Abstract

The concept of Neo-Sufism has been widely discussed in Islamic studies as an attempt to reconcile Sufi spirituality with Islamic orthodoxy and socio-moral engagement. This article examines the characteristics of Neo-Sufism in Shaikh al-Nawawi al-Bantani’s Tanqīḥ al-Qawl. Employing qualitative library research with a descriptive-analytical method, the study analyzes selected themes in the text, including remembrance (dhikr), repentance (tawbah), poverty (faqr), and silence (ṣamt), using Fazlur Rahman’s concept of Neo-Sufism as an analytical framework. The findings reveal that al-Nawawi integrates spiritual purification with adherence to the Qur’an and Hadith while emphasizing ethical discipline and moral responsibility. His interpretation of Sufi teachings reflects an effort to harmonize inner spirituality with orthodox religious commitments. This study contributes to the scholarship on Southeast Asian Islam by demonstrating how a prominent Jawi scholar reformulated classical Sufi teachings within a scriptural and socio-moral framework characteristic of Neo-Sufism

Abstract

Contemporary spiritual, social, and ecological crises highlight the need for a theological framework that helps individuals navigate uncertainty. This study examines the narratives of Prophet Abraham’s sacrifice and Prophet Noah’s Ark through the concept of unknown navigation, defined as a theological condition in which believers act upon divine guidance despite limited knowledge of its outcomes and wisdom. Unlike previous studies that treat these narratives separately as accounts of obedience and salvation, this article proposes unknown navigation as a theological lens for understanding prophetic responses to existential uncertainty. This qualitative study employs thematic Qur’anic exegesis (tafsīr mawḍū‘ī) and historical-textual analysis of Qur’anic passages concerning Abraham and Noah. The analysis focuses on obedience, trials of faith, divine guidance, and spiritual salvation. The findings reveal a common theological pattern: obedience to revelation precedes certainty about outcomes. Abraham accepted the command to sacrifice his son without knowing its resolution, while Noah built the Ark without knowing when or how salvation would occur. These narratives demonstrate that unknown navigation represents a spiritual model grounded in faith, surrender, and trust in Allah. The study contributes to contemporary Islamic theology by offering a conceptual framework for understanding divine guidance and human agency amid modern crises of identity, morality, and spirituality.

Abstract

Current perspectives on Sufism also take into account its social and ethical aspects, but existing studies about it are still mainly restricted to analysis of neo-Sufism, social Sufism, or practical mysticism of individuals without developing any conceptual model for “positive Sufism.” This current study is an attempt to develop the concept of positive Sufism as a modern ethical-spiritual paradigm as well as discuss its applicability to social ethics in the contemporary Muslim community. In this research project, a qualitative library research method was used through an exploratory and analytic approach. Information was gathered from books, journals, and other academic sources related to Sufism, Islamic ethics, and Islamic thought. It is concluded that positive Sufism is a contextual reinterpretation of Sufi spirituality involving spiritual awareness, moral reform, rational reflection, and social commitment. Contrary to conventional views of Sufism as being otherworldly and inactive in social matters, positive Sufism makes the world itself a site for the realization of divine qualities through justice, mercy, accountability, tolerance, and social activity. Indeed, from the theoretical perspective, positive Sufism makes a contribution by mediating the dichotomy between spirituality and social ethics in modern Islamic thought. In this way, positive Sufism is not only an individual religious practice but also an ethical-spiritual tradition that can address the issues of modernity in the Muslim world such as materialism and individualism.

Abstract

This study investigates the intellectual authority and contributions of Shaykh Muhammad Yasin al-Fadani to global hadith scholarship, widely known as Musnid al-Dunyā for his extensive sanad networks in the modern period. It addresses the marginalization of Southeast Asian ulama in dominant narratives of Islamic intellectual history, which emphasize Middle Eastern centers while underrepresenting Nusantara contributions. Using a historical-qualitative approach, this research analyzes primary sources, including al-Fadani’s sanad compilations, ijāzah documents, and scholarly writings, supported by literature on Islamic intellectual networks and hadith transmission. The analysis is framed within transregional epistemic networks and sanad-based authority as a living tradition of knowledge production. The findings show that al-Fadani played a pivotal role in connecting Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern scholarly worlds through teaching, documentation, and systematic transmission of hadith knowledge. His authority was grounded not only in the accumulation of sanad chains but also in his ability to institutionalize transmission practices within modern scholarly contexts. This reflects epistemic agency in which Southeast Asian scholarship actively shapes global Islamic intellectual traditions rather than merely receiving them. Furthermore, al-Fadani transformed classical sanad traditions into a structured epistemological framework compatible with modern Islamic educational systems without severing their traditional foundations. His legacy reconfigures understandings of authority, transmission, and scholarly legitimacy in contemporary hadith studies. Overall, this study re-evaluates Southeast Asian intellectual presence in global Islamic scholarship by positioning al-Fadani as a key figure in preserving, systematizing, and expanding sanad-based knowledge networks.

Abstract

This study examines the construction of contextual Qur’anic interpretation in Tafsir al-Iklīl fī Ma‘ānī al-Tanzīl by Misbah Musthofa, focusing on the relationship between the Qur’anic text and the socio-religious realities of Indonesian Muslim society. The study is motivated by the dominance of textual exegetical approaches that insufficiently address contemporary social complexity. The aim is to analyze patterns of contextualization in interpreting Qur’anic verses related to family planning, usury-based banking, Qur’anic recitation competitions (MTQ), and the tahlilan tradition. This research employs a qualitative library-based method with a hermeneutic-contextual approach, socio-historical analysis, and Critical Discourse Analysis. Data are examined through textual identification, contextual mapping, and discursive interpretation. The findings reveal that Misbah Musthofa constructs a dialectical relationship between Qur’anic norms and social reality through ethical emphases such as sincerity, moral responsibility, and social critique. The study concludes that Tafsir al-Iklīl represents a contextual exegetical model contributing to the development of Nusantara Qur’anic hermeneutics.

Abstract

Songkok nasional is a typical Indonesian attribute that contains various cultural, religious, and even state symbols. Meanwhile, there is a hadith that talks about the symbol of human identity, namely the hadith ‘imāmah. Therefore, this article wants to explore the relationship between symbolic meanings built in the songkok nasional and the hadith of ‘imāmah using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic theory. The research method is a qualitative method based on library research. The analysis technique used is descriptive analytical, namely analyzing the data that has been collected and then describing the research results comprehensively. The results of this study are through three semiotic relations, Songkok Nasional understood as a representation of national identity, which has normative legitimacy through its correlation with the hadith ‘imāmah as the basis for dressing in Islam. This relationship shows that the symbols of clothing, especially head coverings, are not singular, but have layered, contextual, and flexible meanings.

Abstract

This study examines how the Ahmadiyah Qadiani minority in Indonesia has sought to preserve its existence and ensure cadre regeneration amid persistent discrimination, persecution, and social exclusion during the post-Reform era. Using a qualitative approach based on observations, documentation, and semi-structured interviews, the research focuses on the Arif Rahman Hakim (ARH) Islamic Boarding School in Tangerang as a case study. The findings reveal that the school functions as a strategic institution for transmitting Ahmadiyah beliefs and values through a dual curriculum consisting of general Islamic studies and specialized Ahmadiyah teachings. This educational model aims to strengthen the intellectual, emotional, and ideological development of Ahmadiyah youth while fostering a strong collective identity within the community. Although ARH is not directly administered by the Ahmadiyah Nizam, it serves as an important center for preparing future generations of Ahmadiyah members. The study also notes that the institution operates in a sensitive legal and religious context, as the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has declared Ahmadiyah Qadiani a deviant sect in its 1980 and 2005 fatwas. Therefore, the research concludes that government policies toward Ahmadiyah educational institutions should prioritize prudence, fairness, and the prevention of violence while safeguarding social harmony and the rule of law.

Abstract

This study examines the semantic correlation between Q. 1:7 and Q. 2:1-2 using a thematic exegesis (tafsir maudhu'i) approach enriched with semantic-hermeneutic analysis. It aims to reveal the profound conceptual and structural relationship between the supplication for guidance (aṣ-ṣirāṭ al-mustaqīm) in Surah Al-Fatihah and the affirmation of the Qur'an as guidance (hudan lil-muttaqīn) in Surah Al-Baqarah. The applied research method integrates linguistic analysis of key terms, a study of munasabah (inter-verse correlation), and a comparison of classical and contemporary exegeses, incorporating Toshihiko Izutsu's semantic theory and Fazlur Rahman's philosophical hermeneutics. The findings reveal that the two verses form a dialectical relation characterized as a divine question and answer (su'al wa jawāb).. Surah Al-Fatihah functions as a universal preamble (muqaddimah kuliyyah) formulating the fundamental principles of Islamic teachings, while Q. 2:1-2 acts as its operational elaboration (tafsīl 'amali). This relationship reflects a transcendental communication between the servant and the Creator, manifested through three interconnected layers of meaning: the theological layer (encompassing monotheism and its implementation), the anthropological layer (explaining the balance of the human role as servant and vicegerent), and the epistemological layer (integrating revelation as guidance with God-consciousness as its prerequisite). The implications of these findings are multidimensional, encompassing cognitive transformation (forming a holistic understanding of the Qur'an as a unified system), behavioral transformation (fostering a proactive attitude from seeking to implementing divine guidance), and communal transformation (building a society grounded in the spirituality of Al-Fatihah, actualized within a social order based on Qur'anic guidance) for its readers.

Abstract

The ecological crisis, characterized by deforestation, environmental pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate change, has become a serious challenge to the sustainability of human life, including in Indonesia. Although Islamic ecotheological studies have developed considerably, most existing research has focused on Qur'anic perspectives, while the ecotheological dimensions embedded in the Prophetic traditions (hadith) have received relatively limited systematic attention and contextualization in relation to contemporary environmental issues. This study aims to examine the ecological values contained in the hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad and their relevance to addressing Indonesia's environmental crisis. Employing a qualitative approach based on library research, the study draws upon classical hadith collections and relevant secondary sources. The data are analyzed using thematic analysis within the framework of Islamic ecotheology. Particular attention is given to hadiths concerning land management, tree planting, animal welfare, environmental conservation, and the responsible use of natural resources. The findings reveal that the Prophetic traditions embody a comprehensive ecological ethic that positions humans as khalīfah entrusted with maintaining the balance and sustainability of ecosystems. This study offers a hadith-based ecotheological perspective that broadens the discourse of Islamic ecotheology, which has thus far been predominantly centered on the Qur'an. The findings not only enrich contemporary hadith studies but also provide an ethical foundation for strengthening environmental education and fostering ecological awareness among Muslim communities in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines the reconstruction of women’s independence in Qur’anic interpretation through a hermeneutic analysis of Karīmān Ḥamzah’s Tafsīr al-Lu’lu’ wa al-Marjān fī Tafsīr al-Qur’ān al-Karīm. Departing from dominant readings that often position woman within normative and domestic frameworks, this article argues that women’s independence can be rearticulated as an integral part of Qur’anic ethical vision. Employing a thematic-hermeneutic approach, this research analyzes selected Qur’anic verses related to intellectual, economic, social, moral, and spiritual dimensions of women’s lives, while situating Karīmān Ḥamzah’s interpretations within contemporary debates on Qur’anic hermeneutics and interpretive authority. The findings demonstrate that although Karīmān Ḥamzah does not explicitly formulate a systematic theory of women’s independence, her interpretive framework implicitly constructs woman as active moral subjects who participate in knowledge production, economic activity, social engagement, and ethical decision-making. Her approach reflects a form of “popular hermeneutics” that mediates between classical exegetical authorities and the lived realities of modern Muslim societies, thereby expanding the scope of interpretive authority beyond traditional scholarly institutions. At the same time, this study identifies certain tensions in her interpretations, where elements of traditional gender norms remain present, revealing the complex negotiation between continuity and change in contemporary Qur’anic exegesis. This article contributes to the study of Qur’anic hermeneutics by demonstrating that women’s independence is not merely a modern construct, but can be grounded in the Qur’an through context-sensitive interpretation. It also highlights the role of female exegetes in reshaping the production of religious knowledge and offers a nuanced framework for understanding women’s position within Islamic thought in the contemporary era..
