Abstract

Mangongkal holi is a secondary burial ritual of the Toba Batak tribe that can only be performed in the hometown of each clan located around Lake Toba. As the highest ritual in Toba Batak customs, Mangongkal Holi is a representation of the cultural identity of the Toba Batak tribe. Based on this, Mangongkal Holi can be an integral part in relation to the government's efforts to revitalise Lake Toba as a tourist destination. This article aims to analyse the potential of the Mangongkal Holi ritual as a cultural destination. The results of the analysis prove that the presence of dance, percussion, and ritual performance elements in the mangongkal holi procession of mangongkal holi has the potential as a cultural tourism destination for national and international tourists. The implementation of mangongkal holi also has an impact on the creative economy industry at the location of implementation. However, the potential of mangongkal holi as a cultural tourism destination is hampered by an unstructured implementation schedule and socialisation of ritual implementation which tends to be exclusive to the Batak toba clan.

Abstract

Community empowerment programs seem to be a necessity, especially when development and industrialization programs have negative impacts on various groups, including indigenous communities. However, community empowerment, which is intended to improve the lives of affected communities, in practice often has unanticipated impacts. This study analyzes the social dynamics of the Sakai community in Riau Province related to the empowerment programs received by the community. This study used a mini-ethnography method by conducting participant observation and non-participatory observation techniques as well as in-depth interviews in data collection. To complete the data, secondary data collection was also carried out, including those that could be obtained online. The results of the study indicate that the empowerment programs that have been carried out, in addition to providing benefits to some members of the community, have also created gaps among community members which have led to the social disintegration of the Sakai community. The implementation of community empowerment programs by companies evenly and the involvement of the government and other stakeholders in program implementation are necessary.

Abstract

One of Indonesia's intangible cultural heritages that needs to be preserved is pencak silat. Through knowledge transfer, such cultural heritage is transmitted from one generation to the next. This study aims to elaborate the knowledge transfer process carried out by Silat Sutera Baja Kemayoran Community. This research adopts qualitative case study to gain in-depth understanding of knowledge transfer performed in the community. Research data was obtained through observation and interviews of five informants. Data analysis conveys reduction, data presentation, and conclusions. The results shows that knowledge of Silat Sutera Baja is transferred from Silat instructors to the students through training. The knowledge transfer process takes four stages, including initiation, transfer, ramp-up, and integration. The initiation of knowledge transfer stems from the instructors' motivation to maintain the culture and facilitate students.  Transferring knowledge is carried out by giving examples of the movements followed by students, while knowledge other than movement is given by storytelling. At the ramp-up stage, students' knowledge is known by how they show the movements they have mastered, while at the implementation stage, students' knowledge is known when they practice competing. The Silat Sutera Baja community requires more suitable equipment and space for their knowledge transfer practice.  Despite these constraints, the instructors can continue passing their knowledge to the younger generation.

Abstract

In the era of technological and information modernization, the need for information is one of the basic needs for human life. It makes various community groups develop ways of life to meet these needs. One of them was carried out by the people of Melung Village, who independently built an internet network in their village to obtain access to information from outside Melung Village. The difficult location and being in the mountains make this business known to many, so Melung Village is nicknamed the Internet Village or Digital Village. In its development, this embedded predicate, or nickname affects how people recognize themselves and represent their identity. This research wants to explore more deeply how the dynamics and formation of sociocultural identities for the community are located. This study uses ethnographic methods to obtain field data. Ethnography was chosen to obtain data from the perspective of cultural stakeholders, in this case, the people of Melung village. The results of this study show that the people of Melung Village do not deliberately embed the identity of the digital village but rather introduce the public to Melung Village, a remote village with good internet access. In its development, this identity is interpreted by the community not only as the identity of the village but also as the identity of the people of Melung Village.

Abstract

This study investigates the declining interest in Tengklung Gobleg, a traditional martial art from Gobleg Village, Buleleng, Bali. Employing a qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews, field observations, documentation, and literature review. The analysis drew on perspectives from globalization, social identity theory, and related concepts. The findings indicate several contributing factors to the decline: limited socialization, lack of awareness among the younger generation, paternalistic cultural patterns, insufficient institutional support, and a growing preference for instant gratification among potential trainees. A key insight from this study is the shift in youth perception—Tengklung Gobleg is increasingly seen as outdated, while martial arts from outside Bali and Indonesia are viewed as more appealing and relevant. This reflects a broader cultural shift influenced by global exposure and changing social values.

Abstract

The role of stakeholder synergy in developing geotourism-based tourist attractions is an urgent matter that can be realized. The low level of cooperation between stakeholders in the Widosari tourist village can be seen in several notes, such as the suboptimal construction of roads that are used as a means to get to tourist locations, the suboptimal construction of facilities at the tourist attraction, the suboptimal number of workers at the tourist location are important notes so that stakeholder collaboration can be realized immediately. Research that is studied qualitatively by presenting stakeholder theory can be a bridge to build comprehensive cooperation. Collaboration between stakeholders is the pillars of realizing sustainable tourism development, especially in the nature-based tourism sector. Sustainable planning in the Widosari Tourist Village is a form of optimal environmental communication development, because it involves all existing components, both the community, government, private parties and Pokdarwis itself. The results of research conducted using the utilization of a number of synergistic institutions can be a significant solution that the Widosari Tourist Village has great potential that can be developed comprehensively.

Abstract

This research investigates the resistance of Malay culture in Pekanbaru City in response to cultural disruption on its path toward becoming a megapolitan city. In this context, the influence of technology has proven to play a significant role in altering how the Malay community in Pekanbaru carries out their traditions. However, this study also identifies a series of efforts undertaken to support the vision and mission of Pekanbaru City in preserving and promoting Malay culture. These strategies involve the development of city tourism that incorporates educational and cultural publication aspects of Malay culture, the preservation of Malay culture through an academic approach via educational institutions and libraries, and the use of the Malay language in local regulations as a concrete step in maintaining culture in everyday life. This research is a qualitative study that relies on observation, interviews, documentation studies, and interactions with stakeholders in Pekanbaru City to gain a deep understanding of the resistance of Malay culture amidst the ongoing cultural transformation.

Abstract

This research aims to explain the construction of Dayak identity in students of Santo Paulus Pontianak Senior High School (SMA), who are active as ethnic Dayak artists. The research problem is that there is a lot of identity politicisation that hinders the process of equality and justice in society. Identity politicisation can be seen in general elections, regional head elections, and many mass organisations affiliated with ethnic identity. This research is a qualitative research with a looking-glass self approach from symbolic interactionism theory. The research subjects were 10 students who were active as ethnic Dayak artists. Data collection was conducted from January to March 2024. The result of the research is that the construction of Dayak identity is influenced by several things, namely (1) the influence of practical politics; (2) mystical stories; (3) the history of ethnic conflict; (4) life that depends on nature; and (5) customary law or customs. These constructions of identity contain problems, such as underutilising cultural perspectives, lacking historical breadth, and concealing the many riches of Dayak identity. This research is important to do because the politicisation of identity still occurs frequently. There needs to be an effort to understand these various identities so that identity construction is not easily trapped in pragmatic and opportunistic interests.

Abstract

Married life is often characterized by various conflicts. Marital conflicts that occur in each married couple will be different and unique. One of the factors related to the dynamics of marital conflict is the socioeconomic status of the family. The study aimed to describe the forms, causes, and impacts of marital conflict in high and low social classes. Researchers used qualitative methods for data collection, namely structured and in-depth interviews, observations of informants from 10 families living in Padang City. Informants were determined intentionally (purposive sampling) based on education, occupation, income of the married couple, and assets owned. The data obtained through structured interviews are presented through frequency tables and explained in more depth based on the data and information collected through in-depth interviews and observations. The data is interpreted qualitatively by combining existing categories to create descriptions based on relevant literature studies. The results of the study identified 6 families from high social class and 4 families from low social class. Conflicts between spouses, ranging from quarrels to domestic violence, were observed across both high and low socio-economic classes. However, the nature of the conflicts differed, with high social class conflicts mainly involving psychological domestic violence, while those in the lower social class involved physical, economic, and psychological forms of violence.  The cause of marital conflict at high social classes tends to be due to differences in priorities. The wife wants the presence and attention of her husband more, while the husband prioritizes work or career achievement and hobbies as a status symbol. Conflict arises related to pressure to maintain a lifestyle according to social status. The causes of conflict at low social classes are dominated by financial pressure, division of household tasks, childcare, and home atmosphere. In general, marital conflict disrupts emotional conditions such as anxiety, stress/trauma. Physically healthy, the intensity of interaction with the partner is decreasing.

Abstract

This research investigates how Gamal music in the Dayak Jawant community of West Kalimantan, Indonesia has evolved from scared tradition to contemporary cultural expression, examining how these adaptations reflect the negotiation between cultural preservation and modernization. Traditionally integral to rituals and spiritual life, Gamal music has undergone significant transformations through the adoption of new instruments and styles influenced by global and economic factors, as observed during events like the XI Dayak Gawai Week. Through ethnographic methods, this study examines the balance between heritage preservation and innovation. The research explores contested notions of cultural authenticity, indigenous responses to modernity, and music’s role in preserving cultural identity. While acknowledging traditionalist’ concern, this study argues that these adaptations are essential for Gamal music’s continued relevance and survival. By documenting this music evolution, this research contributing to understanding how traditional art forms can develop sustainable pathways forward, maintaining cultural significance while responding to external pressures. This model potentially applies to other indigenous cultural expressions facing similar challenges in rapidly changing environments. This study ultimately reveals how Gamal music serves as a dynamic vehicle for cultural expression, adapting to contemporary context while preserving core communal values.
