Abstract

The moral crisis that often occurs in school-age children is the reason for the importance of strengthening character education in every school. This paper describes the concept of character education and the implementation of school culture-based character education. The implementation of school culture-based character education means an effort to establish character values based on programs run by the education unit. The purpose of this study was to determine the implementation of school culture-based character education at SD Negeri Salem, Pondoksalam District. The research method uses descriptive qualitative data collection techniques through interviews, observations, and documentation studies. The informants who were asked for data were the Principal and Deputy Head of the Salem State Elementary School Curriculum. The results show that the implementation of school culture-based character education at SD Negeri Salem has been run through co-curricular activities (in the learning process), habituation of 7 special Poe Atikan, tatanen activities at Bale Atikan, and other habits such as marching activities before entering class, requiring students to bring lunch from home and making it mandatory to clean the classroom before going home from school. Meanwhile, extracurricular activities are still not going well due to various obstacles, namely the lack of adequate facilities, the absence of extracurricular trainers, and because schools are still in the adaptation stage as a result of COVID-19. Evaluation of the character education program is carried out in the form of observation, self-evaluation, student evaluation, student journal notes and conducting deliberation with all school members.

Abstract

Entrepreneurship education in vocational schools is vital because vocational schools have a unique and complex education system. Vocational education has the opportunity to generate students with practical abilities, knowledge, and skills for work. Such skills and knowledge are crucial to welcome the 4.0 industrial revolution era requiring human resource quality improvement. Therefore, this study reviews the importance of entrepreneurship education in vocational schools, especially in facing the challenges of the 4.0 era. We used a literature study method to analyze the related literature and discuss these issues. We conclude that entrepreneurship education is essential to shape the character of vocational students because such schools accommodate students with competencies for work. Hence, graduates are expected to create job vacancies and set up their businesses. Therefore, we need character-building to support students’ entrepreneurial spirit, and thus, it needs help from the community and the government. The community needs to trust vocational schools to produce graduates prepared for work and create job vacancies. The government also needs to trust the graduates by providing space to work well.

Abstract

The study reviews some articles associated with the effects of oral corrective feedbacks, in affective domain, particularly in the form of affective problems. The data were retrieved from the journal database and selected by using inclusive and exclusive criteria in the systematic review, which were consisted of eleven projects conducted in both EFL and ESL classrooms in some countries. Results demonstrated positive perspective toward oral corrective feedbacks and the usefulness. All the projects admitted that it helped students to be self-reflective on their proficiency, helped to notice their error, and even in a certain case, helped to motivate students. However, simultaneously, it also caused some affective problems such as embarrassment, judgment, overthinking, resentment, worry, self-doubting, losing face, lowering confidence, anxiety, frustration, and withdrawal from future participation. We hypothetically believed that the affective problems are highly affected by the students’ age and maturity, perception, awareness of proficiency level, number of corrective feedbacks, and techniques while delivering the correction. Based on the results, it is suggested that the teacher should consider those aspects. Moreover, I realized that the discussion on oral corrective feedbacks pertinent to the affective domain have been understudied, thus some gaps can be filled out.

Abstract

This research studied the influences of the mother tongue-based multilingual education (MTB-MLE) program in the Philippines in the learning of the English language. The research utilized the case study method to make a thorough, dimensional consideration of MTB-MLE in the Philippines. The research detailed the history of the case and focused on the key issue of the effects of the mother tongue in learning. The study found that there is a need to re-evaluate the MTB-MLE in the Philippines since many language acquisition theories stress the learning of English at an early stage and the teaching of English is not the exclusive concern of the English teacher. Likewise, English is needed by the learner since many written and online data are practically recorded in English and the majority of the social media programs are aired in the English language.   The study recommends that the MTB-MLE should be re-evaluated by the Philippine Department of Education (DepEd) and that the mother tongue should be used merely as an auxiliary (supplementary or supporting) language in teaching.

Abstract

This study comprehensively examined the improvement in the conceptual comprehension and self-efficacy of high school students on exponential functions through the REACT strategy. This quasi-experimental study employed a non-equivalent control group design. This study’s population was the tenth graders in Banda District, Central Maluku Regency, during the 2020/2021 school year. Data were collected using several instruments: a concept comprehension ability test, self-efficacy questionnaire, and observation sheet. Quantitative data analysis was performed to examine if there is (1) an increase in the conceptual comprehension and self-efficacy of tenth graders taught using the REACT strategy on exponential function material, (2) an increase in the conceptual comprehension and self-efficacy of tenth graders taught using the conventional method on exponential function material, (3) a difference in the conceptual comprehension and self-efficacy of tenth graders taught using the REACT strategy compared to those taught using the conventional method on the mastery of exponential function. Data analysis showed the following findings. (1) There was an increase in the conceptual comprehension of students in the experimental class taught using the REACT strategy with an n-gain index of 0.82 (very high). The average final score of conceptual comprehension was 87.91,  which was categorized as very good. Besides, there was an increase in the self-efficacy from intermediate to very high in the experimental class after learning using the REACT strategy. The average student self-efficacy score increased from 60.59 to 91.25. (2) There was an increase in the conceptual comprehension of students in the control class taught using conventional learning with a gain index of 0.37 (intermediate). The average final score of conceptual comprehension was 60.25 within the fair category. Meanwhile, there was no increase in self-efficacy in the control class, indicating that students remained at an intermediate level with an average score of 62.87 to 61.98. (3). A significant difference was found in the conceptual comprehension and self-efficacy between the experimental and control class, represented by the results of the t-test.

Abstract

Phonemic awareness (PA) is the ability to hear and manipulate the sounds in spoken words and the understanding that spoken words and syllables are made up of sequences of speech sounds. PA is important because it can help students to understand the alphabetic principle and it requires students to notice how letters represent sound. This research conducted to find out the phonemic awareness of Indonesian EFL learners. Involving 100 third-semester students of English Language Education Program Universitas Brawijaya, this research examines the English Phonemic Awareness of the Indonesian EFL learners. The instrument of this research is Phonemic Awareness Test adopted from Heggerty (2017). The test measured 5 skills: the awareness of (1) onset fluency, (2) final sound, (3) medial sound, (4) phoneme blending, and (5) phoneme segmenting. The findings of this research reveal that the Phonemic Awareness of Indonesian EFL learners are categorized poor with mean 17.9 (Advance > 29.7). They are struggling in identifying onset fluency, it categorized poor with mean 2.85. Followed by identifying final sound with mean 3.87 from 10 and identifying medial sound with mean 3.97 from 10 that are categorized medium. In blending skill, the mean score is categorized medium since the mean 5.09 from 10. The last is segmentation skill who have category poor since the total score is 1.47 from 10. It can be concluded that Indonesian EFL learners are struggling in identifying English phoneme.

Abstract

Hajj has become part of the rituals of previous religions long before Islam in various nations, including Arabs. Hajj, however, must not be seen simply as a ritual—it indeed has contextual meaning. In other words, one must understand the essence of hajj for the sole purpose of perfect obedience to Allah SWT (kaaffah). This study aimed to analyze the importance of hajj to school-age children’s education. We tried to contextually interpret the ritual (hajj) to develop the learning curriculum of the Islamic Religious Education (Pendidikan Agama Islam - PAI) from elementary, secondary, and senior high school levels. Our findings confirmed four educative values of hajj powerfully relevant to the Islamic Religious Education: relationality between Allah SWT as the Creator and human beings as the creation, relationality among human beings, relationality between human beings and other beings, and relationality of human beings with themselves. Those relationality values are then integrated into each scope of the curriculum of the Islamic Religious Education at the elementary, secondary, and senior high school levels.
