Abstract

Illocutionary act is one type of speech acts which refers to the attempt to accomplish some communicative purpose and the extra meaning of the utterance produced on the basis of its literal meaning. This paper investigated the illocutionary act in talk show used by Oprah Winfrey and J.K Rowling. The focus of this paper is to explore the five types of illocutionary act used in utterances of Oprah Winfrey and J.K Rowling. Those five types are representative (reporting, stating, and concluding), directive (ordering, asking and requesting), commissive (offering, promising, and pledging), expressive (praising, thanking, and apologizing), and declarative (deciding). The writer used qualitative method. To collect the data, the writer transcribed the utterances of talk show and analyzed the context and classifications of illocutionary act by using discourse analysis approach. The illocutionary act used by Oprah Winfrey and J.K Rowling in talk show were analyzed based on the theory of Searle (1969). The findings showed that the utterances in talk show often use questions from Winfrey as the interviewer while Rowling as the interviewee produced the clear utterances. Findings exemplified the utterances such as thank you, pretty good, and I couldn’t stop that can be categorized as thanking in representative, praising in expressive, and deciding in declarative.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the pronunciation errors of phonemes produced by students of Muhammadiyah University of Bulukumba. This study applies a qualitative paradigm. The subjects of this study were second semester students of the Department of English Education with low proficiency levels at the University of Muhammadiyah Bulukumba. Students were asked to pronounce 24 consonant sounds at the beginning, middle, and end of the word to find the data. Students' pronunciation was then phonologically analyzed based on the classification of pronunciation errors found by Moulton, W. G. (1962).The results shows that errors in the pronunciation of English consonants are found in stop voicess, fricative, africative, nasal and semi-vowel consonants. The types of errors in the pronunciation of consonant phonemes are allophones, phonemics and phonetics errors. Allophone error is found in the stop voiceless consonants /p/, /t/, and /k/ which were found at the beginning of the syllable. Phonemic and phonetic errors are found in the pronunciation of voiced /v/, voiced /z/, voiceless /θ/, voiced /ð/, and voiceless /ʃ/. The same error is also found in voiceless /ʃ/ which was pronounced without using the sound /h/, as well as phonetic errors that was pronounced using the sound /t/. Phonetic errors are also found in the pronunciation of fricative sounds /tʃ/ and /dᴣ/, nasal /ƞ/ and semi vowel sounds /j/ which were pronounced not in accordance with the actual sound, thus other meaningless sounds are formed.

Abstract

This study aims to improve students' ability to write an essay in the descriptive text genre. Descriptive text is a genre that serves to explain something to the reader through writing. To make it easier for researchers to conduct research, researchers use the CAR (Classroom Action Research) method to make it easier for researchers to be closer to the sample. The sample in this study were students of SMPN 5 Percut Sei Tuan with a total of 30 students. Researchers have conducted research with five meetings in four stages, namely planning, and observing. action, and reflection. Quantitative and Qualitative data are tools used in collecting data. Quantitatively, the value of the students' descriptive text is as data, which has been carried out in two cycles. Started the pre-test with a total score of 1953,3 with an average of 64.5. In the first cycle, the total score was 2204.05 with an average of 73.4. The researcher again conducted a post-test in the second cycle to achieve the requirements for teaching success, namely 85%. In cycle 2 the total score was 2621.6 with an average of 87.3. This proves that there is a significant change in student scores using the example non-example method. Qualitative data taken from observation sheets, interviews, and writer's diaries show that it is easier for students to understand teaching and can attract students' attention with an image applicator that guides students to write an essay.

Abstract

Speaking a foreign language requires various skills, including grammar, vocabulary, instruction, etc. In English Language Teaching, pronunciation is one of the most crucial abilities. If speakers have poor pronunciation, their words will be incomprehensible to audiences. Despite the difficulty of acquiring pronunciation, many EFL classrooms pay the least attention to pronunciation training. This study aims to evaluate the effect of pronunciation training on English speaking ability of non-non-native speakers. The method used is the Literature Review method. The results of the study show that pronunciation training has a positive effect on the English-speaking ability of non-non-native speakers. This training helps improve pronunciation, intonation, and accent in speaking English. Non-non-native speakers also experience increased confidence in speaking English after attending pronunciation training. However, the results of the study also show that factors such as difficulties in mastering vocabulary and grammar still affect the ability to speak English as a whole. Therefore, it is advisable to consider pronunciation training as part of a holistic and integrated English learning program with special attention to other aspects such as vocabulary and grammar.

The research design used in this study is a qualitative descriptive research design. The researchers used the purposive sampling technique to select participants. Participant of this research were an 11 male students and 11 female students of English students of UKI Toraja. The instrument used are observation and interview. This study used the interactive model to analyze data. Data analysis techniques are carried out interactively and take place continuously until complete until the data is saturated. This study confirms that: 1) both male and female participants exhibit a prevalent utilization of the 'compete' negotiation style when initiating conversations within diverse social contexts. Specifically, this negotiation style encompasses proactive engagement in discussions for the explicit purpose of seeking information pertinent to the context. Notably, a higher proclivity for information-seeking through competing behavior is observed among female participants, while male participants tend to engage in conversations without introducing novel topics, emphasizing the nature of their engagement as oriented toward interaction rather than information acquisition. 2) The Influence of Gender Initiation within the Educational Conversation Context, Particularly in the Realms of Attaining Research Information: A Scholarly Exploration and Fostering Collaborative Engagement for Assignment Completion among Peers.
