Abstract

This article is focused on how to analyse any moral values portrayed in the memoir "Educated," with particular emphasis on the protagonist, Tara Westover. The study intends to identify conflicts encountered by the main character through narration or dialogues with other characters, and to reveal moral values that emerge as she overcomes these conflicts. The research utilized a qualitative descriptive method and drew on the conflict theory proposed by Stanton (1965) and the theory of moral values put forth by Linda and Eyre (1993) to analyse data from the memoir. Two of the conflicts found in this study were both internal struggles by the main character involving her thoughts and feelings and external struggles with her father, abusive older brother, and family members who labelled her as a dangerous girl influenced by Satan. Through her resolution on these conflicts, the main character demonstrated various moral values, including self-reliance, self-discipline, courage, and respect. The study's findings emphasize the significance of spiritual metamorphosis in memoirs and literature, as well as how conflicts can facilitate such transformation. The acquisition of L2 in this study was studied based on Psycholinguistics where in addition to the language spoken there was also the development of behavior and attitude of the child hermself obtained from watching cartoons. The selection of entertainment programs is an important concern for parents in build the character of children. Abstract

In the context of English teaching and learning, teachers can employ communication strategies to facilitate students' comprehension of the study material. The aim of this study is to outline the categories of communication strategies used by an English teacher at SDN 2 Jatiluwih. This investigation takes a descriptive qualitative approach, focusing on an English teacher within the SDN 2 Jatiluwih setting. During the observations in the 6th grade English class in SDN 2 Jatiluwih, the teacher not only use simple English but also employed body language. Moreover, the students there were quite unique because they tended to use the Indonesian language. Therefore, the teacher, in this case, it was required to use various communication strategies in teaching. The theoretical framework for this study relies on Dornyei's communication strategies theory. The research outcomes reveal that the teacher employed five distinct communication strategies in the classroom to support student learning, namely stalling or time-gaining strategies (1.724%), literal translation (1.724%), prefabricated patterns (5.17%), non-linguistic signals (12.07%), and code-switching (79.31%).

The purpose of this research is to identify moral values through dialog with the main characters or conflicts faced and reveal the moral values that arise from efforts to overcome conflicts. This research uses descriptive qualitative method and uses moral value theory by Burhan Nurgiyantoro (2013) in analyzing the data obtained in the novel. The main character in this novel faces many conflicts and also interacts with other characters. The main character overcomes these problems by demonstrating the moral value of helping other humans and showing compassion. This study found six moral values of human relationships with other humans in several aspects, such as to sense humankind and to be helpful to individuals.

Abstract

Notwithstanding the fact that ?? youmo ‘humour’ is a neologism and transliteration coined in the 1920s, the conception has been existing in Chinese civilisation for millennia. The earliest extant treatise on humour in Chinese literature is regarded to be an anthology ?? Xiao Lin ‘The Forest of Laughs’ cumulated circa 2ndc CE, yet the most illustrious pre-modern jestbook is a 1791 assemblage entitled ???? Xiao Lin Guang Ji ‘A Collection of Classic Chinese Jokes’. In the 2000s, stand-up comedy entered China’s entertainment market as a niche cultural import, though it was, and still is, mistranslated into ??? tuokouxiu ‘talk show’. Recently, stand-up comedy attains visibility in China by means of phenomenal online programmes. I postulate that Chinese stand-up comedy is featured by unique attributes, in that it is disparate from ‘A Collection of Classic Chinese Jokes’ and the traditional theatrical comedy called ?? xiangsheng ‘cross-talk’, and it is not parallel to its equivalent in the West either. To be more specific, being subject to stringent censorship, stand-up comedy in China is circumspect about content appertaining to (homo)sexual titillation and supernaturalism. Nonetheless, I posit that in terms of inducing humorous effects, contemporary stand-up comedy still evinces similitude to ‘A Collection of Classic Chinese Jokes’ from phonetic, semantic and pragmatic perspectives.

Abstract

Interrogative sentences are deployed to perform speech acts of asking questions or making requests. Interestingly, the syntax of interrogatives in Yorùbá has attracted the attention of many researchers in the language (Ìl??rí, 2010: ?lá?rewájú & Táíwò, 2020: ?lá?rewájú 2022). However, the correct feature specification and syntactic behaviour of question nouns (hence, QNs) are yet to be given adequate attention. Some of the extant works in the language equate QNs in Yorùbá with wh-phrases of English and some other Indo-European languages, This paper, within the confines of the Chomsky’s Minimalist Program, discusses the two existing views on how constituent interrogatives involving QNs are clause-typed (the traditional opinion hypothesizing that QNs are the question makers in constituent interrogatives while the other position holds the views that an abstract question morpheme clause-types a sentence as a constituent question). This paper lays some claims to support the traditional position that a clause is typed a constituent question by the transfer of the question force [QF] on a QN to the Inter0 through specifier and head agreement. Primary and secondary data were collected and subjected to syntactic analysis. QNs in the language are ta ‘who’ and kí ‘what’, èló ‘how much’, mélòó ‘how many’ and so on. Polysyllabic QNs are derivational in the language. Yorùbá content word questions, relative clauses, adverbials and so on are not signalled in wh-encripts unlike English. The language operates different functional heads to clause-type them.

Abstract

This study embarked on fostering grammar learning outcomes of tenth-grade students at MAN Kota Blitar and handling classroom technological inclusivity by integrating Quizizz paper mode as a pedagogical tool in teaching Simple Past and Present Perfect Tenses. This study utilized four stages of classroom action research, encompassing planning, implementation, observation and evaluation, and reflection. The researchers used pre-tests, post-tests, and questionnaires for collecting the data. The outcomes unveiled a substantial improvement in students' grammatical learning outcomes, from 66.50 in the pre-test to 89.50 in the post-test. Further, students displayed favorable reactions, affirming the power of Quizizz paper mode in addressing challenges in grammar learning due to its engaging nature, cost-effectiveness, and provision of real-time feedback. Additionally, it fosters inclusivity by allowing every student to participate, irrespective of their access to technology. Moreover, it offers students a chance to rest their eyes and electronic devices while combining physical and digital learning experiences. The findings of this study suggest that integrating technology-based platforms like Quizizz in paper mode can enhance grammar mastery by promoting increased engagement and interactivity among students. Based on those results, it is recommended that future researchers explore Quizizz paper mode for teaching various grammar topics or language skills studies by applying larger sample sizes and examining the prolonged effects of utilizing Quizizz paper mode on students' mastery of grammar or other English sub-skills.

Abstract

Error analysis (hereafter EA) is an essential concept to understand because it frequently comes up in foreign language teaching and learning. This study identified and investigated errors did by Indonesian students according to surface strategy taxonomy (hereafter SST) which classified errors into four kinds, such as omission (OM), addition (AD), misformation (MF), and misordering (MO). To conduct this study, approximately 26 students of English education program, both male and female were participated. The study employed qualitative research. A free writing with the topic of their experience was collected as data collecting. The writer then collected the data, identified, and analysed them by using percentage formula and categorized them to the kinds of errors based on SST. The results showed that the whole errors from students’ writing are 348 errors: omission 8% (27 items), addition 15% (51 tems), misformation 75% (262 items), and misordering 2% (8 items). Therefore, misformations errors is the major errors that common appears in students writing. It is recommended that it is important for the teachers not to ignore students’ errors in English teaching learning process. Keywords: error analysis, surface strategy taxonomy, writing
