Abstract

Palembang is a river city that its land is dominated by lowland. In its initial development, the settlement was built based on adaptation to the nature of lowland area such as riverbanks and marsh. Along with the increasing population, the settlements including housing area has spread from landed to lowland area. Many housing areas are developed on the reclaimed low lying land. The problem has arisen when the flood happened in this housing area. The flood has affected residents’ well-being and image of housing area as elite estate. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the preference of residents on the environment of housing on the reclaimed lowland area. To achieve this aim, the study examines the change of preference of residents on three aspects; housing attributes, renovation and infrastructure quality. The study used quantitative method. Data were collected by survey questionaire from 150 residents. Data were analyzed by using factor analysis. The results show that there is a change ofresident preference from housing attributes to the environmental aspects, particularly the quality of drainage system and the availability of water catchment area. This change appears after the flood happened recently in their housing area as an impact of the reclaimation. Study concludes that the water management system is the aspect for controlling the inevitable city development at lowland area.

Abstract

Settlements in the Dieng Mountains is a manifestation of the culture of Dieng society. On a micro scale, bagenen connected by botolan is a settlement element that is always present in the Dieng community house. Bagenen-botolan becomes the main container of social, cultural and economic activity. When the settlements develop, the community then uses latar ombo for social, cultural, economic and sport activities that cannot be done in Bagenen-botolan. Between latar ombo one with the other is always connected by jalan latar and jalan tritian. This phenomenon raises the notion that, in the village scale, latar ombo that connected jalan latar and jalan tritian became a kind of bagenen-botolan. The notion is further strengthened by the existence of a village field that is always connected by jalan terabasan. Research questions that are then proposed are; what is the concept underlies the formation of settlements in the Dieng Mountains. The results of grandtour and minitour found 8 (eight) themes, namely, 1) The kinship system as a village builders, 2) Bagenen as a multifunctional space, 3) Latar ombo as bagenen in village scale, 4) Field as multifunctional space on the scale between villages, 5) Bagenen connected botolan 6) Latar ombo connected by jalan latar and jalan tritian, 7) The mosque connected by jalan latar and jalan tritian, 8) The field connected by jalan terabasan on the scale between villages.Inductive analysis of the eight themes found three concepts underlying the formation of settlements in the Dieng Mountains, namely: 1) Connected concepts, 2) Nyepetno concept, and 3) Brayan concept. The concept is empirically seen on all space scales. Layout arrangement of physical elements of settlement in Dieng Mountains always refers to this concept. These findings are a significant contribution for the science of architecture especially related to the spatial and values that form the Mountains settlements.

Abstract

A riverbank wetland has an important ecosystem service, so that should be a city conservation area. The settlements on wetland riverbanks would decrease the ecosystem services. But for some cities, it is difficult to avoid. To reduce the damage to the ecosystem services, it is necessary to identify the ideal development according to the ecosystem approach. This study identifies the gap between the factual house type and the ideal type according to the ecosystem approach. The factual home types were identified through field observations, whereas the types of recommendations were identified based on an assessment of the experts. The results indicated that there was a gap of the house types between the factual and the recommendations. Therefore, the planning should adjust the house types between the factual and the recommendation of the ecosystem approach. The settlement planning that equilibrates the community needs and the sustainability of ecosystem services.

Abstract

Kampung batik of Tanjung Bumi has the uniqueness from the craft of batik gentongan and traditional settlement of tanean lanjang. Batik activities that originally as a filler of spare time, is currently done to earn income. The changes of paradigm is expected to have an impact on changing the pattern of arragement of tanean lanjang. The research was descriptive with qualitative method which was done on 6 (six) groups of tanean lanjang. The changes in the paradigm of society do not show much change in the pattern of arragement of tanean lanjang in the kampung batik of Tanjung Bumi. The tanean lanjang (the long of yard); fence; location, orientation, hierarchy, and shape of the Langgar; and the porch of houses are the elements that are preserved. The function of the Langgar becomes less. The spaces in the houses are private whereas the porch of the houses has changed on its character from semi-privat become semi-public. The changes happened on its pattern, total, and the function of the residential space which more complex. It is also much more influenced by development of life of social than the development of batik activities. The pattern of tanean lanjang can be a place of the develpment of batik activities. The traditional settlement of tanean lanjang is still suitable with the meaning the way of life today.

Abstract

The Indonesian archipelago has typical traditional dwelling richness on every island. In island city, Bawean, the wind effect becomes very critical to the identification of environmental adaptation of its dwelling. The aim of this study was to identify the adaptation characteristics of traditional dwelling to the environmental archipelago condition of Bawean island. In this study, two main dwellings as references are the traditional houses, Bangsal or Limas and Barn, Durung. Generally, this research involves two major steps as follows: (1) Identification and specification phase (field observations, measurements) of the characteristics of building performance, (2) Simulation phase of the thermal performance of traditional house (using Ecotect Analysis and CFD Programs). This results highlighted that the houses performance is not optimum, both in spreads and compact orders. Meanwhile, Durung has better performance, only 17% of the samples are in discomfort condition (spread or compact). The optimum condition is achieved when the settlement spread out, otherwise uncomfortable when it is in the dense environment. The houses in daytime conditions are in the discomfort conditions and lower cooling load, while the night-time conditions are in the quadrant of optimum conditions, comfort, and low cooling load.
