Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of the takrir method, identify the factors influencing its success, and analyze its effectiveness in enhancing students’ memorization. This study is motivated by the importance of applying the takrir method in strengthening and improving Qur’an memorization among students at Rumah Qur’an Maskanul Muttaqin. Although the takrir method has been implemented as the main strategy in the tahfidz program, its application has not been fully optimal, as indicated by several students who have not yet reached their targeted memorization goals. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing observation, interviews, and documentation as data collection techniques. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, with data validity ensured through source triangulation and persistent observation. The findings indicate that the takrir method is implemented in a scheduled and structured manner as part of daily activities; however, its effectiveness varies due to differences in students’ discipline, motivation, and time management, particularly among university-level students. Supporting factors include internal motivation, discipline, teacher competence, and institutional support, while obstacles involve limited time and additional academic responsibilities. Overall, the takrir method contributes positively to strengthening memorization and encouraging consistent revision. This study contributes to a better understanding of the takrir method in nonformal tahfidz institutions, highlighting both theoretical insights and practical guidance. It demonstrates that the method can be effective when supported by strong institutional guidance, capable instructors, and high student motivation, providing a reference for enhancing memorization strategies among students with diverse academic and personal responsibilities.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the application of Principle Twenty-One (The Qur’an in its guidance corresponds to time and circumstances in its rulings that are based on custom and tradition), Principle Eighteen (Releasing and restricting guidance and misguidance), and Principle Twenty-Six (Qur’anic verses that contain limitations (qayd/exceptions/qualifications) cannot have their legal rulings applied unless those conditions or limitations are fulfilled, except in certain verses that are indeed exempted by other evidence) from the work Qawāʿid al-Ḥisān fī Tafsīr al-Qur’ān in the verses of Islamic family law. The discussion focuses on their relevance to Indonesian positive law. Using a qualitative-normative method with comparative analysis between classical fiqh and national regulations, this study shows that several family law verses, such as QS. al-Baqarah [2]: 229 and 231, contain a muthlaq–muqayyad structure that opens space for legal change in accordance with developments in time, place, and social conditions. Principle Twenty-One affirms that Qur’anic guidance in social matters refers back to ‘urf, so that the practices of khulu’, ṭalāq, and the prohibition of ḍirār undergo significant adjustment in the present time. Principle Eighteen indicates that verses which appear absolute are often explained by other verses through the mention of legal causes related to human behavior. Principle Twenty-Six affirms that a legal ruling does not apply without the fulfillment of its binding element, except where there is evidence that exempts it. In the Indonesian context, this dynamic is reflected in the transformation of the concept of khulu’ into a divorce lawsuit, the regulation of ṭalāq through court registration, and the criminalization of psychological violence and family neglect as stipulated in the UUPKDRT. This study concludes that the application of these three principles of interpretation affirms the flexibility of Islamic family law and its compatibility with national legal reform.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relevance of Nurcholish Madjid's hermeneutical thinking in the development of contemporary Indonesian Islamic discourse. As one of the most influential Islamic reformers in Indonesia, Nurcholish Madjid offers a hermeneutical approach that emphasizes rationality, contextualization, and openness to universal values. His ideas regarding the importance of returning to the substance of Islamic teachings (al-rujūʿ ilā al-uṣūl) and his rejection of the sacralization of culture form the basis for re-reading religious texts in a fresher way that is more relevant to the challenges of modernity. This study uses a qualitative method based on literature review and data analysis with a contextual hermeneutic approach. The results show that Cak Nur's hermeneutics remain relevant in responding to Islamic issues such as pluralism, religious moderation, democracy, and the relationship between religion and the state. His approach not only enriches the methodology of Islamic interpretation but also offers a theological foundation for strengthening an inclusive and progressive Islam in Indonesia. This relevance makes Cak Nur's thoughts an important reference in building a dialogical, critical, and contextual Islamic discourse amid the dynamics of Indonesian Muslim society today. This article contributes to the expansion of hermeneutics as an interpretive framework capable of critically and contextually bridging religious texts with social reality. This article broadens the understanding of Cak Nur's thinking not merely as intellectual discourse, but as an operational paradigm relevant to the development of dialogical and transformative Islamic discourse amid the dynamics of contemporary Indonesian Muslim society.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the interaction between the Salafi approach to religious interpretation and the development of modern science, focusing on their responses to the theory of evolution, cosmology, and other scientific phenomena. This study is motivated by the Salafi approach, which is known for its effort to preserve the purity of Islamic teachings through a literal understanding of the Qur'an and hadith. Using a qualitative method with an in-depth literature study of Salafi scholars’ writings, exegetical works, and academic sources, the data are analyzed through a thematic approach to understand the interaction with and responses to science within the Salafi doctrinal framework. The findings show that Salafi exegesis tends to adopt a selective stance toward modern science. They accept scientific theories or findings as long as they do not contradict textual evidence (dalil naqli), but reject ideas considered potentially harmful to Islamic creed or diminishing the purity of the textual meaning. This stance affirms the Salafi role in maintaining Islamic orthodoxy while simultaneously opening space for possible dialogue with the scientific community. Thus, the integration of religion and science from a Salafi perspective remains possible, provided that it is situated within a framework of respect for the sacred texts. Ultimately, this approach may serve as an important contribution to enriching mutual understanding amid the challenges of the modern era. This article contributes to the discourse on religion–science integration by positioning revelation as the primary epistemology. This model expands the typology of religion–science relations in Islamic studies and provides insight into the dynamics of Islamic orthodoxy in the modern era.

Abstract

This article aims to explain and analyze the relationship between the recitation of Qur’anic verses and the physiological response of basil plants. Using an exploratory research type, this article examines the possibility of the influence of Qur’anic recitation on living beings other than humans, while also formulating a Qur’anic concept regarding this phenomenon within the framework of scientific interpretation (tafsir sains). The method used in this research is an experimental method by comparing two basil plant objects, namely one plant that is exposed to the recitation of the Qur’an and another plant that is not exposed to such recitation. The research process was carried out for 15 days, starting from June 3, 2025, until June 17, 2025. The results of the study show that the plant that was recited with Qur’anic verses physiologically had leaves that appeared perfectly wide, with no blackened leaves, no small holes in the leaves, and no leaves that were rotten. In contrast, the basil plant that was not exposed to the recitation of the Qur’an showed poorer conditions, indicated by curved leaves, the appearance of blackened parts of the leaves, and the presence of small holes on the surface of the leaves. These findings indicate that the concept of syifā’ in the Qur’an can be interpreted as a form of healing or remedy for various disturbances, which in the context of this study is reflected in the condition of plant leaves that are wilted, blackened, or damaged so that the plant can grow more healthily and optimally. This article contributes to enriching the body of interdisciplinary studies between Qur’anic studies and science, particularly regarding the possible influence of Qur’anic recitation on living beings other than humans.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to examine the concept of hiwār (dialogue) in the Qur’an through the perspective of Tafsir al-Mishbah by M. Quraish Shihab. The main issue addressed is the decline of communication ethics in the modern era and how the principles of Qur’anic dialogue can serve as a reference for building harmonious communication. Using a thematic-hermeneutic approach, this study seeks to describe the forms, principles, and functions of hiwār based on verses containing dialogue, such as those in QS. al-Kahfi, al-Mujadalah, Ali Imran, Ghafir, al-Hajj, and al-Syura. The method employed is a descriptive-analytical qualitative approach through direct analysis of Tafsir al-Mishbah and other supporting references. The results of the study indicate that dialogue in the Qur’an is rational, ethical, and solution-oriented; it emphasizes the importance of knowledge, humility, and the prohibition of baseless debate. Furthermore, the concept of ushul marji’iyah—adherence to the Qur’an and Sunnah—emerges as a fundamental principle in resolving differences. These findings affirm that the dialogue method from the perspective of Tafsir al-Mishbah is relevant for application in contemporary social and digital communication to prevent conflict and strengthen the value of brotherhood. This study contributes to the formulation of an applicable framework for Qur’anic communication ethics, emphasizing that hiwār is not merely theological in nature but also possesses a social dimension relevant to addressing the communication crisis in the modern era, particularly within the digital space, which is prone to conflict and disinformation. This makes this study relevant not only for academic research but also for the development of more inclusive and harmonious communication practices.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the dialectical relationship between Qur’anic exegesis and political authority during the New Order era in Indonesia. Studies on Qur’anic exegesis in Indonesia have largely highlighted the influence of the socio-political context on the interpretive process. However, systematic studies that map the diverse responses of exegetical works to political power within a specific authoritarian regime remain relatively limited. Using a qualitative library research method with a descriptive-analytical approach, the study analyzes three representative Indonesian commentaries: Al-Qur’an dan Tafsirnya, published by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Al-Huda by Bakri Syahid, and Dalam Cahaya Al-Qur’an by Syu‘bah Asa. The analysis employs Islah Gusmian’s typology of tafsir: silent tafsir, cosmetic tafsir, and critical tafsir combined with two analytical paradigms: the instrumentalization of tafsir and the actualization of divine values. The findings show that Qur’anic interpretation during the New Order reflects a spectrum of responses to political power, ranging from the depoliticization of Qur’anic verses that support political stability, the incorporation of state ideological language into religious discourse, to the articulation of ethical criticism toward authoritarian practices. These patterns demonstrate that tafsir functions as a contested discursive arena where religious meaning is negotiated within structures of power. Theoretically, this article extends Gusmian’s typology by proposing a relational and hybrid perspective of political tafsir, highlighting that Qur’anic interpretation may simultaneously accommodate and critique power depending on the socio-political position of the exegete. This study contributes to contemporary Qur’anic studies by offering a conceptual framework for understanding tafsir as a dynamic practice shaped by ongoing negotiations between revelation, authority, and socio-political context in modern Muslim societies.
