Abstract

This research attempted to identify and analyze the Cebuano-Bisaya radio health commercials using Schegloff’s (2007) framework on pre-sequences with the support of Yule’s (1996) speech act theory. Thirty (30) Cebuano-Bisaya radio health commercials were gathered from two selected radio stations. The results revealed that representatives were the most dominant function in speech acts that reflected in pre-sequences specifically with pre-offers and pre-announcements through  drama  and  testimonial  categories  which  are  often  used  in  medicinal product  commercials.  In  advertising  strategies,  Cebuano-Bisaya  commercials use  Representatives  and  Expressive  as  persuasive  devices  in  addressing  the advertisers’ intended  message  to  the  target  audience.  Also,  Cebuano-Bisaya commercials used Representatives and Expressive as an appeal to suggest an intention for the listener to buy advertised products. Keywords: Cebuano, commercial, health, pre-sequences, radio, speech acts

Abstract

This paper describes Indonesian university student’s willingness to actively engage in English language learning and their self-reported anxiety levels. The objectives of this study are to describe the willingness of Indonesian students to communicate in English, and to explain the relationship between anxiety and willingness to communicate in English. The participants of this study are 426 students of Bachelor’s Degree in Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta (UMS). The instruments used to gather data are questionnaire and interview. Quantitative data is analized using regression analysis (ANAREG) and qualitative data is analyzed using descriptive analysis. The results of the study show that their willingness to communicate in English is very low (scored 14.21 on WTC scale) while their anxiety is at moderate level (scored 39.66 on FLCAS scale). Only half of the students (51%) have low willingness to communicate in English. More than half (68%) of students indicate that their language anxiety influences their willingness to communicate in English, while 12% of them does not show that their anxiety influence their linguistic behavior. Abstract

The main aim of this writing is to formulate the theory of universal grammar. The formulation made is taken form discussion on a close look at the universal grammar which of summary proposed by Greenberg and Hawkins. The items being searched are not about elements such as subject, predicate, object respectively in sentence, but the categories of words for example (N) (V) in forming a simple sentence.the result of discussing universal grammar shows that (1) Chomsky's model universal grammar; (2) Greenberg's model of universal grammar devides languages in the world into three types of universal world order (universal phrase sequence) = Verb + Subject + Object (VSO), Subject + Verb + Object (SVO), and Subject + Object + Verb (SOV); (3) Hawkins's model of universal grammar states that based on word order, language the world can be formulated into 24 types. Moreover, such types consist of groups of subtype and category V, S and O which are usually used to classify the types based on proposition and postposition, (4) the continued universal grammar states a different coocurence sequence, which reveals comparison-base which is not S, V, O, but category such as S, V, N, N. The first N is subject, the second one is indirect object, and the third N is direct object. In this case it is clear that S or O is represented by N; (5) when there is sequence NNN uninserted by V, a mark is needed to show which N as subject, device or indirect object. The mark can be seen as in rowd order N before V is subject, or N after V indirect object, while the second after V is direct object. If the states of N-N changes, there must be a certain postverb (postposition) to indicate the indirect object; (6) the adposition of language with a pattern VSO or SVO is preposition, while in the language SOV, the adposition is postposition.Key words: universal grammar, tipology, natural languages, and word order.

Abstract

The present study is concerned with mixed languages in the speech of a bilin- gual child, in Indonesian and Javanese. It is a cross-sectional study. The data of this study are in the form of sentences containing mixed languages. There are 50 sentences used as the data that are collected through observation and note taking. The collected data are then analyzed using descriptive method. The data analysis has revealed that the child’s speech does contain elements from both languages: Indonesian and Javanese. The language mixing occurs at mostly all linguistic lev- els. The syntax, the morphology, and lexicon are formed or taken from both lan- guages. The analysis also reveals that the child is still at the initial level of a bilin- gual. He has one lexical system with words from both languages. He also uses a mixed syntactical system. Both are evidence that he is a simultaneous bilingual, a bilingual from the start. Such language mixing is so common among normal bilinguals. A child who grows up simultaneously learning two or more languages usually goes through such a phase. This also makes possible that the child has been exposed to a mixed language input. Key Words: Bilingual children, language mixing, mixed languages.

Abstract

This study describes prosodic features which marked the emphatic meaning in Indonesian from Indonesian speaker whose mother tongue is, for instance, Javanese, Sundanese, Betawi, Bataknese, Bugisnese, Minangnese, Ma’anyanese, Balinese, and Mandailing. This study is conducted by applying experimental phonetic approach that is by selecting imperative sentences Tutup pintu! ‘Close the door!’ as a target sentence. The data are collected by asking a subject to commend and to repeat the same command to a child or someone who is of the same age of his child to close the door. All collected data are measured in terms of its frequency, intensity, and duration. Those three features are then analyzed statistically to find out the significance differences of acoustic feature difference on every level of utterance emphaticity. The results of this study shows that frequency, intensity, and duration are significant markers which differentiate emphaticity level. In terms of frequency, the higher the emphaticity level ofthe utterance is, the higher the frequency of the base pitch, final pitch, and pitch range of that utterance will be. From the sound intensity point of view, the emphaticity of utterance is marked by base intensity and intensity range. The utterance with high emphaticity level is marked by high base intensity and wider range intensity. From duration point of view, the utterance emphaticity is marked by the duration of all vowels. The height of emphaticity level is marked by the length of time needed by the vowels to be uttered. The emphaticity markers show meaningful correlation. Keywords: acoustic phonetics; experimental phonetics; speech perception; andprosodie feature
