Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates the representation of the phoneme [ŋ] in the onset position of Bahasa Indonesia (BI) and the factors influencing its changes among foreign speakers learning BI as a third language (L3). It employed a qualitative approach. Five BIPA students served as subjects. Their L1 and L2 typological proximity to BI was determined by language-family classification. Data were collected through elicitation and interviews, and analysis involved comparing the representation of the phoneme [ŋ] in subjects' speech with standard BI speech. Results show that the representation of the phoneme [ŋ] in the onset position by subjects whose L1 is typologically close to BI aligns with standard BI speech. This is attributed to their L1 having a similar phonological system to BI. Conversely, for foreign speakers whose L1 and L2 are typologically distant from BI, their phonological systems exhibit differences in speech compared to standard BI. In the speech of these subjects, the representation of [ŋ] in the onset position shows specific alterations. These include: 1) the epenthesis of [g] after [ŋ]; and 2) the shifting of [ŋ] from the onset to the coda of the preceding syllable, with the original onset position then being replaced by [g]. Two factors influence these changes: 1) the phonological systems of L1 and L2 lack [ŋ] in the onset position, though they permit it in medial and final positions; and 2) foreign speakers misinterpret the /ng/ form as a sequence of [n] and [g] ([n-g]), which leads to pronunciation errors.

Abstract

This study examines the use of figurative language and imagery in the song lyrics of Hindia’s album Lagipula Hidup Akan Berakhir through a stylistic approach. While previous studies on song lyrics tend to focus on isolated texts, they rarely explore how stylistic patterns operate systematically across a complete album as a unified textual entity. This study aims to identify types of figurative language, classify forms of imagery, and explain their stylistic functions in constructing existential meanings within the album. This research employed a qualitative descriptive design. The data consist of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences containing figurative language and imagery drawn from all songs in the album. Data were collected using listening and note-taking techniques and analyzed through an interactive model involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. A coding framework was used to systematically categorize figurative devices and imagery types. The findings reveal that comparative figures of speech, particularly metaphor, simile, and personification, are the most dominant forms. These expressions function as conceptual tools to represent abstract experiences such as loss, anxiety, and mortality. Oppositional figures, including irony, paradox, and hyperbole, help convey emotional tension and social critique. In terms of imagery, visual imagery is the most dominant type, indicating a strong reliance on visual representation to construct meaning and enhance imaginative engagement. This study contributes to stylistic studies by demonstrating that song lyrics within a single album exhibit consistent, systematic stylistic patterns that function cohesively to construct existential themes.

Abstract

The complex cultural and linguistic competencies essential for Indonesian language education highlight the need for instructional models that enhance student engagement and conceptual understanding. Conventional textbook-based instruction often fails to address these needs, particularly for at-risk learners who struggle with abstract reasoning and cultural interpretation. This study examines the effectiveness of integrating decision-aid science into game-based interactive textbooks to improve student engagement and conceptual mastery. Employing a quasi-experimental mixed-methods design, this research involved 70 high school students divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group used an interactive digital textbook embedded with decision-oriented simulations and real-time feedback, while the control group received traditional instruction. Quantitative results show that students in the experimental group demonstrated significantly greater gains in conceptual understanding, especially among moderate- and high-risk learners (p < .001), whereas the control group exhibited negligible improvement. Qualitative findings further indicate that decision-based simulations fostered meaningful engagement, enhanced the clarity of abstract concepts, and reduced performance pressure. The novelty of this study lies in demonstrating how decision-aid science—typically applied in cognitive and behavioral research—can be operationalized within digital language learning environments to scaffold reasoning, strengthen motivation, and create low-stress learning conditions.

Abstract

This study examines the use of satire in Eko Kuntadhi’s Instagram posts within the context of digital political discourse. While previous studies have explored satire in mass media and television, limited attention has been given to satire produced by public figures on social media platforms. This study aims to identify types of satire and analyze their communicative functions using a critical discourse approach. This research employs a qualitative method with discourse analysis. The data consist of 58 satirical statements collected through documentation techniques from Instagram posts. The analysis is based on Abrams and Harpham's classification of satire, combined with critical discourse perspectives, to examine meaning, ideology, and power relations. The findings show that Horatian satire dominates (51.7%), followed by Juvenalian (31%) and Menippean (17.2%). Horatian satire uses humor to persuade, Juvenalian satire expresses moral criticism, and Menippean satire critiques ideological patterns. The study reveals that satire operates not only as a stylistic device but also as a discursive tool that reflects ideological positioning and power relations in digital political communication. This study contributes to linguistic and discourse studies by demonstrating that satire in social media functions as a strategic mechanism for negotiating meaning, ideology, and audience engagement in digital public discourse.
