Abstract

Transportation of broiler chickens in Indonesia from cage to traditional slaughterhouse has the potential to cause stress because it does not heed the elements of animal welfare. Thus, this study aims to examine the impact of transport time to hematological value with ZnSO4 given in broiler chickens. The research design used was Randomized Block Design (RAK) of factorial with two treatment factors. Treatment factors are transport time (1, 2, and 3 hours) and supplementation of ZnSO4 (0, 80, and 160 ppm). Total of 144 male broiler chickens aged 4 weeks were the object of observation. Transportation performed in the early morning. Parameters studied were hematology value which are consists of erythrocyte count, hemoglobin level, hematocrit value, and erythrocyte index. The data analysis was done statistically using IBM SPSS version 20. Transport time proved to affect hematological value of birds seen from the changes, which are decrease of erythrocyte count and hematocrit values. Birds were indicated microcytic anemia based on low MCV value. Supplementation of ZnSO4through drinking water at 80 and 160 ppm for 7 days prior to slaughter was able to maintain hemoglobin and MCH as well as MCHC of birds up to 2 hours of transport time.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine blood parameters during exsanguination process, and physical meat quality characteristics of Brahman cross at different preslaughter resting periods. The total number of cattle used in this study was 24 heads of Brahman cross; they were alloted to  3, 6, 12 and 24 hours preslaughter resting periods with 6 heads replication for each treatment. The measurements of blood parameters comprised  gushing blood downtime, weight and presentage of blood loss. Physical characteristics of Meat quality assessment were based on ultimate pH, water holding capacity, cooking loss, and shear force. The data was analyzed using analysis of variance and further differences between treatments were tested using Duncan’s multiple range test. The results showed that preslaughter resting period had significant effected (P<0.05) on gushing blood downtime, and the weight and presentage of blood loss.  Cattle with 24 hours preslaughter resting periods had longer gushing blood downtime, higher  weight and presentage of blood loss, and they yielded meat with lower ultimate pH, cooking loss and shear force value if compared to those with 3 and or 6 hours preslaughter resting period.  Thus, increasing cattle resting periods before slaughter from 3 to 24 hours  might have increased gushing blood downtime, blood lost at exsanguination and cosequently  produced better meat quality.

Abstract

Bali cattle are potentially developed on pasture and palm oil plantation lands.  They are kept in small scale by local farmers. The study aimed to investigate the forage and bali cattle productivitie in those two grazing areas. Total land area, carrying capacity and total land capacity for bali cattle were analysed to evaluate the forage productivity of pasture and oil plantation grazing areas. A total of 60 heads of bali cattle aging 1-3 years were used to evaluate their productivities including bodyweight and linear body measurements. A number of 30 heads of the animal had been raised on pasture and the other 30 heads on palm oil plantation. The results showed that there were 7191 ha of pasture and 5519 ha of palm oil plantation that could cover grazing cattle of 28 188.72 animal unit and 20 585.87 animal unit respectively. The carrying capacity of pasture was slightly higher than that of palm oil plantation, which were 3.92 AU and 3.73 AU per ha per year respectively. The bali cattle, particularly female animal, raised on pasture had better productivity in term of body weight and hip height. The higher cattle productivity on pasture was due to the additional supplementation of King grass and Elephant grass. In general, the bali cattle kept in the two different raising system (pasture and palm oil plantation system) had good performance since their population were still below their carrying capacities.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the GHSR genes polymorphism in chickens and to analyze the association of these genes on carcass weight and commercial cuts in chicken. A total of 60 local chickens (33 hen and 27 roosters) was used in this study. The chickens were bred in the colony cages and given full time access (ad libitum) to the commercial feed. The PCR-RFLP method was used to analyzed the gene polymorphism. The Hin6I was used as a restriction enzyme. The genotype frequency, allele frequency and Hardy Weinberg equilibrium were analyzed in this study. The phenotypic characteristics (body weight, carcass weight, breast weight, thigh weight, drumstick weight, wing weight and back weight) were analyzed using T test. The result showed that there were two genotypes (CT and TT) found in kampung chickens. The frequency of CT and TT genotype were 0.317 and 0.683, respectively. The value of Ho and He were 0.317 and 0.267 respectively. This population was not equal according to Hardy Weinberg  equilibrium analysis. The GHSR gene polymorphism was significantly associated (P<0.05) with  body weight, carcass weight, breast weight, thigh weight, drumstick weight, wing weight and back weight. The TT genotype was higher than CT genotype on all traits. The locus of GHSR|Hin6I could be used as a marker associated selection (MAS).

Abstract

Mastitis is an inflammation of  internal udder tissue caused by bacteria, it decrease milk production both in quality and quantity. This study was aimed to identify expression and pathway analysis of gene CD14 and IL10 as resistance genes in dairy infected with subclinical mastitis. Sample were taken from milk and blood 10 healthy dairy and 10 dairy containing subclinical mastitis used for CMT and RNA isolation used for gene expression analysis. The result showed that expression in healthy dairy CD14 gene had a higher expression (P<0.05). In contrast the IL10 gene had a high expression in infected dairy with subclinical mastitis (P<0.05). CD14 was an early signal receptor that activates a complex nonspecific immune response to induce various immune characteristics such as the production of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, the production of antimicrobial peptides and so on destroy pathogens. The high expression of IL10 in infected dairy with subclinical mastitis suggested that immune responses were not functioning properly considered due to inhibiton of cytokine transduction signals by excessive production of IL10.
