Abstract

The development of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in students at Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) is crucial due to their numerous advantages, such as the capacity to tackle social, scientific, and practical problems with effectiveness. Whether or not Pondok Modern Tazakka successfully integrated the use of HOTS questions in exams is the goal of this study. Through the application of descriptive phenomenological research methods and data collection techniques, including the tabulation of 132 test sheets in 44 subjects tested on KMI Class 6 students and interviews with 62 teachers in 8 subjects, it was discovered that 8 subjects exhibited no HOTS questions at all (19%), 6 subjects exhibited a decreasing number of HOTS questions (14%), 19 subjects exhibited a sharp increase in HOTS questions (45%), and 9 subjects exhibited a constant number of HOTS questions. The study's findings also demonstrate that, as long as supervisors (senior teachers) take a more proactive approach to giving junior teachers comprehensive training and ensure that all exam questions in each subject are HOTS exam questions, it is possible to guarantee that all exam questions will contain HOTS.

Abstract

This study explores the integration of e-learning media in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) at SDN Somoitan from a neuroscience perspective. A qualitative case study approach was employed, involving in-depth interviews, classroom observations and supporting documents. Data analysis was conducted using a descriptive approach to illustrate the impact of e-learning on students' cognitive functions, particularly in the context of neuroplasticity, attention, and memory retention. The findings reveal that e-learning media incorporating visual and auditory elements positively impacts student participation. The use of videos, animations, and interactive quizzes helps students better understand the material, aligning with neuroplasticity principles that demonstrate the brain's ability to adapt through diverse learning experiences. However, the study also identifies challenges in implementing e-learning, including technological infrastructure limitations, such as unstable internet connections, and teachers' competency in integrating technology into the learning process. Despite these challenges, the school has made efforts to improve infrastructure and provide training to teachers to enhance their technical skills. This study offers valuable insights into how e-learning media can be optimized to improve student learning outcomes and provides strategic recommendations to address existing barriers. The study concludes that, despite the challenges, the effective implementation of e-learning media can have a significantly positive impact on the quality of education at SDN Somoitan.

Abstract

A contextual Arabic textbook was compiled as a religious moderation program in UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim, Indonesia. The moderation program was initiated by the Ministry of Religious Affairs. A textbook showing Indonesian culture was developed to differentiate Arabic textbooks from other countries, such as Germany and Saudi Arabia. The textbook contains four distinct indicators.  This study explores the concordance and collocation of four indicators of religious moderation in Arabiyah Lil Hayah (ALH). It also investigated students’ perceptions of the four indicators. Employing corpus-based critical discourse analysis, this study collected a corpus from the ALH book on student perceptions in txt form. This study identified that the indicator of National Commitment is present in several contexts, such as August 17, Islamic organizations, and elections. The Tolerance indicator is represented by the different opinions of the four madzhabs and the motto of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika. The teaching of non-violence was described in the Hajar Aswad incident in Makkah. Local culture was introduced in the context of culture, ethnicity, and traditional food. Students use a variety of sentences to express their perceptions, including cause-and-effect, supposition, and rhetorical forms. When the discourse is personally relevant, pronouns are used to reflect this connection, with their expression of identity often aligned with their social community or gender, such as affiliations with NU (Nahdlatul Ulama) or their identity as women.

Abstract

This study explored teacher management strategies for enhancing the competence of Hafizh Al-Qur'an in the digital era. This qualitative descriptive study collected data through interviews, observations, and documentation. The data were validated using triangulation techniques, including data triangulation, investigator triangulation, theory triangulation, and methodological triangulation. The findings of this study indicate an increase in the competence of Hafizh Al-Qur'an including higher motivation, improved reading and memorization quality, increased consistency and discipline, and deeper understanding and practice of the Al-Qur'an. This improvement is attributed to effective management practices through the Planning-Organizing-Actuating-Controlling approach. Planning includes identifying training needs, setting strategic goals, and planning digital technologies. Organizing includes resource allocation, team building, and the provision of facilities. Actuating includes teacher training, implementation of the Tahfizh method, and use of the online platform. Control includes periodic evaluation, feedback, and obstacle fixing. This study offers a foundation for future research to explore potential challenges and mitigation strategies for the potential negative impacts of using technology in learning and memorizing the Qur'an.

Abstract

This study explores the management of non-formal Islamic educational institutions in fostering a Qur’anic generation with strong faith and noble character. Employing a qualitative research approach, the study examines the distinctive educational strategies implemented by various institutions. Specifically, it analyzes the integration of Qur’anic memorization (tahfidz) and entrepreneurship at Rumah Tahfidz An-Nahl, the structured memorization system at Rumah Tahfidz Dar Aisyah, and the combination of skill-based training and Arabic language instruction at LPK Jamilurrahman. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, direct observations, and document analysis. The collected data were then analyzed descriptively to gain insights into the management approaches and challenges faced by these institutions. The findings indicate that the primary challenges include limitations in the availability of qualified educators, inadequate infrastructure, and difficulties in managing student engagement. Each institution employs unique strategies to address these issues, such as involving alumni in teaching roles and implementing supervision systems to maintain discipline and learning quality. Despite these challenges, the study reveals that the unwavering commitment of these institutions to delivering high-quality education rooted in Islamic values remains their core strength. These findings highlight the critical role of non-formal Islamic education in providing relevant and beneficial learning opportunities, contributing significantly to the development of morally upright and competent individuals.

Abstract

Initially, waqf in Indonesia was managed individually without clear regulations. Over time, the need to regulate waqf management emerged to ensure its effective administration and targeted utilization. One significant effort in this regard is leveraging waqf to support the development and empowerment of educational quality, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of Quality Education. Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) play a crucial role in realizing this objective. This study adopts a qualitative approach through literature analysis and library research, utilizing data from books, academic journals, and relevant documents. Through a comprehensive literature review, this research examines the role of waqf and its implications for enhancing educational quality. The findings indicate that waqf has a significant impact on the development of quality education, particularly within pesantren. The utilization of waqf in these educational institutions not only provides financial support for infrastructure and facilities but also fosters the development of educational programs, scholarships, and teacher training, which enhance the overall quality of education. Furthermore, waqf in pesantren contributes to the empowerment of local communities by providing accessible and affordable education. The implications of these findings suggest that the integration of waqf into educational systems can be a sustainable and effective means to improve educational outcomes and help achieve SDG 4. Therefore, policymakers and educational stakeholders should consider strengthening waqf management frameworks to maximize its potential in supporting quality education, particularly in underserved regions.

Abstract

This study investigates the operationalization of eco-theology in Islamic education and its effects on students’ environmental awareness and behavior. Anchored in the Qur’anic principles of khilāfah (vicegerency), amānah (trusteeship), and mizān (balance), the research employs a qualitative case-study design across three Islamic elementary schools in Demak that have instituted eco-theology–based programs. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom and schoolyard observations, and document analysis. The analytic procedure involved iterative reduction, categorical coding, and interpretive synthesis, followed by source triangulation to enhance credibility. The findings show that integrating eco-theology into the curriculum substantially strengthens students’ understanding of the connection between Islamic teachings and ecological responsibility while fostering tangible pro-environmental practices, including reforestation activities, structured waste management, and prudent energy use. Experiential learning and consistent teacher modeling emerged as decisive drivers of students’ ecological conduct. Nonetheless, implementation is constrained by limited instructional materials, uneven teacher training, and the absence of systematic, school-wide eco-theological policies. Policy implications indicate the need for comprehensive eco-theology curricula, sustained professional development for teachers, and governance frameworks that institutionalize environmental stewardship. Schools should formalize supportive policies and cultivate partnerships among educational institutions, academics, and environmental organizations to build a more sustainable and integrated learning ecosystem.

Abstract

The implementation of School-Based Management (SBM) in educational institutions is expected to be carried out in accordance with established regulations. However, in practice, it often falls short of expectations. Common problems include limited budgets, inadequate facilities and infrastructure, low-quality human resources, and insufficient integration of educational technology. This study specifically aims to analyze the challenges of educational autonomy within the framework of SBM. A qualitative approach with a descriptive survey method was employed. The research was conducted at SMP Negeri 3 Muara Batu, with data collected through interviews and observations. The informants consisted of the school principal and several individuals directly involved in managing SBM. Interviews were conducted online via the WhatsApp application to adapt to field conditions, while observations were carried out at the school to examine both the implementation process and the progress achieved after adopting SBM. The findings indicate that the school has implemented programs designed to improve institutional quality. Through the application of SBM, the school strives to become more effective by exercising educational autonomy. Moreover, the study highlights that an effective school must incorporate efficient elements to enhance not only the institution’s overall quality but also the professional competence of teachers.

Abstract

The phenomenon of secularism has created an educational space that is often detached from spiritual and religious values. For Muslim communities, particularly the younger generation growing up in Western educational systems, this has given rise to a complex identity crisis. This article aims to examine the influence of secularism on the formation of Muslim identity in Western educational environments. Employing qualitative, library-based research, this research engages critically academic literatures, seminal texts, and the works of modern Muslim thinkers. The results show that secularism not only impacts the marginalization of Islamic values in the curricula but also affects the identity formation experienced by Muslim students in their search for identity. Islamic education in the West is required not only to be a space for the transmission of religious knowledge but also to become a space for the formation of a strong religious identity. The novelty of this research lies in its exploration of Muslim identity formation in the West within the prism of contemporary Islamic discourse, thereby offering new perspectives in understanding the dynamics of the Muslim identity crisis and contextual educational strategies amidst the currents of global secularism.

Abstract

The transformation of Islamic Religious Education (IRE) in higher education has become an urgent need to face the challenges of the digital era characterized by rapid technological advancement, globalization, and value disruption. This study aims to analyze the forms, challenges, and implementation strategies of IRE transformation in universities. Using a qualitative descriptive method through a library research approach, this study finds that IRE transformation involves three main dimensions: (1) innovation in technology-based teaching methods, (2) curriculum renewal emphasizing competency and character development, and (3) enhancement of digital literacy among lecturers and students. The integration of technologies such as e-learning, social media, and digital learning platforms contributes to expanding access and improving the quality of religious education. However, challenges such as infrastructure inequality, limited digital literacy, and the potential erosion of spiritual values persist. Therefore, IRE transformation in higher education should combine technological innovation with the strengthening of spiritual, moral, and Islamic character values. Such an approach is essential to develop a generation of Muslim intellectuals who are both adaptive to change and rooted in moderate Islamic principles.
