Abstract

While research on digital language learning materials has received lots of attention, there was a scarcity of studies focusing on specific locations, like Sambas in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. Located near the border of Indonesia and Malaysia, Sambas has a unique EFL learning environment influenced by its geographical location and diverse socio-economic backgrounds. Understanding students' needs and preferences in local contexts is crucial in designing culturally relevant teaching materials. This study aimed to assess the needs and preferences of students in Sambas and provided valuable insights into optimizing the utilization of digital teaching materials for English language learning. This study employed a survey research design to elicit information about current materials, the student's needs, perceptions, and preferences concerning digital materials in English students' needs and preferences, and technological resources. The participants of this study were first-year students of junior secondary school (20 students) in Sambas. The findings revealed that students need videos, movies, and songs with English subtitles as learning materials. Furthermore, the study might shape future research in developing and implementing digital EFL materials customized to the Sambas' cultural context, including local language, customs, and traditions, and their effectiveness in engaging students and improving English language acquisition.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the need for students' workbooks based on local wisdom in the Merdeka Curriculum for junior high school students, particularly at SMPN 3 Air Besar. The study is motivated by the importance of local wisdom in shaping students' character and identity, as well as the need for appropriate teaching materials that can support the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum. This study employed a survey research design to elicit information. To identify the students' needs, data was collected through questionnaires, interviews, and direct observations. The interviews were conducted with students, English teachers, and villagers to gather in-depth information about the students' needs in the materials design. The study proposes various positions for EFL teachers to perform, including visionaries, cultural mediators on a local level, intercultural educators, and role model practitioners. It offers strategies for EFL teachers to include local cultural elements into their classroom instruction, such as establishing a local culturally responsive pedagogy, cultural sensitivity and awareness, and leveraging technology and information to support teaching. Incorporating local culture into EFL teaching can benefit students by raising cultural awareness, developing cultural literacy, building intercultural competence, enhancing language learning experiences, and acquiring skills in eliciting meaning. By using a workbook that takes into account the specific requirements of the students, teachers can better address their learning needs and create a more effective and engaging learning environment. It is recommended that English language teachers utilize the workbook that is based on local wisdom, as it aligns with the Indonesian National Educational System and the current Merdeka Curriculum, which emphasizes the relation between teaching English and the learners' closest environment for meaningful language use. Overall, the study focuses on exploring the need for a supplementary workbook that integrates local wisdom and culture into English language teaching, aiming to enhance students' language proficiency and cross-cultural communication skills.

Abstract

This research investigated the impact of the "Learn English Listening App" on eighth-grade students' listening comprehension. The design of Classroom Action Research (CAR) was used in this study. Two cycles of pre and post-tests, observations, and interviews were conducted. In the first cycle, the app did not lead to a statistical improvement in listening. The mean post-test score (57) was lower than the mean pre-test (61). The observations indicated a positive attitude towards the app, yet some students underutilized its potential, highlighting the need for further support. Interviews provided insights, emphasizing the importance of additional guidance in applying the application. In the second cycle, the students were maximized to utilize the app, significantly improving listening comprehension (mean score: 72.67). The t-test analysis showed a difference (t ≈ 2.43) between the pre and post-test, confirming the app's effectiveness. The observations during the second cycle showed enhanced engagement. The "Learn English Listening App" proved valuable for enhancing eighth-grade students' listening skills. The classroom action research approach allowed for iterative adjustments, contributing to improved scores. In conclusion, the second cycle's t-test results, supported by classroom observations and interviews, provide robust evidence of the app's positive impact. Educators at Islam Al-Azhar 17 Pontianak and similar settings can consider integrating technology-based interventions like the app to enhance students' listening comprehension. Further research could explore its long-term effects and impact on other language skills.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the effectiveness of using Smalltalk2me AI in teaching speaking skills to secondary students. This quantitative research implemented a one-group pretest-posttest pre-experimental design. The collection of data process consisted of three steps: pre-test, treatment, and post-test. Then the researchers found the results of students’ achievement after they were taught by using Smalltalk2me AI. This research used Microsoft Excel to analyze the data by looking for the mean, standard deviation, T-test value, and T-test table. The findings of this study revealed that the average of the post-test was higher than the average of the pretest (30,75>41). It means that this study discovered a significant or substantial difference between the pre-test and post-test scores for students who had been taught by using Smalltalk2me AI. Therefore, it is possible to infer that Smalltalk2me AI is an excellent tool to teach speaking skills since tenth-grade students at SMA 1 Sajingan could be more active in speaking with high accuracy and great fluency.

Abstract

This study explored English teachers' views on incorporating local legends into lessons in West Kalimantan and how AI may help incorporate local legends and engage students using a survey approach. Data were collected from 24 teachers using purposive sampling. The survey revealed that while 70.8% of teachers expressed an interest in using local legends, only 4.2% regularly integrated them into their teaching, indicating a gap between enthusiasm and practice. Although half of the teachers believed that local legends could enhance student engagement, few considered them extremely effective, suggesting the need for more evidence of their impact. Barriers to the use of local legends include limited resources, lack of knowledge, time constraints, and varying student interests. This study highlights the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in overcoming these challenges by providing resources, diversifying materials, and streamlining lesson planning. AI could bridge the gap between teachers' interest in local narratives and their actual use, promoting a more engaging, culturally relevant learning environment. However, the study's small sample size and short data collection period limited the generalizability of the findings. Future research should involve a larger, more diverse sample and longer data collection to provide more comprehensive insights.
