Abstract

This research highlights the importance of the Arabic lexicon in teaching and studying ta’bîr courses in Ma’had al-Imarat Bandung. This qualitative research depends on a field study and a descriptive analysis. This importance is due to three aspects: The first is the ta’bîr courses of materials prescribed in any Arabic language learning institutes to develop students’ four skills. The second is that lexicons are tools for teaching and learning the Arabic language, especially in the subject matter of ta’bîr. The third is that the Arabic lexicon is one of the primary sources people refer to correct their linguistic knowledge. The results indicate that language acquisition is the most important of that knowledge. Furthermore, in acquiring the Arabic language, many factors are linguistic and non-linguistic. Dictionaries are considered one of the primary tools in language acquisition in studying the subject matter of ta’bîr.

Abstract

This study investigates discourse markers (DMs) development and diversity in accordance with the Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) approach employed in online news articles. 867 football news articles were downloaded from Al-Jazeera.net to analyse the use of discourse markers (DMs) based on previous studies along with Modern Standard Arabic grammar books as well as the theories of Fraser (2005) and Al-Khawaldeh (2014). Both data coding and analysis were completed manually. The results showed that in linking textual fragments, discourse markers under the Additive category are the most frequently used within all the articles. In fact, the study also found that DM wa was most frequently used in articles compared to other discourse markers. For each category, the researcher discovered a set of new discourse markers that were not considered in previous works. The manual coding process has also led to the discovery of a new category – Affirmative, with a comprehensive list of discourse markers. It is hoped that this study can function as an important reference for researchers who are interested to delve deeper into the area.

Abstract

This study aimed at investigating students’ beliefs about Arabic language learning across cultural background differences. The study used a questionnaire of Horwitz’s Beliefs about Language Learning (BALLI). The data were analysed by frequency, arithmetic means and independent sample test. The results indicated that the dimensions of Dayakese students’ beliefs including aptitude, difficulty, and nature of language learning, learning strategies were at a medium level, the dimension of motivation was high, while the dimension of Banjarese including difficulty, nature of language learning, learning strategies and motivation were medium, aptitude was high. Overall, beliefs about Arabic language learning of Dayakese and Banjarese students were medium.  From independent sample test, it was known that the p-value =0.174. This means that there was not a significant difference between Dayakese and Banjarese students. This indicated that the differences among people whose cultures are closed to each other demographically in their beliefs about Arabic language learning were not found.

Abstract

In linguistic studies, there was a tremendous blow, the context in which previously did not get attention in linguistic research as it is beyond language discussion, at this time became a topic of lively discussion. Especially with the presence of London School led by Firth, he stated that the environment has a significant influence on the language. The context of the language is very helpful to understand the text and decoding. Therefore, understanding the context of non-linguistic features is indispensable. The more so in translation, because the basis of a translation is the transfer of meaning from the source language to the target language, using the appropriate context will produce a good translation. The researcher analyzed the poems in the second part of the Tata Bahasa Arab book, 53 in total. The research is a descriptive analysis in which the researcher collected data on the context and its use in translation.DOI : 10.15408/a.v3i1.2143

Abstract

Modern Arabic Dialects (MADs) have an identical morphological system with some similarities and differences in the choice of the negation morphemes. The main concern of this paper is to discuss the typological properties of the negation morpheme mâ- ما and its variation in four Modern Arabic Dialects (MADs), JA (Jordanian Arabic), KA (Kuwaiti Arabic), SA (Sudanese Arabic), and YA (Yemeni Arabic) taking into account two negation strategies identified by Brustad (2000), namely Verbal Negation and Predicate Negation. Specifically, the study will shed light on the types and positions of the negation morphemes regarding VN and PN strategies. The study employed a descriptive-analytical approach. The data were taken from previous studies on negation in MADs and online sources, i.e., published articles and YouTube. The study found that when the negation morpheme mâ - ما is used as a one-negation system or a two-negation system, as a verbal and predicate negation, it changes to the negation morpheme mâ- ما due to phonological conditions and its pre-verbal position. The study concluded that three negation templates might be generalized in the four dialects, namely one-morpheme template, two-morpheme-template, and predicate negation template. Moreover, blocking of the negation morpheme movement in the sentences happens to do to phonological conditions.
