Abstract

This study aims to enhance the listening comprehension of seventh-grade students (Class VII.3) at State Junior High School 10 Tanjungpinang through the implementation of a Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) approach using podcasts on Spotify. The CRT framework was employed to address the monotony of conventional instructional media and to increase student engagement by incorporating content that resonates with their cultural background. This classroom action research was conducted over two cycles. The results indicate a significant improvement in students’ listening comprehension: the average pretest score of 63 rose to 86 following the Cycle I podcast intervention. Podcasts proved to be a flexible and engaging learning medium that also encouraged students to think critically about the information presented. Furthermore, the teacher’s role in fostering an inclusive learning environment contributed to the success of this approach. These findings suggest that CRT‑based podcast integration offers an innovative solution for teaching listening comprehension.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the ability of tenth-grade students at SMA Batik 2 Surakarta in writing English descriptive texts using Heaton's framework. The study evaluates five aspects: content, organization, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. Using a descriptive quantitative method, students were given a descriptive writing test and assessed based on Heaton’s rubric. The results show that most students fall into the Good to Average category across all indicators. However, grammar, organization, and mechanics remain the most challenging areas. Vocabulary and content are relatively well-mastered. These findings suggest the need for more structured instruction in grammar and writing conventions.

Abstract

This literature review explores the role of translanguaging in English Language Teaching (ELT) within Indonesia’s multilingual context. As a country with over 700 regional languages, Indonesia presents a linguistically complex educational landscape that challenges traditional monolingual paradigms. Drawing upon eleven recent empirical and theoretical studies published between 2023 and 2025, this review identifies the pedagogical benefits, strategies, teacher and student attitudes, and challenges of implementing translanguaging in EFL classrooms. The findings indicate that translanguaging enhances students’ conceptual understanding, linguistic confidence, and classroom participation by leveraging their full linguistic repertoires. Common strategies include bilingual discussions, L1 scaffolding, and multimodal teaching. Despite its demonstrated effectiveness, resistance persists among some educators due to entrenched monolingual ideologies. The study underscores the need for curriculum reform and professional development that incorporates translanguaging principles to build a more inclusive and context-sensitive ELT framework. It concludes that translanguaging is not merely a teaching strategy but a transformative practice that promotes linguistic justice and sustainable language education in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms, formation processes, and functions of register used by PSS Sleman supporters, particularly the Brigata Curva Sud (BCS) community. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected through observation, note-taking, recording, and documentation, sourced from chants, conversations, supporter attributes, and social media. The data were analyzed using referential and pragmatic analysis methods based on Halliday’s theory of register. The results indicate that the registers used by PSS Sleman supporters appear in the forms of words, acronyms, and abbreviations, such as PSS Per Sempre, Vinci Per Noi, Laskar Sembada, PSS Siamonoi, Ora Muntir, Curva Sud, Super Elja, and BCS. These registers are formed through borrowings from English, Italian, and Javanese. English is used to express universal loyalty, Italian reflects the influence of European ultras culture, while Javanese emphasizes local identity. In terms of function, the register serves as a marker of group identity, a marker of style, and a means of concealing information from outsiders. Overall, register plays an important role in strengthening solidarity, maintaining group cohesion, and shaping the collective identity of PSS Sleman supporters as part of Indonesian football culture.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has brought significant changes to governmental communication practices, particularly in the ways public institutions disseminate information, construct institutional images, and establish relationships with the public. In this context, the Regional Personnel, Education, and Training Agency (Badan Kepegawaian, Pendidikan, dan Pelatihan—BKPP) of Semarang City utilizes social media, especially video-based content, as a primary channel for public communication. This study aims to examine the communication practices of BKPP Semarang City on social media from the perspective of the ethnography of communication by applying the SPEAKING analytical framework proposed by Dell Hymes. Employing a qualitative approach, this study analyzes BKPP’s video uploads as speech events that are embedded within specific social, cultural, and institutional contexts. The findings reveal that the elements of setting, participants, and ends consistently represent bureaucratic communication oriented toward policy dissemination, institutional image-building, and the reinforcement of the role of civil servants in public service. Socially, these communication practices produce meanings related to the ideal identity of civil servants as professional, ethical, and responsible actors, while simultaneously constructing a symbolic relationship between the government and the public framed by proximity, openness, and policy legitimacy in the digital era.

Abstract

This study investigated collaborative project-based translation of bilingual Indonesian–English menu booklets as a pedagogical context where linguistic, cultural, and cognitive demands intersect. Central to this process was students’ metacognitive awareness, which regulates how they plan, monitor, negotiate, and revise translation decisions when confronting culturally embedded culinary texts. Although menu translation plays a crucial role in culinary tourism and intercultural communication, its pedagogical implementation particularly through collaborative Project-Based Learning (PjBL) frameworks foregrounding metacognitive strategy use remains underexplored in translation studies. Addressing this gap, the study adopted a qualitative case study design grounded in constructivist pedagogy and PjBL. Twenty vocational higher education students were purposively selected and divided into five collaborative groups, each assigned to translate a themed Indonesian menu (vegan, fusion food, sweets, street food, and seafood) into a bilingual booklet. Data were triangulated from student-produced menu booklets, non-participant classroom observations, and semi-structured interviews, and analyzed using thematic and document analysis. The findings reveal persistent challenges related to culture-specific culinary terms, lexical gaps, and tensions between cultural authenticity and communicative clarity. To address these challenges, students employed metacognitive strategies such as strategic planning, peer negotiation, self-monitoring, and reflective revision, alongside translation techniques including descriptive equivalence, borrowing, amplification, and literal translation. However, uneven application of these strategies exposed conflicts between domestication and foreignization, and between linguistic accuracy and audience accessibility. Despite limitations such as inconsistent terminology, unequal participation, and absence of authentic client feedback, collaborative project-based translation enhanced students’ translation competence by fostering metacognitive awareness, intercultural sensitivity, and multimodal design skills.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the criticism of patriarchal power in the novel Nyutrayu by Joko Gesang Santoso. The study uses a qualitative descriptive approach. The study uses feminist theory, specifically viewing patriarchy as a structured social system operating within the realms of the household, paid work, the state, male violence against women, sexual relations, and culture. The novel Nyutrayu is the source of the data, which consists of quotations of narratives and dialogues that represent the practice of patriarchal dominance and criticism of it. The results of the study show that the novel Nyutrayu consistently presents criticism of the patriarchal system through the depiction of imbalances of power in households, the objectification and marginalization of women in the workplace, the state's failure to provide legal protection, the normalization of physical and sexual violence, control over women's bodies and sexuality, and cultural legitimization that supports male dominance. These critiques are conveyed not only through explicit acts of violence, but also through the internal reflections of female characters who recognize the structural injustices they experience.

Abstract

This research analyzes the types and social functions of euphemistic expressions used in the reporting of sexual harassment cases on the ‘Inside Lombok’ Instagram account. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with a discourse analysis approach. Data were obtained from captions and Instagram posts related to sexual harassment cases. The research results show that there are eight types of euphemisms used, namely substitution, orthographic variation, circumlocution, generalization, technical terms, abbreviation, metaphor, and understatement. Among all these types, circumlocution is the most dominant, indicating a tendency for the media to use indirect expressions in conveying sensitive information. Additionally, this study found four main social functions of euphemisms, namely namely identity protection, censorship evasion and conformity with digital platforms, discourse neutralization and prevention of collective stigmatization, and interpretation management and public perception building. This study concludes that euphemisms in digital media reporting not only function as a strategy of linguistic politeness but also as a discursive tool that influences public representation and understanding of the issue of sexual harassment on social media.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of expressive speech acts in the film Satu Kakak Tujuh Keponakan. Expressive speech acts are utterances used by speakers to convey or demonstrate psychological states, emotions, and attitudes regarding a specific situation or event. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method. The research data consist of dialogues between characters in the film Satu Kakak Tujuh Keponakan, specifically utterances containing expressive speech acts. Data collection was carried out using the "listen-and-note" method, which involves listening to the film's dialogue and recording utterances relevant to the research focus. The collected data were analyzed by identifying, classifying, and describing the roles of expressive speech acts based on the context of the utterances. The findings are expected to reveal various functions of expressive speech acts employed by the characters such as expressing happiness, sadness, anger, disappointment, fear, gratitude, apologies, and praise, as well as other feelings or attitudes. This study is expected to contribute to the field of pragmatics particularly regarding the application of expressive speech acts in audiovisual media and serve as a reference for similar research.

Abstract

The growing use of social media has created new opportunities for English exposure outside formal classroom settings. Students can encounter English naturally through videos, captions, music, and other digital content without intentionally learning the language. This study explores the experiences of eighth-semester students in encountering passive English exposure through social media and identifies its benefits and challenges. A qualitative exploratory design was used involving eight students from the English Education Department at Universitas Islam Negeri Fatmawati Sukarno Bengkulu. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña interactive model. The findings show that passive English exposure occurred naturally through YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram during entertainment and daily activities. The exposure included audiovisual, audio, and textual input such as videos, captions, subtitles, comments, music, and memes. Repeated exposure supported incidental learning of vocabulary, slang, expressions, pronunciation, and language patterns. Social media also functioned as an informal and flexible learning space through algorithmic recommendations and personal interests. However, students faced difficulties such as unfamiliar vocabulary, fast speech, slang, and non-standard English. To overcome these challenges, they used contextual clues, visual support, translation tools, and repeated viewing. Overall, passive exposure through social media provides meaningful informal English learning experiences beyond the classroom.
