Abstract

This research departs from the problem of low active participation of foreign learners in the interaction of Indonesian learning for Foreign Speakers (BIPA), especially those who are members of the Developing Countries Partnership (KNB) program. The verbal constraints they experience are not solely related to language skills, but also closely related to sociocultural, psychological, and pedagogical factors that affect their comfort in classroom interactions. This study aims to identify and describe the interaction obstacles faced by KNB foreign learners in BIPA learning and the factors that affect them as a whole. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques such as participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The research subjects consist of international students receiving KNB scholarships and participating in the BIPA program at one of the public universities in Indonesia. The data were analyzed thematically, emphasizing interaction patterns, verbal responses, and adaptation strategies used by learners in the learning context. The results show that the main obstacles in learning interactions come not only from the limitations of vocabulary and sentence structure, but also from the fear of making mistakes, lack of understanding of local communication norms, and lack of pedagogical support that is responsive to the learner's cultural background. These findings confirm the importance of developing BIPA learning strategies that are more inclusive, interactive, and based on intercultural awareness. This research provides theoretical and practical contributions to the development of BIPA teaching and opens up space for further studies in the realm of cross-cultural interaction in language education.

Abstract

Dangdut is one of Indonesia’s popular traditional music genres, rooted in Arabic, Malay, and Hindustani musical influences since the 1940s. Indonesia and South Korea share similarities in utilizing music for cultural promotion. Indonesia introduces its culture through dangdut music, while South Korea promotes its cultural identity through K-pop. K-pop is widely recognized among Indonesian youth, whereas dangdut remains relatively unknown in South Korea. Meanwhile, teaching Indonesian as a second language has developed significantly in South Korea, notably at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS). Introducing dangdut music in BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia for Foreign Speakers) instruction offers a strategic potential that can be compared to K-pop as an instructional medium. This study aims to (1) explore the characteristics of dangdut and K-Pop suitable as learning materials for BIPA in South Korea; and (2) describe the implementation of cultural diplomacy through dangdut music in the BIPA program. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method with a case study design. Primary data were obtained through observations, questionnaires, and interviews involving students, instructors, and program coordinators of BIPA at HUFS. Secondary data were collected from program documents and relevant literature. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive analysis model. The findings indicate that: (1) the communicative and contextual nature of dangdut is suitable for BIPA instructional materials, and K-Pop’s popularity is leveraged to attract learner interest; and (2) the use of dangdut music in BIPA instruction serves as a form of cultural diplomacy that strengthens intercultural relations. This study contributes to facilitating South Korean learners in acquiring the Indonesian language and ultimately enhancing the achievement of cultural diplomacy between the two countries.

Abstract

The low reading literacy competency among Indonesian youth has raised concerns, highlighting the need for literacy development programs within organizations such as Nasyiatul Aisyiyah (NA), the female youth organisation of Muhammadiyah. This study aims to profile the reading literacy competency of NA members in Bogor Regency and explore ways to enhance their literacy practices. Using a mixed-method approach, both quantitative and qualitative data were gathered. A survey was distributed to NA members, covering demographic data, reading habits, reading proficiency, and access to reading resources. Additionally, in-depth interviews with organizational leaders were conducted. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data from interviews were examined through thematic analysis. The findings reveal that although many NA members have proficient reading skills, barriers such as inconsistent reading habits and limited access to quality materials persist. The study concludes that targeted literacy training programs aligned with the principles of Islam Berkemajuan (Progressive Islam) are essential to improving literacy skills while fostering religious values. These programs could enhance literacy outcomes for NA members and contribute to broader literacy efforts in Indonesia, forming the basis for a new training model tailored to NA’s needs.

Abstract

Technology development in the digital era has transformed the world of literature, particularly for digital novels. The comment sections on digital literature provide a platform for direct interaction between authors and readers, which can influence the author's creative process. Therefore, this research aims to examine the author acceptance in responding to readers' feedback on their digital novels and to explore its impact on the creative process of the works produced. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method with a literary reception approach to understand readers' responses to three digital novels: "BarraKilla" by Nova Adhita, "Paradise Garden" by Khojina, and "Abi Ghea" by Chelsea Karina. Data were collected through documentation techniques and online observations of readers' comments, then it was analyzed using content analysis techniques and was validated through author interviews. The results of this study showed that readers' responses to digital novels are categorized into three aspects: domination, negotiation, and opposition. Dominant reception can support the plot and strengthen the narrative, while negotiation and opposition receptions can be considered in adjusting the story and evaluating it for the author. This study concludes that digital novel authors respond to readers' feedback through domination, negotiation, and opposition, where this interaction influences the story's development and creates a dynamic relationship between the author and the reader.

Abstract

This research discusses the hate speech delivered by the chairman of BEM UGM against President Joko Widodo, uploaded on social media. This research uses a forensic linguistic approach to examine the forms of hate speech by the BEM UGM chairman against President Joko Widodo. The urgency lies in understanding the impact of hate speech on social media to prevent conflicts and law violations. This research used a descriptive qualitative method with a data collection technique through the Listening-Taking Note method. Data were obtained from video transcriptions and social media posts containing the statement of the Chairman of BEM UGM. Furthermore, the data were analyzed by classifying it based on five forms of hate speech. The results show that there are five forms of hate speech delivered by the Chairman of BEM UGM against President Joko Widodo: (1) hate speech in the form of insults, such as calling the President a ‘Javanese Machiavelli’ and using derogatory words; (2) hate speech in the form of defamation, such as accusations of being a ‘ruler who destroys the democratic system’; (3) hate speech in the form of provocation, such as calls to fight the government; (4) hate speech in the form of spreading false news, such as the issue of a three-term presidency and accusations of nepotism; and (5) hate speech in the form of unpleasant actions, such as the installation of billboards calling the President ‘the most embarrassing UGM alumni’. The findings also show that these hate speeches are often not supported by factual evidence, so they are assumptions and slander. Thus, this research illustrates the importance of awareness in using social media wisely so as not to violate legal norms and communication ethics.

Abstract

Teaching materials play an essential role in improving the success of the learning process. Traditionally, teachers use teaching materials in learning, often textbooks, which are generally presented based on the author's thoughts and interpretations of the learning outcomes. Teachers have not widely used teaching materials developed as a person's literary activity process and have not  utilised technology as a scaffold for achieving activity skills. Likewise, when teaching poetry texts to high school students, teachers still have difficulty increasing their creativity in writing poetry by only utilizing teaching materials from available textbooks. This study aims to develop teaching materials for poetry texts for high school students that are developed based on the creative process of productive poets and presented using digital technology. The study began by conducting interviews with productive poets about the creative process of producing poetry, studying the needs of teaching materials for teachers, and analyzing learning outcomes. The next step is to prepare a design of teaching materials according to the stages of the creative process in writing poetry as a basis for development and presenting it in digital form. Teaching materials are validated through expert judgment, namely by language experts, literature experts, Indonesian language and literature learning experts, and learning technology experts. Furthermore, digital poetry text teaching materials were tested through classroom learning in eight meetings at Senior High School (SMA) and Madrasah Aliyah (MA). This study produced a digital poetry text teaching material model developed based on a creative process. The validation results stated that the digital poetry text teaching material model for SMA/MA was declared very valid based on the assessment components of material or content, presentation of material, language, and graphics. The trial of teaching materials in SMA and MA shows that digital poetry text teaching materials can improve students' creative abilities in writing poetry. In addition, students' activities are more responsive and enthusiastic in participating in learning. The results of this study can contribute to providing literary teaching materials that can improve students' creativity in writing poetry.

Abstract

The Baritan ceremony in Asemdoyong, Pemalang Regency, is a traditional ritual still maintained and preserved by the local community. In this ceremony, various food offerings are prepared as a form of honour and offering to the ancestors and the Creator. This study aims to analyse the ethnolinguistic meaning of food offerings in the Baritan ceremony and to understand how this tradition plays a role in maintaining the cultural identity of the Asemdoyong community. Data were obtained from observations and interviews with people who carry out the Baritan tradition. The results showed that the meaning contained in food offerings consisting of tumpeng, side dishes, vegetables, pala pendem, pala gantung, fruit, compote, and market snacks wrapped in leaves in the Baritan tradition ceremony in Asemdoyong, Pemalang Regency represents the hope for sustenance obtained from the surrounding nature, expressions of gratitude and requests for prosperity to God, and harmony of social relations through speech and action. Food offerings play a role in representing harmonious relationships between humans and others, God, and the natural environment. Islamic values dominate the meaning due to the influence of Islamic teachings adopted by the community. Thus, preserving this tradition is crucial to maintaining cultural identity and enriching Indonesia's cultural heritage.

Abstract

Language attitude refers to the behavior of speakers toward a language and its usage. There are differences in the language attitudes of Madurese speakers on Madura Island and those in Java. These differences arise from cultural contact among language speakers. This study aims to explore the language attitudes of Madurese speakers in Jember. Jember is a regency characterized by harmonious cultural interactions. Many residents in Jember are multilingual, speaking Indonesian and two regional languages: Javanese and Madurese. This research employs a phenomenological approach to capture the language attitudes of Madurese speakers in Jember as a representation of a multilingual society. The data were gathered through indicators of language attitudes using a questionnaire distributed via Google Forms. The respondents targeted were Madurese speakers with varied educational backgrounds, balanced in terms of gender. The questionnaire covered aspects such as comprehension, usage, preservation, and transmission of the Madurese language in their surroundings. The data were analyzed descriptively to identify the language attitudes of Madurese speakers. The analysis revealed both positive and negative attitudes. Positive attitudes were marked by comprehension, usage, preservation, and transmission of the Madurese language within families and local communities. Positive attitudes were evident in private and public settings, demonstrating pride in the language and its use. On the other hand, negative attitudes were also observed. These included partial pride in the Madurese language—speakers were willing to use the language but reluctant to preserve or pass it down to their children. Some speakers used the language but resisted being labeled as Madurese. The key finding of this study is the distinction between the language attitudes of Madurese speakers on Madura Island and those outside it. Madurese speakers on Madura Island are primarily monolingual or bilingual (Madurese and Indonesian). At the same time, those outside the island often belong to multilingual communities and display a complex sense of pride in multiple languages. Multilingual Madurese speakers often identify themselves as "Madura Swasta." They take pride in speaking Madurese but do not identify fully as Madurese. For "Madura Negeri," being Madurese means living on Madura Island and using the Madurese language exclusively. Those who live outside the island, even if fluent in Madurese, often have a dual attitude toward their regional language and the other languages they use.

Abstract

Sundanese society, as the second largest ethnic group in Indonesia, has distinctive proper names to distinguish itself from other ethnic communities. This study aims to describe the structure and function of proper names in Sundanese society. This research uses qualitative methods with theoretical onomastics, phonetics, and morphology approaches. Data in proper names was sourced from the YouTube channel Fiksi with the title “Sundanese Names mah Unik Pisan | Fiksi,” published on April 9, 2020. The data were collected by downloading and recording. The findings of this study consist of four main points. First, Sundanese proper names generally follow open syllable patterns, such as two syllables + 3 syllables and two + 4 syllables. Second, first names are a form of partial or complete repetition, either from the last name’s first, middle, or last syllable. Third, proper names tend to use high and low vowels. Fourth, proper names function as (1) identity markers, (2) easy-to-pronounce, and (3) easy-to-recall. In conclusion, proper names in the Sundanese community have unique structural patterns and functions, strengthening their role as cultural identity markers in Sundanese ethnic groups.
