Abstract

Introduction: Communication is one of the basic competence of a medical doctor. Community-based education as one of the educational methode in medical curriculum has a role to achieve communication competence and the other medical doctor competencies. Fieldlab is a learning program that using community-based education methode. The purpose of this study is to know how the role of fieldlab on achieving medical doctor competencies at communication aspect.   Methods: This study was a qualitative study with a purposive sampling method. The sample was medical students of faculty of medicine, Sebelas Maret University batch 2012 that has pass all topics of fieldlab. The metode of collecting data was using 4 group of focus group discussion (FGD) with 6 to 8 subject in each group. This study analyzed with content analysis technique. Results: This study found some fieldlab roles in achieving medical doctor competencies in communication aspect. Such as train the ability to communicate to the community, inter-profession communication, and communication with patients. Otherwise, it  found that there were things could hinder the communication competencies achievement. Conclusions: Fieldlab has role to increasing the doctor competence in communication aspect of medical student. Keywords: fieldlab, community-based education, communication, competency

Abstract

Background: The high rate of remediation at Community Medicine Block still occur in Medical School Universitas Sebelas Maret, which has the vision and mission of producing graduates who are community oriented. On the block, the learning activities in the form of tutorial discussions, lectures support, skills lab, and field lab. Tutorial discussions can be considered as a core in the model of Problem Based Learning (PBL). In the tutorial discussions, students will look for their own learning goals, known as the Achieved Learning Outcome (ALO), while the faculty to design Faculty Learning Objective (FLO) is expected to achieve student. This study aims to determine the description of the achievement of community medical competence with the analysis FLO and ALO congruence in tutorial process. Methods: This research is descriptive qualitative research. This research was conducted at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sebelas Maret Surakarta in September-November 2016. This study used a total sampling on report tutorial of the 2nd scenario of Community Medicine, as many as 20 reports. Data were collected through Examining records (checking of documents). Data analysis was performed through discourse analysis. Result: Researchers obtained 15 statements tutorial, with 11 reports softfile and 4 reports hardfile. The congruence of FLO and ALO varied on each FLO. Two FLO achieved 100% by a group tutorial, whereas in other FLO, there is group with ALO only partially met by FLO. There is 1 FLO majority is not reached. ALO about family physicians appear on the 12 of report which actually not listed in FLO. Conclusion: The achievement of FLO varies in each FLO, with also found ALO incongruent with FLO in the majority of the group tutorials. Further research on the factors that influence the achievement of FLO and other aspects of learning in the block needs to be done to determine competency achievement. Evaluation should always be done either on the side of the scenario, tutors, and students for achievement of learning objectives tutorial. Keywords: ALO, FLO, congruence, tutorial, competency

Abstract

Background: Learning environment is everything that happened in the class, departement, faculty or university that plays a very important role in effective student learning. Students perception of the learning environment is also found to influence their behaviour. Student participation in problem-based learning (PBL) curricula leads to use of Self Directed Learning (SDL) skills. SDL, which is a prerequisite for life-long learning can flourishin certain learning environments. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between students perception of learning environment and self directed learning readiness in the Faculty of Medicine Sebelas Maret Universtity. Method: This study was an observational analytic study with cross sectional method approach among 106 medical students of Sebelas Maret University that selected by Systematic Random Sampling method. This research used DREEM (Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure) that measured the students perception of learning environment and SDLRS that measured students self directed learning readiness. Data analysis used Pearson correlation (? = 0.05). Result: Pearson correlation test results a significant correlation between Students Perception of Learning Environment with Self Directed Learning Readiness in The Faculty of Medicine Sebelas Maret University with p <0.05 (p = 0.000). The test results also showed a moderate correlation between two variables with a correlation coefficient (r) 0.551, with increased students perception of learning environment will increase self directed learning readiness in the Faculty of Medicine Sebelas Maret University. Conclusion: There is a moderate relationship between Students Perception of Learning Environment and Self Directed Learning Readiness in The Faculty of Medicine Sebelas Maret University. Abstract

Introduction: An educational institution can be said to be have a certain quality if it is able to provide an effective learning environment so that produce graduates competent doctor. Students' perceptions of the learning environment is influenced by many factors, including the type of personality. A student personality type will determine the variation patterns of behavior learning. This research aimed to determine differences in perceptions of the learning environment between the two types of personality. Methods: This research was an observational analytic with cross-sectional approach. Selection of research sample was begun with a preliminary study using Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI) questionnaire for some Medical students of UNS to know the proportion of students with introvert personality type and students with extrovert personality type. The result was 2 : 3. Population of the research was Medical Students of UNS. The sampling technique was proportional stratified random sampling. There were 276 students obtained as samples. Samples weregiven a Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM) questionnaire. The data obtained were analyzed with the Mann-Whitney test. Results: The results showed a significant difference between the perceptions of the learning environment of introvert and extroverts students (p = 0.001). Significant differences contained in the Students Perception of Learning subscale (SPL, p = 0.004), Students Academic Self-Perceptions subscale (SASP, p = 0.000), Students Perception of Atmosphere subscale (SPA, p = 0.003), and the Students Social Self Perception subscale (SSSP, p = 0.001). While, on the Students Perception of Teacher subscale was not found significant difference (SPT, p = 0.381). Conclusions: There was difference of learning environment perception between introvert and extrovert student of personality types. Abstract

Background: High school students at final year commonly experience anxiety when preparing the National Examination. Many students will eventually take more intensive additional courses offered by other institutions outside their schools as part of efforts to anticipate disappointing results of the examination. This study aimed to seek the rela-tionship between attendance for intensive external course with anxiety degree among final year students of SMA Negeri 8 Solo preparing the 2012 National Examination. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in March 2012 at SMA N 8 Solo. The 12th grade students were purposively sampled based on certain criteria. Subjects were asked to give informed consent and to complete a biodata form and T-MAS questionnaire which were administered 15 minutes before the classes dismissed. Data were analyzed using t-independent test. Results: This study showed that the anxiety scores of students taking and not taking external course differed significantly (t = -33,4; p<0,001). Students not attending an intensive external course were more anxious than their counterparts. Conclusions: Attendance for an intensive external course was related to anxiety among the 12th grade students of SMA N 8 Solo preparing the National Examination. Abstract

Introduction: Higher life satisfaction in medical students produce health services were better in the future. One of the determining factors in life satisfaction is a personality traits. Extrovert and introvert personality can be used as consideration in choosing a policy approach to the education system in favor of life satisfaction. Also, stress in the medical education is very common. The high stress causes a decrease in academic performance and life satisfaction. The level of life satisfaction is one indicator of success in an educational institution. This study aimed to determine the effect of personality type and stress to the level of life satisfaction FK UNS Physician Education students. Methods: This research was using descriptive analytic cross-sectional approach. The study was conducted at the Faculty of Medicine UNS. Respondents were students FK UNS from 2013 to 2015. A sample of 260 students selected using stratified random sampling based on year entrance and selected according to the student identification numbers. Measuring instruments were Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI) and the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS). Students were gathered in a room then got explanation and welcomed to fill out the questionnaire independently. Furthermore, the data was performed normality test and then analyzed by Pearson correlation test, followed by multiple linear regression analysis (? = 0,05). Results: Pearson correlation test results (0.139) show there is a very weak positive correlation between extrovert personality traits with a level of life satisfaction (p = 0.025). While there is a strong (-0.656) negative relationship between stress and the life satisfaction (p < 0.00). There is no multicollinearity relationship between these variables. Abstract

Background: Stress is a condition when people feels threatened or pressured, either physically or mentally. Stress is affected by many factors. Students who are working on the thesis are highly susceptible to stress. Stress can cause a variety of effects can disrupt the learning process, so it can affect academic achievement. This study aims to determine the influence of stress level in students doing thesis to academic achievement among medical student of Sebelas Maret University. Methods: This research was an observational analytic study with cross sectional study approach. The subjects were medical students of Sebelas Maret University who are doing thesis with 140 samples. Stress level was measured by questionnaire, whereas academic achievement was measured by Grade Point Average on study results. Data was analyzed using Kendalls Tau correlation test. Results: The result for correlation test were correlation value (r) -0.069 and p = 0.123 (p > 0.05). It means there was no significant relationship between the stress level and Grade Point Average. Conclusions: There is no significant effect of stress level in students doing thesis to academic achievement among medical student of Sebelas Maret University. Abstract

Introduction: Clinical skills competence is one of areas of competence to be achieved by graduate of medical education institutions. As an effort to achieve clinical skills competency for the students, Medical Faculty of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) establishs Skills Lab. In learning clinical skills, there are various components that can support learning. Therefore this study aimed to explore students perceptions of the supporting learning factors in the Skills Lab. Methods: This study was a qualitative research which conducted in Medical Faculty of Universitas Sebelas Maret on October-November 2016. The study participants were the second year, third year, and fourth year students of Medical Faculty of Sebelas Maret University. The method of collecting data was by focus group discussion (FGD) and in-depth interview. The data was analyzed by content anaylis. Data validation using triangulation method, peer debriefing, and member checking. Result: There are various factors influencing on learning in Skills Lab. Several factors were found in this study was instructor, curriculum, students, modules, infrastructure, and system in Skills Lab. According to student, an instructor must have a good character, good communication and interpersonal skills, competence in science, and have the appropriate skills and methods in teaching. In supporting learning, Skills Lab and blocks curriculum should be integrated and aligned. In addition, curriculum also has to be up to date with the development of the medical world. Students themselves have an influence in creating an effective learning. Students ideally should have motivation, adequate prior knowledge, and the attitudes and behavior in both the teaching and learning activities. Modules as well as infrastructure in the Skills Lab also act as a support when such facilities are available and adequate. System in Skills Lab is equally important. Various supporting activities such as monitoring-evaluation activities, and training of instructors need to be improved. Conclusion: In the perspective of a student, there are various factors that influence learning, including the instructors, curriculum, students, modules, infrastructure, and system in the Skills Lab. Abstract

Background: The assistance lecture program was a part of practicum activity, a part of medical educations curriculum that led to achieve Indonesians doctor competence. All this time, the assistance lecture program was held outside the regular lecture schedule, usually in the morning. Some party felt that morning assistance lecture was a burden for them. Then a policy was made to put morning assistance lecture into regular college schedule, especially at the afternoon. The other party felt that afternoon assistance was ineffective because student already had a full schedule from morning till afternoon. Student may feel tired when accepting the afternoon assistance lecture program. This research aimed to compare the effectiveness between morning assistance lecture and afternoon assistance lecture. Methods: This research was a quasi-experimental research with pretest and posttest group design study approach. This research was making an intervention to samples without samples randomization. The intervention that made is researcher performing both morning and afternoon assistance lecture program to samples. Samples of this research were medical students of Sebelas Maret University Faculty of Medicine class of 2012. Samples were taken by rule of thumb method and then samples divided by morning group and afternoon group. The number of samples was 30 persons from each group and all of them undergo pretest and posttest that contain pharmacology subject lesson. Then the result of samples pretest and posttest points compared and analyzed with unpaired T-test method. Results: Morning assistance lecture group had a mean value 0.43, bigger than afternoon assistance lecture group that only had mean value 0.40. Those were shown from the T test results with p=0.103 (p>0.05) which means there were no significant difference of pharmacology points between morning assistance lecture group and afternoon assistance lecture group. Conclusion: Based on independent T test analysis, there are no significant difference of pharmacology points between morning assistance lecture group and afternoon assistance lecture group. Abstract

Introduction: Laboratory activity is one of the learning process in that aims to help students to achievethe learning objectives of a Block. The combined laboratory activity of Histology-Anatomical Pathology had been conducted on 2014. This combined laboratory activity was affectedthe outcome of learning process, in this case wasthe test result. The studyaims to compare Anatomical Pathology test result on combined and separate laboratory activity of Histology-Anatomical Pathology. Methods: The research was a cross-sectional observational analytical. It had been done at Faculty of Medicine Sebelas Maret University on November, 2015. Subjects of this research weresecond and third year students. The data was collected by stratified random sampling. The Anatomical Pathology test result that will be compared is the Anatomical Pathology test result on Musculoskeletal Block. The data was analyzed byMann-Whitney test. Results: The result of Mann-Whitney test showed the value of p= 0.237 (p > 0.05) means insignificant statistically between Anatomical Pathology test result on combined and separate laboratory activity of Histology-Anatomical Pathology. Conclusions: There was no difference of Anatomical Pathology test result on combined and separate laboratory activity of Histology-Anatomical Pathology in Faculty of Medicine Sebelas Maret University.
