Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the types of errors in speech acts in the use of everyday Arabic at the Foreign Language Development Center of Dar al-Lughah wa al-Karamah Institute, Kraksaan, Probolinggo. The study focuses on pragmatic errors that emerge in students’ interactions outside the classroom, including directive speech acts (requests, commands), expressive acts (gratitude, apologies), commissive acts (promises), and representative acts (statements). The findings reveal four main patterns of errors: (1) the use of grammatically correct structures that are inappropriate for the social context (e.g., giving direct commands to seniors), (2) the use of overly direct speech acts perceived as impolite (e.g., using “a‘ṭinī” [give me] without a politeness marker), (3) errors in selecting culturally appropriate expressive forms (e.g., insincere or exaggerated expressions of thanks or apology), and (4) code-mixing with Indonesian or Javanese/Madurese, which disrupts the coherence of speech acts. The main contributing factors include pragmatic interference from the mother tongue, a lack of deep understanding of politeness norms in Arab culture, and limited exposure to authentic interactions with native speakers. This study recommends integrating explicit instruction on pragmatics and cross-cultural politeness into the curriculum of the Foreign Language Development Center, as well as increasing the use of simulations of real social contexts in learning.

Abstract

Nahwu instruction for beginners remains challenged by static materials and limited digital integration. This study aims to develop FlipHTML5-based electronic instructional material entitled Nahwu lil Mubtadi and to examine its feasibility and students’ responses. Using a Research and Development (R&D) approach, a simplified seven-stage Borg and Gall model was employed, grounded in Richard E. Mayer’s Multimedia Learning Theory. The participants included content experts, media experts, Arabic language experts, and beginner-level students at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Sukorejo Situbondo. Data were collected through questionnaires, observations, and documentation, and analyzed descriptively using quantitative and qualitative methods. The results indicate that the developed material achieved a highly feasible category based on expert evaluations (88%–91%) and received highly positive student responses (90%). Therefore, the FlipHTML5-based Nahwu lil Mubtadi material is suitable for beginner-level nahwu learning.

Abstract

This study examines how three patterns of grammatical examples in Alfiyah instruction affect the intrinsic motivation of 46 female students in the special 3A class at Madrasah Muallimin Muallimat, Pesantren Bahrul Ulum, Tambakberas, Jombang. The three patterns include repeated vocabulary across nahwu chapters, stable simple lexico-grammatical arrangements, and unfamiliar Qur’anic verses that did not appear in the fiqh and hadith books studied by the students at the same time. This study used a quantitative one-group pretest-posttest design. Data were collected through an adapted 30-item Intrinsic Motivation Inventory after validity and reliability testing. The data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially, then interpreted through Self-Determination Theory, formal operational stage, and metalinguistic awareness. The findings show that students’ intrinsic motivation decreased from a pretest mean of 3.87 (SD = 0.42) to a posttest mean of 3.31 (SD = 0.28). The smaller posttest SD indicates that students’ responses became more homogeneous around a lower motivation level, while the difference-score SD (0.32) shows that the magnitude of decline still varied across students. A paired sample t-test confirmed a significant decline, t(45) = -11.84, p < .001, with a large effect size, dz = -1.75. The findings indicate that overly repetitive, overly simple, and weakly contextualized examples may reduce interest, cognitive challenge, and learning relatedness in Alfiyah instruction
