Abstract

KH. Abdullah Syafi'i (1910–1985) was a central Betawi scholar whose influence on Islamic education and urban da'wah in Jakarta remains understudied, particularly in relation to how his institutions navigated the intersection of pesantren traditions and educational modernization. Previous scholarship has largely focused on his biography or community activism, leaving a gap in explaining the structural transformation of Betawi-based Islamic schools and their contribution to the development of urban pesantren in Indonesia. This study addresses that gap by analyzingAbdullah Syafi'i’s educational initiatives, socio-religious leadership, and da'wah strategies within the broader evolution of modern Indonesian Islamic education. Employing a qualitative historical-sociological approach, the study draws on archival documents, institutional records, and selective interviews to trace the development of the As-Syafi'iyah educational network. The findings reveal that Abdullah Syafi'i introduced an integrated religious–general curriculum, strengthened mass da'wah through organized majelis taklim, utilized radio as a pioneering medium for Islamic outreach, and established orphan-based boarding schools as a model of urban social empowerment. The study argues that Abdullah Syafi'i represents a distinctive model of urban ulama who simultaneously preserved tradition and advanced modernization. His contributions expand the scholarly understanding of Indonesian Islamic education, offering an urban-based perspective on pesantren reform that challenges dominant rural and Java-centric frameworks.

Abstract

This study aims to examine Ibn Khaldun's concept of malakah in relation to the philosophy of deep learning based on the principles of mindful, meaningful, and joyful learning. The study is motivated by the need for an educational approach that emphasizes depth of understanding, critical reflection, and character building. Using comparative literature review method, this study draws primarily on the Muqaddimah as it main source and analyze it through systematic comparison with contemporary deep learning framework. Data were analyzed using content analysis techniques involving stages of data reduction, theme categorization, and comparative interpretation. The results of the study indicate a strong conceptual convergence between malakah and deep learning, especially in the process of internalizing knowledge through sustained practice, guided repetition, and reflective dialogue. This study contributes by proposing malakah-Deep Learning Integration, a synthetic framework that maps the integration of cognitive, affective, and psychomotor, and connects the spiritual-moral dimensions of malakah with the development of 21st-century competencies associated with deep learning. This framework provides a philosophical-pedagogical foundation of more holistic and contextually grounded model of Islamic education. This study recommends further empirical studies to examine the practical effectiveness of this conceptual framework in educational settings.

Abstract

This study explores the transformative construction of social spirituality within the Santri Gobal Gabul community, a community-based religious movement affiliated with Pondok Pesantren Al-Muhammad Cepu. Drawing upon Ibn Khaldun’s Sociology of Education, it examines how the hidden curriculum of the Pengajian Malam Ahad (Saturday Night Recitation) functions as a form of non-formal education that transcends conventional pedagogical frameworks. The research focuses on three key dimensions: (1) reconstructing social spirituality through Ibn Khaldun’s concept of ‘ilm al-‘umran al-insani and the development of al-malakah (internalized moral competence); (2) identifying the mechanisms of the hidden curriculum that organically foster tolerance, empathy, and interfaith inclusivity; and (3) formulating a character education model grounded in social spirituality within the pesantren tradition. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach with a phenomenological lens, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation, then validated through triangulation. The findings reveal that social spirituality is cultivated through ashabiyah khairiyyah (virtue-based social cohesion) emerging naturally within the hidden curriculum. Through moral exemplarity, reflective dialogue, and cross-cultural engagement, Pengajian Malam Ahad serves as a socio-spiritual laboratory (al-‘umran) that transforms individual piety into collective social consciousness.

Abstract

Digital technology advancements have brought changes in the behavior and personality of school aged students. Especially in the use of gadgets, which tend to impact decreased learning motivation, concentration, and learning responsibility. However, in an international school, gadget use has become a directed learning tool through the integration of Islamic values and the Montessori approach. This study focuses on the development of student independence and discipline in gadget use at Brainy Bunch Cyberjaya, Malaysia. The data obtained through observation and interviews show that the development of student character at Brainy Bunch Cyberjaya Malaysia is carried out through habit formation, reinforcement of Islamic values, and management of gadget usage time, with consistent supervision from teachers. The findings of this study is parental involvement at home plays an important role in reinforcing the positive habits developed at school, thereby creating continuity between education at school and the family environment. This study has limitations as it was conducted in one school with a specific context, so the results cannot be generalized to all educational institutions.
