Abstract

Linguistic discrimination is critical to student achievement, as it is the intimidating nature of a person's use and style of language that tends to be denigrated or unfairly tolerated in their own environment. The study provide an explanation regarding how discrimination of linguistic can affect student achievement in teaching English at SMA Negeri 2 Pinrang. For the research objective, observations were made in three classes at different times to determine the effect of student achievement. The data were obtained by interviewing two English teachers and six students regarding their views on attitudes and beliefs during the learning process in class. After being analyzed, it appears that there is unconscious discrimination and this can affect the English learning process itself, not respecting the level of the language itself, pressure from the teacher, affecting student competence in some aspects such as fear of communication, homogenization of achievement, fear of evaluation negative, academic, extra visibility of high ability students, mother tongue restriction, difficulty interacting, self-isolation, and discriminatory jokes. The results of this study indicate that all forms of discriminatory behavior both from classmates and teachers can affect student achievement. So that negative behavior also produces negative responses such as fear, anxiety, and separation so that it limits and restrains student participation in the learning process.

Abstract

This study investigates the types and motivations of cyberbullying expressions used by Twitter users in the Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber drama. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the research analyses transcripts of Twitter comments to understand the underlying motives behind the observed bullying behaviour. The findings have revealed several key motives including fanaticism towards idols. Strong identification with and defence of preferred idols can induce aggressive responses towards perceived threats, leading to attacks on rival fans or their idols. Emotional reactivity that encouuunters tweets perceived as disrespectful or harmful towards their idols can trigger anger and frustration, driving users to engage in cyberbullying as a means of retaliation. Witnessing the success or popularity of other idol groups or their fans can trigger feelings of jealousy, prompting some users to engage in cyberbullying to diminish their rivals' perceived advantages. Engaging in aggressive online behaviour and "winning" arguments against perceived opponents can provide some users with a sense of validation and satisfaction, further reinforcing the cycle of cyberbullying.

Abstract

Reflective thinking is an important factor that can affect a teacher's effectiveness when teaching in the educational setting. This study aims to investigate the relationship between reflective thinking of EFL teachers in Indonesia and their teaching styles. A descriptive-correlational design was employed in the quantitative research method, and a survey with fifteen EFL teachers from different Indonesian schools was used to collect data. With a correlation of 0.757 and a significance value (sig) of 0.001<0.05, the statistical analysis's results demonstrated a strong positive or close to significant relationship between teachers' reflective thinking levels and their teaching styles. Additionally, the percentage of 53.3% indicates that EFL teachers in Indonesia tend to use the "All-round flexible, Adaptable teacher" teaching style when teaching students in English in the classroom. This finding illustrates that Indonesian EFL teachers who exhibit high levels of reflective thinking tend to have more effective teaching styles. Suggestions for future research include in-depth research to understand specific aspects of reflective thinking as it relates to teaching styles.

Abstract

Building arguments for academic writing, such as constructing justification for a research proposal, is regarded a complex task. Moreover, it is believed that male and female authors use and produce the language differently, including perhaps providing thesis and arguments for research. Extensive research on rhetorical analysis of students’ theses has been widely conducted; however, little we know the way they state their claims from gender perspectives. To fill the void, this study aims to explore how Indonesian male and female authors construct and state their arguments in Introduction section for justifying their research from the perspectives of argumentation ability, underpinned by the concepts of transitivity system of SFL approach. Informed by qualitative descriptive research paradigm particularly text analysis, ten Introduction sections from selected English thesis proposals written by male and female authors at a university in Banten Province, Indonesia were subject to analyze. The finding of the research shows that either male students or female students expressed their arguments of their research topic and justification in almost similar fashion. The most frequent processes over the clauses were material process, relational process (attributive and identifying), and mental process (male: 59%, 20%, 11%; female: 49%, 20%, 14%). These findings underscore the common strategies employed by students, regardless of gender, in establishing their research objectives and setting the stage for their academic work. Such insights can be of significance for educators and researchers aiming to guide students in optimizing their academic writing skills, particularly in crafting compelling Introduction sections for thesis proposals.

Abstract

This research investigated the impact of the "Learn English Listening App" on eighth-grade students' listening comprehension. The design of Classroom Action Research (CAR) was used in this study. Two cycles of pre and post-tests, observations, and interviews were conducted. In the first cycle, the app did not lead to a statistical improvement in listening. The mean post-test score (57) was lower than the mean pre-test (61). The observations indicated a positive attitude towards the app, yet some students underutilized its potential, highlighting the need for further support. Interviews provided insights, emphasizing the importance of additional guidance in applying the application. In the second cycle, the students were maximized to utilize the app, significantly improving listening comprehension (mean score: 72.67). The t-test analysis showed a difference (t ≈ 2.43) between the pre and post-test, confirming the app's effectiveness. The observations during the second cycle showed enhanced engagement. The "Learn English Listening App" proved valuable for enhancing eighth-grade students' listening skills. The classroom action research approach allowed for iterative adjustments, contributing to improved scores. In conclusion, the second cycle's t-test results, supported by classroom observations and interviews, provide robust evidence of the app's positive impact. Educators at Islam Al-Azhar 17 Pontianak and similar settings can consider integrating technology-based interventions like the app to enhance students' listening comprehension. Further research could explore its long-term effects and impact on other language skills.
