. Then, reviewed again according to the theme in the title, 50 articles were found that were most suitable. Of the 50 articles that are most suitable for deeper study, dyscalculia occurs throughout the world. The cause of dyslexia can be due to developmental errors during pregnancy or other factors such as physical defects or the child's habits. The solution offered by the teacher is to use several learning methods and media that are appropriate for the child's condition.

Abstract

Early reading is the initial level in the process of learning to read. Early reading skills play an important role in developing advanced reading skills. The study aims to determine the effect of applying the whole language approach by using picture storybooks to improve elementary students’ early reading skills in grade III. The research was conducted in Cipinang Besar Selatan. The research applied an experimental study with Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design. Data were collected using 20 multiple-choice question-item tests. Data were analyzed through normality, homogeneity, and paired sample t-test tests. The hypothesis test results indicate t = 3.162 with pvalue of 0.006. The conclusion of the research is that there is a significant positive effect of the whole language approach on third-grade elementary students’ early reading skills. Learning using the whole language approach can be used as an alternative to improving third-grade elementary students’ early reading skills. Picture storybooks make students more interested in reading and picture illustrations help students more easily understand the reading content in the learning material.

Abstract

The development of negative emotions is a problem that manifests in children with tantrums, such as excessive anger. Tantrums can be pathological, so early identification can help teachers handle them in order to prevent long-term negative effects. The study in this paper aims to identify strategies to overcome tantrums in children based on the existentialist philosophy of Martin Heidegger in terms of building responsibility within themselves through four aspects. The use of the research method is qualitative with a case study approach. The data analysis is the triangulation of data acquisition techniques, which includes observation, interviews, and documents. Observations were conducted on one tantrum-prone child in the second grade. Interviews were conducted with the second-grade and the guidance counselor teachers to determine the appropriate strategies. The research results indicate the findings of several ways of the second-grade teacher strategies and the guidance counselor teacher in overcoming tantrum-prone children at school. Firstly, individual support is required. Secondly, opportunity is given for tantrum-prone children to express their emotions in a conducive environment. Thirdly, opportunity is provided to children to foster their self-awareness to cultivate tolerance among peers. Fourthly, the opportunity is intended for children to express the circumstances that make their tantrums up. Fifthly, the opportunity is addressed to provide rewards in the form of verbal reinforcement when tantrum-prone children exhibit positive behavior. Sixthly, the opportunity refers to providing a humanistic approach, redirecting the child's emotions in a conducive environment, and providing a sense of safety and security by hugging the children when they are in high levels of emotional distress during tantrums. The research conclusion is that strategies for overcoming tantrum-prone children consist of six methods, including opportunities to provide individual support, express their emotions and circumstances, provide children’s self-awareness building, give rewards, and conduct a humanistic approach.

Abstract

In terms of child development, this paper explains the character building that aligns with Pancasila's values. The research in this paper aims to analyze character building in accordance with Pancasila values from the perspective of the development of elementary school-aged children. The research uses a qualitative descriptive strategy. The steps are observation, interviews, and documentation techniques as an approach to data collection. In the observation process, the researcher conducted observations in the classroom. The interviewed informants were the school principal and class teacher. The information was collected through published literature. The data that have been found were triangulated and tested for validity to validate the findings. The research results indicate that from a child development perspective, character development can be divided into three domains, namely cognitive development, linguistic development, and social and emotional development. Learning environment that encourages students' original thinking can be created through cognitive development. To help children develop their language skills, educators should teach them consistently how to speak politely in formal and informal languages. Students are expected to take responsibility for themselves, others, and their academic commitments as part of their social and emotional growth.

Abstract

Intellectual intelligence is not the only main focus of education but it is also the ability to think critically and read critically as a key element in preparing future generations. This research aims to investigate the impact of parenting styles on the development of children’s critical thinking, critical reading, and multiple intelligences in the educational context. The data collection techniques used were interviews and observation. The research data validity used source and technical triangulations. The research participants were elementary to middle school-level children who came from different parenting styles. Democratic parenting style appears as a strong factor to influence the development of children's critical thinking and critical reading skills. Parents who open the discussions, provide encouragement to question information, and provide space for exploration against the ideas at home, are positively correlated with higher levels of children's critical thinking. In the context of multiple intelligences, a democratic parenting style is also proven to play a key role. This research also provides limitations, especially in terms of the generalization of findings because it uses a case study design with a limited sample.
