Abstract

Translation is crucial in facilitating cross-cultural understanding, especially in educational and touristic contexts such as museums. In this context, the accurate and acceptable translation of geographic terms is essential to ensure that information remains clear, informative, and culturally relevant for diverse audiences. This study aims to identify various types of geography terms found on the information board at the Batur Volcano Museum, also known as the Geopark Batur Museum. In addition, this study analyzes the most dominant types of terms and their relevance to the museum. The research data was taken from the bilingual informational board with geographic terms in the Geopark Batur Museum. The qualitative method explains the types of geography terms found on the information boards. This analysis is based on the theory of landscape linguistics by Yendra and Artawa (2020) and integrates geography theory, including the theory of geography types by Sinartejo (2019). The results showed five geography terms on the information board: atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and anthroposphere, with lithosphere as the most dominant type. This is because the museum aims to educate visitors about the geological phenomena that shape the landscape of Batur and its surroundings, so information about the lithosphere is very prominent on the information board. The geographic term lithosphere type refers to information about the rock and soil formations in the region, which are the main attraction for visitors who want to understand the geological uniqueness of Batur. The term lithosphere is therefore very relevant as it covers basic knowledge of the Earth's structure, which is important to understand in geography and geology.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the social context in video uploads on social media accounts (YouTube and Instagram) regarding the case of Gus Miftah and the Iced Tea Seller and to apply the theory of power to strengthen the social context. The primary focus of this research is to identify and explain how the uploads will be interpreted in terms of constructs and interpretations studied in cyberpragmatics. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative analysis by examining eight uploads from YouTube and Instagram in December 2024. The results showed that the uploads that appear in the 8 data besides showing the meaning of the construct and the meaning of interpretation as a cyberpragmatic study, which relates to the power relation of power consisting of reward power, expert power, estimated power, referent power, and coercive power as a measuring material for the existence of power in the social context. These findings enrich the study of pragmatics, especially cyberpragmatics in Indonesia, and provide insight into language studies on social media and other fields of science that support each other.

Abstract

Citizens who voice criticism of government policies often face criminalization, eroding expressive spaces, and democratic freedoms. This study examines a systematic repressive apparatus enforced through legal instruments. Beyond mere coercive action, it explores how biased language within legislation constructs narratives that legitimize repressive measures. Utilizing the AntConc corpus tool and a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach, this research analyzes the discourse embedded in the Electronic Information and Transactions Law (ITE Law), the Indonesian Criminal Code (KUHP), the Law on Mass Organizations (UU Ormas), and Government Regulation No. 26 of 2020. The findings reveal that the state constructs a system of negative labeling, framing expressions of dissent as threats to national stability through terms such as “public order disruptor,” “threat to state officials,” “freedom usurper,” and “communism propagator.” These terms function not only as juridical categories, but also as ideological labels that criminalize dissent. Legal language in these documents is applied selectively to reinforce negative perceptions of critics and plays a role in perpetuating structural violence. Therefore, this study emphasizes the urgent need for a critical audit of legal language to eliminate ambiguous and biased terminology.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of Malay women in Syair Putri Akal using Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutic approach to strengthen the cultural identity of women that are often marginalized in historical narratives and classical literature. The background of this study is based on the importance of representing portraits of women in classical literary texts to understand the cultural roles they once held. This study aims to examine the representation of Malay women from their physical, character, and psychological images through an interpretive approach. The method used is qualitative with Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutic theory, which includes the stages of distanciation, interpretation, and appropriation, to explore the poem's symbolic meaning. The results show that the character of Putri Akal is represented as a physically beautiful woman, has intelligence and wisdom in character, and is ethereal and gentle psychologically. The symbolization of beauty and reason in the character of Malay women shows the idealism of Malay culture towards women. In conclusion, Syair Putri Akal places women as objects and as active subjects in social and cultural processes. Hence, building a more equal narrative of women's identity is relevant.

Abstract

Digital learning transformation has created significant opportunities for developing instructional media that support students’ metacognitive abilities, particularly in the Indonesian Language Education Study Program. This study aims to identify students’ preferences of digital learning media and their impact on learning habits and comprehension gaps. This research employed a mixed-method approach with a sequential explanatory design, involving 123 Indonesian Language Education students from various semesters. Data were collected through quantitative surveys and In-Depth Interviews (IDI) to gain deeper insights. The results revealed that most students preferred digital media (77.24%) over conventional media (22.76%). Visual learning styles dominated (36.59%), with video platforms being the most favoured (32.52%). Correlation analysis showed a significant relationship between the frequency of digital media use and the reduction of comprehension gaps (r = 0.181; p = 0.046), although it was not significant for learning habits. The result of IDI highlights the need for collaborative features, gamification, better journal access, and more relevant support for Indonesian language learning. Data triangulation confirmed that digital media preferences contribute to reducing comprehension gaps, although they do not fully influence learning habits. This study recommends developing interactive and contextual digital learning media by integrating features that support active, collaborative, and based on local culture to strengthen students’ understanding in Indonesian language courses.

Abstract

The silencing of critical voices has evolved from physical repression during the New Order era to the sophisticated mechanisms of digital suppression in contemporary Indonesia. This study aims to reveal the continuity and transformation of silencing practices by analyzing Leila S. Chudori’s novel Laut Bercerita alongside present-day digital suppression phenomena through Antonio Gramsci’s theory of hegemony. Employing a qualitative approach, the research integrated content analysis of the novel and documentation of digital silencing cases collected through literature reviews, close reading, and interactive data analysis methods, involving iterative coding, theme development, and validation across multiple data sources. The findings revealed that Laut Bercerita portrays silencing through coercion and ideological manipulation by the New Order regime, reflected in acts of torture, enforced disappearances, and propaganda. These practices exhibited fundamental similarities to modern digital suppression tactics, such as algorithm manipulation, shadow banning, and doxxing. Viewed through Gramsci's theoretical lens, both eras demonstrated the interplay of coercive force and ideological control to maintain hegemony. The study concludes that despite medium shifts, the silencing mechanisms persist across time. It further recommends the development of counter-hegemonic strategies. Specifically, creating alternative narratives and independent digital spaces that challenge dominant power structures to resist the increasingly complex nature of digital repression.

Abstract

In academic writing, cohesion is vital in ensuring clarity and facilitating reader comprehension, particularly in concise research abstracts that summarize key findings. This research aims to identify the types of cohesive devices and explain the use of cohesive devices in abstracts. The object of the research was 21 abstract journals. Data were collected through documentation and analyzed using qualitative content analysis as proposed by Mayring (2014). The analysis involved categorization, abstraction, and coding of the text. The results showed that there were 1113 exemplary of cohesive devices. In addition to that, collocation was the most frequently used device, appearing in 430 instances, then reiteration in 269 instances, references in 291 instances, suggesting a firm reliance on these for coherence. Conjunctions were also extensively used, with 117 instances, while ellipsis appeared only four instances as nominal ellipsis. The substitution was noted just twice, including both nominal and verbal forms. The research concludes that collocations and reiteration significantly enhance the clarity and flow of academic writing, with conjunctions aiding logical progression. The limited role of substitution and ellipsis highlights their specific, less frequent applications in maintaining textual cohesion and coherence. This analysis underscores the importance of various cohesive devices in effectively conveying research findings and ensuring reader comprehension of academic abstracts.

Abstract

Child violence often arises as a consequence of uncontrolled academic rivalry, driven by mimetic desire. This study aims to analyse the depiction of child violence in Merindu Baginda Nabi by Habiburrahman El Shirazy through the lens of René Girard’s theory of mimetic desire. Employing a qualitative research methodology with a descriptive-interpretative approach, this study examines words, phrases, and excerpts from the novel that represent child violence. Data collection was conducted through library research, while content analysis was carried out using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion-drawing techniques. The findings of this study reveal that child violence in Merindu Baginda Nabi by Habiburrahman El Shirazy stems from mimetic desire, with the character Rifa positioned as the subject and Arum as the mediator. This dynamic escalates into rivalry and ultimately results in violence. However, the narrative demonstrates that such violence can be resolved through reconciliation and self-reflection. Accordingly, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of child violence in educational settings by applying literary analysis through Girard’s mimetic theory. The use of Girardian theory offers a novel perspective on the root causes of child violence in education. It contributes significantly to literary criticism and the broader discourse on conflict resolution through literature.

Abstract

This study examines grammar learning strategies used by the English Language Education Study Program students in Aceh Province. The main problem raised is the difficulties students face in applying the grammar learned to daily communication. This study aims to explore the strategies applied in grammar learning and the factors that affect the effectiveness of these strategies in Aceh. The method used in this study is a qualitative approach with data collection techniques through interviews, observations, and documentation. Data was obtained from students and lecturers in the English Education Study Program at several universities in Aceh. The study results show that although various grammar learning strategies have been implemented, students still find connecting theory with language practice in daily life challenging. These findings reveal the importance of teaching grammar that is more contextual and focuses on real communication practices. This research contributes to the development of grammar learning theory and practice and provides recommendations for teaching that are more applicable and relevant to students' local needs. However, this study also has limitations, especially regarding sample coverage limited to one province, which can be used as an opportunity for further research by expanding the region's scope and data collection techniques.
