Abstract

Loss, whether material or non-material, is an inseparable part of the human experience that is constantly avoided. In a broader perspective, the concept of 'loss' extends beyond the loss of property, encompassing the loss of time, opportunity, and even faith. Despite being the most avoided thing, loss is often inevitable in life. Therefore, it is important to study this phenomenon in depth, especially from the perspective of the Quran as the primary source of guidance for Muslims. This study explores the acculturation of the Qur'an and Javanese culture through a linguistic analysis of the various translations of the term khasara (loss/ruin) in K.H. Bisri Musthofa's Tafsir Al-Ibriz. As a significant local Javanese commentary, Tafsir Al-Ibriz offers a unique lens to understand how Islamic sacred texts are contextualized within diverse cultural frameworks. Utilizing a qualitative methodology and library research, this study systematically inventories and analyzes 60 occurrences of khasara within the Qur'an, focusing on their interpretations in Tafsir Al-Ibriz. Findings reveal seven distinct translations for khasara in Tafsir Al-Ibriz: rugi, ngerugekake, tuno, ketunan, nunaake, kapitunan, and getun. Each translation is shown to carry specific semantic and pragmatic nuances rooted in Javanese cultural lexicon, transcending mere literal equivalents to convey deeper spiritual, ethical, and existential implications. This linguistic adaptation not only facilitates broader understanding among Javanese society but also demonstrates the dynamic interplay between divine revelation and local wisdom. The study concludes that K.H. Bisri Musthofa's Tafsir Al-Ibriz stands as a profound example of cultural adaptation in Qur'anic exegesis, highlighting how indigenous languages and cultural expressions can enrich the comprehension and internalization of religious teachings. This research contributes to the broader discourse on local tafsir traditions and the phenomenon of acculturation in Islamic intellectual history.

Abstract

This research aims to critically examine the interpretive framework developed by Jorge J.E. Gracia, as applied to the interpretation of the Qur'anic verse Surah al-Nisa’ [4]: 1, which addresses the creation of women. The focus of this research is to critique the application of the hermeneutical approach in strengthening the principle of gender equality and reconstructing existing interpretations of the origins and social roles of women in the Islamic context. This qualitative analysis employs a descriptive-analytic methodology and utilizes desk research techniques for data collection and analysis. The critique is contextualized through the epistemological framework of Ulumul Qur'an, which serves as the foundational basis for Islamic interpretation. The research outlines the three functions of interpretation embodied in Gracia's hermeneutics—historical, semantic, and implicative—which feminist scholars use to reconceptualize the creation of women and their gender roles. The results indicate that this interpretive approach yields different interpretations from the perspective of classical Islamic theology. The results of this study underscore the limitations and potential risks associated with applying the Western hermeneutical paradigm in Quranic interpretation

Abstract

This article discusses the exemplary character of Prophet Ayyub in facing severe trials in the form of illness, the loss of wealth, children, and social standing, as well as how the values of patience and steadfast faith reflected in his story are interpreted in Tafsir al-Mishbah by M. Quraish Shihab. The focus of this study is to explore the spiritual meanings and social relevance of the story of Prophet Ayyub through a thematic (maudhu‘i) tafsir approach using descriptive–analytical methods. The research is conducted through a literature study of relevant Qur’anic verses, particularly those in Surah Ṣād (38): 41–44 and Surah al-Anbiya’ (21): 83–84. The findings show that Quraish Shihab, through his tahlili and adabi-ijtima‘i approach, emphasizes that the patience of Prophet Ayyub is not mere passive endurance but an active and sincere submission to the will of Allah SWT. These values are highly relevant to modern life, which is filled with psychological pressures and social challenges. Through contextual and communicative explanations, this tafsir provides readers with deep insights into the meaning of life’s trials and the importance of spirituality. The study concludes that the story of Prophet Ayyub, when understood thematically through a contextual interpretation, can serve as a moral foundation and spiritual inspiration in contemporary life. The research contributes theoretically by enriching thematic tafsir studies, particularly in understanding the values of patience and steadfast faith from an adabi-ijtima‘i perspective. Practically, it offers a spiritual framework for modern society in facing life pressures—presenting patience not as passive acceptance but as a positive energy that fosters moral resilience, optimism, and closeness to God. The study reaffirms that the story of Prophet Ayyub, when approached thematically through contextual exegesis, can provide moral grounding and spiritual inspiration for contemporary living.

Abstract

This article aims to discuss the interconnection between students and mentors as described in the book al-Anwār al-Qudsiyyah by Sheikh Abdul Wahab Asy-Sya'rani. This is based on the relationship between students and mentors in the Sufi tradition, which is not only pedagogical, but also spiritual and existential. Asy-Sya’rani’s al-Anwār al-Qudsiyyah serves as an important reference for understanding the dynamics of this interconnection. Through a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach to the text, this article explores the model of the relationship established between the disciple and the spiritual guide, including ethical dimensions, spiritual hierarchy, and inner growth. The study’s findings indicate that this relationship is based on the principle of spiritual connection (ittishāl rūḥānī), which emphasizes the disciple’s total devotion (khidmah) and the spiritual responsibility of the mursyid. Additionally, it was found that Asy-Sya’rani emphasizes the importance of etiquette as the primary foundation in this relationship, which serves as the key to effectively transforming the disciple’s religious experience into a complete spiritual awareness. This article contributes to enriching the body of knowledge on tarekat practices by highlighting how classical texts such as al-Anwār al-Qudsiyyah remain contextual in addressing contemporary challenges, particularly in maintaining the continuity of Islamic spiritual traditions amid crises of authority and the fragmentation of religious identity.

Abstract

This article aims to discuss the Qur'an's view on sexual deviance with reference to Hamka's Tafsir al-Azhar. One of the controversial issues in Indonesia is the emergence of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. They not only demand that their rights be respected but also fight for same-sex marriage to be legalized under marriage law. In the Qur'an, homosexuality is considered an abominable act that crosses boundaries. However, this issue seems to never cease being discussed, and it is becoming increasingly prevalent across all social strata. In fact, such behavior is strictly prohibited in the Qur'an and is clearly evident in the story of Prophet Lot. This study employs a qualitative method with a literature review (library research) approach. Through descriptive analysis using thematic interpretation, the research findings indicate that several verses of the Qur’an address homosexuality in connection with the story of the people of Prophet Lot. The Qur’an uses the term al-fāḥisyah to refer to same-sex sexual relations—whether between men or between women—which also signifies an act of extreme depravity. In Hamka's interpretation, this act is categorized as a despicable act that cannot be justified under any circumstances. This study contributes to the clear moral and ethical dimensions of al-Qur'an regarding al-fāḥisyah, while strengthening the classical and contemporary perspectives on the prohibition of deviant sexual behavior. This research also provides a foundation for strengthening the discourse on Islamic ethics in issues of sexuality, especially in the context of thematic (maudhu’i) readings of verses that are relevant to moral challenges in the modern era.

Abstract

The recurring phenomenon of social deviance and moral degradation in society confirms the relevance of studying verses in the Qur'an that contain social criticism in the form of satire. This article aims to analyze social and moral criticism in satirical verses of the Qur'an using a maudhūʿī (thematic) approach and linguistic analysis (rhetoric, pragmatics, and critical discourse). This is a qualitative study analyzing four representative surahs, al-Maʿūn (107:1–7), al-Mutaffifīn (83:1–3), al-Humazah (104:1–9), and al-Munāfiqūn (63:1–3), selected based on their rhetorical power in criticizing deviant behavior. The results show that the Qur’an uses rhetorical devices such as irony, repetition, contrast, and labeling to shame hypocritical, materialistic, and anti-social behavior; for example, Surah al-Maʿūn emphasizes the contrast between ritual piety and social negligence, while Surah al-Mutaffifīn criticizes economic injustice through irony. These findings show that Qur'anic satire not only functions as a moral admonition, but also as an instrument of social discourse that builds collective awareness of justice, caring, communication ethics, and spiritual integrity. This study enriches thematic exegesis by offering a linguistic perspective on reading the function of Qur'anic satire an approach that has been relatively rare in previous studies.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the transformative role of revelation-based education by exploring the principles of the Qur’an and their relevance to the dynamics of contemporary Islamic education. The scope of the study encompasses philosophical, normative, and practical dimensions of Qur’anic principles in shaping a holistic paradigm of Islamic education. The research employs a library research method with a content analysis approach to Qur’anic verses related to educational principles, supported by classical and modern Islamic educational literature. The findings indicate that Qur’anic principles, such as monotheism (tawhid), justice, responsibility, and the development of human potential play a significant role in promoting a more integrative, humanistic, and adaptive transformation of Islamic education in response to contemporary challenges. The novelty of this research lies in its systematic effort to link the principles of revelation with the concept of educational transformation, thereby positioning the Qur’an not only as a normative source of values but also as a dynamic foundation for formulating new directions in Islamic education.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the concept of a health-promoting dietary pattern based on the interpretation of QS. Al-Wāqi‘ah [56]: 20–21 by classical and modern Qur’anic exegetes, alongside perspectives from nutritional health sciences that affirm these interpretations through empirical research. The study employs a thematic approach combined with nutritional science and uses a library research method. The analysis focuses on QS. Al-Wāqi‘ah [56]: 20–21 by examining tafsir sources that offer linguistic explanations of the verses and their relevance to contemporary nutritional discourse, including Tafsīr Mafātīḥ al-Ghayb, Tafsīr al-Munīr, Tafsīr Ma‘ālim al-Tanzīl, and Tafsīr al-Miṣbāḥ. The findings indicate that the interpretations of these verses show meaningful relevance to nutritional health, supported by current scientific studies. In the field of Qur’anic exegesis, the precedence of “fruit” before “meat” in the verse is understood as an indication that fruit is lighter, digests faster, is more easily processed by the body, and can stimulate appetite before the main meal. This interpretation aligns with nutritional science, particularly research from Japan demonstrating that structuring meal order—beginning with vegetables and proteins before carbohydrates—can slow the post-meal rise in blood glucose levels. Thus, the interpretation of this verse can be viewed as offering a practical and beneficial dietary model for maintaining nutritional health.

Abstract

This study examines the integration of intellectual and spiritual dimensions in education through the perspective of Hadith Tarbawi and Humanistic Educational Psychology. The main problem addressed in this research is the imbalance of modern education, which tends to prioritize cognitive intelligence while neglecting moral and emotional values. Using a qualitative approach with a library research method, this study explores primary sources from Hadith Tarbawi related to the education of reason (‘aql) and heart (qalb), as well as secondary sources discussing the theories of humanistic psychology proposed by Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow. The findings indicate that both Hadith Tarbawi and Humanistic Educational Psychology share a similar vision of human development: the integration of intellect, emotion, and spirituality. The Hadith emphasizes purification of the soul (tazkiyah al-nafs) and moral balance, while humanistic psychology promotes empathy, freedom, and self-actualization. The integration of these two perspectives forms a comprehensive educational paradigm that nurtures intellectual excellence alongside moral and spiritual maturity. Thus, the study concludes that the balance between reason and heart is essential in shaping a holistic education system that fosters intelligent, ethical, and compassionate individuals. The findings of this study provide a conceptual contribution through an integrative mapping of tarbawi values and humanistic psychology, which may inform theoretical development and guide educators in designing learning practices that are more humanistic and value-driven.
