Abstract

This research aims to analyse the equivalence and the function of all the forms of translation notes that are used to translate cultural words in the “The Mafia Nanny” webtoon. Using a qualitative method through the lenses of Translation Notes and Cultural Words theory by Peter Newmark and the Meaning Equivalent theory by Nida and Taber, this research found a total of 17 cultural words that have been translated with the translation notes procedure, such as 13 data of footnotes and 4 data of body notes. This research also found that the translator mostly uses dynamic equivalence, which is 15 times, while rarely using formal equivalence, which is 2 times, in translating cultural words. Overall, this research demonstrates how the translation notes of cultural words in the webtoon act effectively as supplementary to maintaining the authenticity of the source language while maintaining the meaning equivalence with mostly dynamic equivalence.

Abstract

The growing popularity of translated Japanese literature among Indonesian readers reflects a broader movement of multimodal storytelling and digital reader interaction. This research examines at the way narrative structures and visual aspects create suspense and thematic coherence in Uketsu's Strange Pictures. This research utilizes an intrinsic qualitative method based on Barthes' structuralism and Genette's narratology to investigate how textual and visual cues work together to form meaning. This study examines how the novel's use of time, focalization, and symbolic imagery generates tension while transforming readers into active interpreters. The findings demonstrate that Uketsu's hybrid narrative design combines verbal and visual systems into a continuous semiotic framework, with images contributing not as illustrations but as crucial narrative components.

Abstract

This study discusses how gender factors greatly influence the differences in experiences of Islamophobia experienced by female and male characters in the novels The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf (2006) by Mohja Kahf and Once in a Promised Land (2007) by Laila Halaby. Both novels raise issues of Islamophobia experienced by Muslims, making them representative of Muslims who experience Islamophobia, especially after the events of 9/11. This study uses intersectionality theory, gender-based Islamophobia, and gender performance. This study uses close-reading techniques to analyze the differences in the treatment of Islamophobia caused by the gender of the characters, Khadra and Salwa (female) and Jassim (male).

Abstract

Spatial organization in royal gardens often reflects cosmological concepts rooted in Hindu-Buddhist cultural traditions. Taman Mayura is a royal garden site in Mataram City characterized by a complex spatial arrangement consisting of pavilions, ponds, and temples. This study aims to examine the representation of cosmological concepts within the site’s spatial organization using a spatial archaeological approach. The research applies a qualitative descriptive method through the analysis of the distribution, relationships, and orientation of architectural elements. The results show that the site is organized into three spatial zones: (1)jaba luar; (2) jaba tengah; and (3) jeroan that forms a hierarchical spatial structure. This pattern reflects the concept of Tri Maṇḍala, while the presence of Bale Kambang at the center of a pond on Gili Kencana symbolizes Mahāmeru surrounded by the cosmic ocean. Therefore, the spatial arrangement of Taman Mayura reflects both the organization of a royal garden landscape and cosmological ideas in the past.

Abstract

Abstract: This study examines the local wisdom values embedded in Malangan Masked Wayang (Wayang Topeng Malangan) as a cultural representation of the Malang community. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving cultural practitioners and community members. The findings reveal that Wayang Topeng Malangan contains multidimensional values, including religious, moral, aesthetic, social, and educational values. These values are reflected in ritual practices, narrative structures, artistic elements, and community participation. The study also highlights that this traditional art functions not only as entertainment but also as a medium for cultural transmission, identity formation, and character education. Furthermore, the integration of local wisdom values in education is considered effective in strengthening cultural awareness and moral development among younger generations. In the context of globalization, Wayang Topeng Malangan plays an important role in preserving local identity and cultural sustainability. Therefore, this art form remains relevant as a cultural asset that supports both social cohesion and educational development. Abstract

This study examines a nonconformist figure in Jerry Spinelli’s Stargirl through the Sartrean existentialist framework. It analyzes how Stargirl Caraway negotiates her freedom within a conformist social environment, focusing on her authenticity, the influence of social judgment, and her inner conflict between individuality and conformity. This study employs a qualitative method. Data are drawn from the novel's narrative and dialogues, supported by relevant scholarly sources. The analysis applies Sartrean existentialism, including existence precedes essence, freedom and responsibility, the look, being-for-others, bad faith, and being-for-itself. The findings show that Stargirl defines her existence through her choices and actions. However, social rejection leads her to temporarily conform and abandon her authenticity. She eventually returns to her authentic self, demonstrating that human existence is continuously shaped through conscious choices.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the representation of the banality of evil in the actions of Reiner Braun, Bertholdt Hoover, and Annie Leonhart in the anime Attack on Titan. Their actions against the people of Paradis cause them to be viewed as enemies of humanity. However, it was eventually revealed that their crimes are not driven by personal motives, but are related to Marley’s ideological system, which shapes their way of thinking and actions. Therefore, Hannah Arendt’s concept of the banality of evil is used as the analytical framework in this study. This research uses a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach. The data were collected through note-taking techniques on dialogues and scenes in Attack on Titan and analyzed using interactive analysis. The results show that the banality of evil is represented through the characters’ failure to listen to their conscience, blind obedience to duty, and Marley’s ideological influence.

Abstract

Blade Runner (1982) and The Avengers (2012) are separated by thirty years, yet both cast women in roles that appear, on the surface, physically formidable. This study compares gender representation across both films along four dimensions: characterization, fighting style, costume, and image representation. Through qualitative textual analysis and a comparative framework, drawing on Butler's theory of gender performativity and role typology from Tasker, Gilpatric, and Inness as primary analytical instruments, the study finds that the most significant representational shifts have occurred at the narrative and costume levels, while the physical homogeneity of female characters remains unchanged across the thirty-year interval. This suggests that progress in gender representation is hierarchical — more achievable at the level of narrative than at the level of how the female body is visually constructed.

Abstract

The increasingly complex ecological crisis reflects a disharmonious relationship between humans and nature. This study aims to describe the representation of ecotheology in Lamongan folktales through the concepts of mizan (ecological balance), ihya’ al-mawat (land revitalization), and fasad fil-ardh (the prohibition of environmental destruction). The study employs an ecocritical approach with a qualitative descriptive method. The data consist of excerpts from interview transcripts with narrators of Lamongan folktales. The findings reveal that ecotheological values are represented through ecological balance, land rehabilitation and reforestation, and the prohibition of ecological and socio-ecological destruction. These findings indicate that Lamongan folktales contain environmental ethics grounded in spiritual, cultural, and religious values, making them a potential medium for local wisdom-based ecological education.

Abstract

Hero’s journey is a theory that unveils the narrative structure and process of becoming a hero. Christopher Vogler argues that the structure and pattern of becoming a hero is often depicted in contemporary literature and one of them is How To Train Your Dragon (2003) novel. This research is trying to discover the twelve stages of Hiccup’s journey in Christopher Vogler’s theory that mapped throughout the narrative. Not only that, this research also uses the archetype theory by Christopher Vogler depicted in Hiccup’s journey as a hero and trickster archetype that successfully operates in his journey. This research is using the textual analysis method and close reading to find the evidence substantially and essentially, so that hopefully this research could contribute to future research on How To Train Your Dragon (2003) novel and literature, especially hero’s journey.
