Abstract

This study explores the interrelation between contemporary Islamic da’wah and Gadamerian hermeneutics through Amina Wadud’s interpretation of Q.S. An-Nisā’ [4]:1, emphasizing the reconstruction of gender understanding in Islamic discourse. Contemporary da’wah is not merely a call to faith but a transformative engagement with social realities, while hermeneutics as articulated by Hans-Georg Gadamer provides a dialogical framework for interpreting sacred texts within historical and cultural horizons. Using a qualitative-descriptive and hermeneutical approach, this research analyzes how Wadud’s interpretive method embodies Gadamer’s concept of the “fusion of horizons” (Horizontverschmelzung), bridging classical Qur’anic exegesis with contemporary gender ethics. The findings reveal that Wadud’s reading reconstructs Q.S. An-Nisā’ [4]:1 as a text affirming the ontological equality of men and women, challenging patriarchal interpretations rooted in pre-modern exegetical traditions. Her interpretation serves as a form of contemporary da’wah a communicative and emancipatory discourse that integrates spirituality, justice, and gender inclusivity. The study concludes that combining Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics with Wadud’s feminist Qur’anic reading offers a viable model for renewing Islamic da’wah in the modern era, promoting human dignity and ethical pluralism in the interpretation of divine revelation

Abstract

Thisarticle aims to examine the concept of love-based education in the Qur'an through an eco-theological interpretation of educational verses. In this study, theconcept of "love" is specifically understood as raḥmah (universal compassion), which serves as the ontological foundation of creation and revelation, rather than merely ḥubb (specific, preferential love). The research employs a thematic exegesis (tafsīr mawdhū‘ī) approach, analyzingkey verses related to education, raḥmah, and the human-naturerelationshipthrough thelensesof eco-theology and contemporary Islamic education. The findings reveal that Qur'anic education is deeply rooted in raḥmah as the ontological and ethical foundation for the relationship between God, humanity, and nature. The concept of human vicegerency (khalīfah fī al-arḍ) is understood as a moral and educational mandate to preserve ecological balance, rather than as a justificationfor environmental exploitation. Based on these findings, this article formulates a Raḥmah-Based Education Frameworkfrom the perspectiveof Qur'aniceco-theology,encompassing theological, pedagogical, and ecological dimensions. This study affirms that an Islamic education paradigm oriented towards love (raḥmah) and ecological consciousness has the potential toserve asan alternativeframework for addressingthe global environmental crisis and for shaping learners who are faithful, virtuous, and responsiblestewards of life’s sustainability.

Abstract

This study examines the reconstruction of the marriage agreement concept within Islamic family law by integrating classical–contemporary fiqh perspectives, the framework of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, and Indonesian positive law. Although marriage agreements have been widely discussed, previous studies tend to be fragmented and rarely combine these three analytical dimensions. Using a normative legal research method supported by conceptual, historical, and statutory approaches, this research finds that marriage agreements possess strong legitimacy within the Islamic legal tradition, grounded in the principles of al-maslahah, contractual stipulations (al-syurūṭ fī al-‘uqūd), and the inherent flexibility of mu‘āmalah. The maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah approach reveals that marriage agreements significantly contribute to the preservation of the five essential objectives of Islamic law: ḥifẓ al-māl, ḥifẓ al-nasl, ḥifẓ al-nafs, ḥifẓ al-‘aql, and ḥifẓ al-dīn. In the context of Indonesian positive law, Constitutional Court Decision No. 69/PUU-XIII/2015 expands the legal framework by allowing marriage agreements to be made after the marriage ceremony, reflecting a more progressive and responsive legal paradigm. This study concludes that an integrative reconstruction of marriage agreements can enhance stability, justice, and protection within Muslim families in Indonesia, and offers a substantial contribution to the development of family law reforms aligned with contemporary social dynamics

Abstract

This article examines the political wisdom and contributions of K.H. A. Wachid Hasjim in the formulation of Indonesia’s state foundation and constitution during the BPUPK and PPKI sessions. Drawing on a qualitative, historical–descriptive approach using documentary research, this study analyzes primary sources—including the BPUPK and PPKI deliberations, writings of Wachid Hasjim, and constitutional documents—as well as secondary scholarly works. The findings show that despite being a strong advocate for Islam as the basis of the state, K.H. A. Wachid Hasyim demonstrated remarkable magnanimity by accepting the removal of the Jakarta Charter and several Islamic formulations in the 1945 Constitution for the sake of national unity. This study argues that Hasjim's thought represents a 'symbiotic paradigm' rooted not merely in political compromise but in a substantive understanding of Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) that prioritizes public good (maslahah). His approach reflects a broader principle that Pancasila, as a compromise-oriented and accommodating state ideology, provides a framework that guarantees religious freedom while maintaining national cohesion. The study highlights the relevance of his political wisdom in contemporary Indonesia, where political and religious elites often succumb to pragmatism, egoism, and intolerance, contributing to social and religious conflicts. Emulating K.H. A. Wachid Hasyim’s inclusive and tolerant leadership can serve as a model for fostering national unity and harmonious religious coexistence in Indonesia’s pluralistic society.

Abstract

This article examines the reinterpretation of Qur’anic inheritance norms through the lens of relational justice by engaging with the basuluh tradition practiced by the Banjar community in Indragiri Hilir, Indonesia. While classical interpretations of QS. An-Nisā’ (4):11–12 have predominantly emphasized fixed inheritance ratios, such readings often overlook the ethical objectives (maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah) and relational dimensions embedded within the Qur’anic discourse on family and justice. Drawing on a qualitative case study approach that integrates maqāṣid-based hermeneutics, reciprocal (mubādalah) interpretation, and secondary ethnographic data, this study explores how local deliberative practices function as a living interpretation of the Qur’an. The findings demonstrate that basuluh operates not as a deviation from Qur’anic norms but as a contextual mechanism for realizing justice through mutual consent, responsibility, and family harmony. By foregrounding principles such as ghayra muḍārrin (non-harm), bil-ma‘rūf (recognized fairness), and reciprocal moral responsibility among heirs, the Banjar practice reflects a relational understanding of justice that aligns with the Qur’an’s ethical vision. This study contributes theoretically by advancing a maqāṣidī–reciprocal framework for Qur’anic interpretation, challenging rigid legal formalism while preserving normative integrity. Practically, it offers an alternative model for contextualizing Islamic inheritance law in plural socio-cultural settings without undermining Qur’anic authority

Abstract

This study examines how Abdullah ibn Abbas and other Companions contributed to the core principles of Qur'anic interpretation, focusing on their methods, characteristics, and relevance for today's challenges. Using a historical and qualitative approach, the research finds that the Companions' tafsir was a dynamic process that combined divine authority with contextual understanding and independent reasoning. Ibn Abbas relied on sources such as the Qur'an and Hadith with a focus on language and literature, while others, such as Ibn Mas'ud, took a more textual approach, and Ali ibn Abi Talib emphasised rational and ethical perspectives. The study also reviews criticisms about the chain of narration in the book Tanwīr al-Miqbās attributed to Ibn Abbas. In conclusion, the Companions' exegesis remains an important foundation but needs to be integrated with modern hermeneutical, thematic, and socio-cultural methods to address current issues. This approach turns the historical legacy into a dynamic source of inspiration for a more reflective and inclusive Islamic hermeneutics

Abstract

positivism, Islamic epistemology, pedagogical assessment, and teacher performance within Indonesia's contemporary educational landscape. Drawing on a thorough philosophical analysis of positivism—from its foundational principles established by Auguste Comte to its modern interpretations and critiques—this study integrates these perspectives with the rich intellectual tradition of Islamic epistemology. By synthesizing these frameworks alongside empirical evidence from Indonesia, the paper offers a more comprehensive and contextually authentic understanding. It examines how positivist approaches have influenced pedagogical assessment methodologies while also considering how Islamic principles, embedded within the national philosophy of Pancasila and local values, provide a critical alternative and complement. Furthermore, the study assesses the implications of these intertwined approaches for fostering Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) as redefined within an Islamic framework. Through a synthesis of theoretical frameworks and empirical findings, this paper aims to provide insights into optimizing teacher performance assessment to promote a more holistic, effective, and values-based educational system in Indonesia. Visual elements—including a diagram illustrating the conceptual framework, an image depicting an Indonesian classroom, and a comparative table of paradigms—are incorporated to enhance understanding and offer a multifaceted perspective

Abstract

The activity of reading the Quran is an essential lesson that every Muslim must understand, as it serves as a guide in life and holds significant value in worship. However, the process of learning to read the Quran is often neglected today due to technological advancements and the preference for Latin script readings, which are considered less important. This study aims to present a media development product for learning the makharijul letters of the Quran using the Tahsin Digital Augmented Reality Android application platform. The research follows the Research and Development (R&D) methodology based on the Borg and Gall model. After several stages of development, the study found that the media created for learning makharijul letters through this Augmented Reality digital Tahsin application is accessible on the Google Play Store for Android devices. According to feedback from experts in Tahsin and technology, the application is highly valid and effective in supporting the learning of makharijul letters. This is due to the unique delivery of each letter through Augmented Reality technology, complemented by animations and audio samples provided by scientifically verified experts. The Tahsin Digital Augmented Reality application is suitable for users ranging from basic education to higher education levels.

Abstract

This article examines Mahmud Shaltut’s interpretation of socio-legal Qur’anic verses through a maqasid al-shari‘ah–based approach, focusing on its methodologicalframeworkand implications for contemporary Islamic legal thought. Employing qualitative library research with a descriptive-analytical design, the study analyzes Shaltut’s exegetical works—particularly Tafsiral-Qur’anal-Kari and Al-Islam‘Aqidah waSyari‘ah—usingqualitative content analysis. The findings reveal that Shaltut positions maqasid al-shari‘ah not merely as a complementaryprinciplebut as a central hermeneutical framework guiding socio-legal interpretation. Through a thematic analysis of three key issues—women’s leadership (Q.S. An-Nisa’: 34), interreligious relations and peace (Q.S. Al-Baqarah: 256; Al-Anfal: 61), and economic justice (Q.S. Al-Baqarah: 275–280)—this study demonstrates that Shaltut consistently applies a tripartite model of ijtihad that integrates textual analysis, socio-historical context, and the higher objectives of Islamic law. His interpretive approach prioritizes the spirit of the law (ruh al-tashri‘), substantive justice, and public welfare (maslahah), allowing for contextual legal reconstruction without undermining the authority of the Qur’anic text. This study concludes that Shaltut’s maqasid-based tafsir represents a contextual-progressive exegetical modelthat significantlycontributes to the development of contemporary socio-legal hermeneutics and offers a viable methodological foundation for addressing issues of gender justice, peaceful interreligious coexistence, and equitable economicsystems.
