Abstract

Introduction: Traumatic ulcers are damage to the mucosal tissue of the oral cavity which causes some of the epithelial structures to be lost to exceed the basement membrane or even reach the lamina propia. The causes of ulcers is trauma, which can be physical, mechanical, thermal or chemical trauma. One of traditional treatments for traumatic ulcers is basil (Ocimum sanctum L.) leaves which contain such as alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, and tannins as anti-inflammatory. This research was aimed to prove the effect of basil leaves (Ocimum sanctum L.) extract gel with a concentration of 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% to traumatic ulcer area in Rattus norvegicus. Method: Laboratory experimental study with a post test only control group design. The basil leaves extract made into a gel concentration of 0.5%, 1, and 1.5%, and the control group using a CMC-Na gel, applied to Rattus norvegicus which had been made before by a traumatic ulcer. Traumatic ulcer area measurements using digital calipers on day 0, day 3, day 5, and day 7. The data were analyzed by oneway ANOVA test. Results: The significance value on one way anova test of research group was 0,000. Average traumatic ulcer area in research group smaller than control group. Conclusion: There was an effect of basil leaves (Ocimum sanctum L.) extract gel to traumatic ulcer area in Rattus norvegicus.

Abstract

The prevalence of dental caries among children in Indonesia is still high. Riskesdas data in 2018 shows that children aged 8-12 years are vulnerable to dental caries problems. Dental caries have an impact on children's quality of life. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between risk factors for dental caries and children's quality of life and the magnitude of the influence of each risk factor. This type of research is analytic observational with a cross-sectional design. The population is elementary school children in the area of Banyuraden, Gamping, Sleman, Yogyakarta. The time of the study was from March 2021 to August 2021. The sampling technique was carried out by purposive sampling; the number of samples was 200 children. The influence variable is the risk factor for dental caries, and the affected variable is the child's quality of life. The research instrument is a questionnaire consisting of 30 statement items. Assessment of dental caries risk factors includes knowledge of caries, tooth brushing behavior, and cariogenic food eating habits. In contrast, assessing children's quality of life is seen from oral cavity complaints, functional complaints, psychological complaints, and limitations of social interaction. Data were analyzed by univariate, bivariate, and chi-square tests. The results showed more children with low quality of life (67.0%) than children with high quality of life (33.0%). The chi-square correlation test results showed a significant relationship between knowledge about dental caries and children's quality of life (p=0.002; OR=2.77), between tooth brushing behavior and children's quality of life (p=0.012; OR=2.14).  as well as between the habit of eating cariogenic foods with the quality of life of children (p=0.020; OR=2.03). This study concludes a significant relationship between knowledge, behavior, and eating habits with children's quality of life.

Abstract

Abstract

Tongue cancer is one of the most common malignancies of all oral malignancies. Cancer staging is induced by a systemic inflammatory response with one of the markers, one of them is neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR). This study aims to provide an overview of the NLR as a marker of the degree of inflammation in patients with tongue cancer. This systematic literature review was conducted online from January 2021 to March 2021 against articles reporting RNL as a marker of inflammatory action in patients with tongue cancer. The search for articles referred to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) and conducted through PubMed, PMC, ScienceDirect, and EBSCOhost with the publication year 2015-2020. Selected articles met the criteria according to the PICO framework (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome). Article screening is done by reading the title and abstract, checking for duplication, and reading the entire text. Sixteen in 841 research articles with observational study design were identified, the NLR cut-off value ranges from 2.04-2.95. Nine in ten research articles suggested a relationship between the NLR value and several clinicopathological characteristics of the patient. Twelve articles mentioned that there was the association of RNL with patient overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), and disease-specific survival (DSS). The NLR value can be an indicator of the degree of inflammation in patients with tongue cancer as assessed from the parameters of the clinicopathological assessment and can be a predictive factor for patient's prognosis or survival status.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Periodontal disease is a disease that attacks the tissue that surrounds and supports the teeth consisting of the gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum and alveolar bone. In patients who have a history of systemic diseases such as diabetes, the patient's oral health can also be affected, one of which is the appearance of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is related to diabetes mellitus where diabetes mellitus with uncontrolled glucose levels is a risk factor that aggravates periodontal diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis. Extraction is the act of taking teeth and tooth roots from the socket involving bone tissue and soft tissue in the oral cavity. Tooth extraction or extraction is a treatment procedure that is quite often performed by. There are various factors that influence tooth extraction, including sociodemography. Extraction is more common in patients with low levels of education than in societies with higher levels of education. This condition probably occurs because of the level of individual knowledge. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic chronic disease that has a prevalence that continues to increase every year, this disease is caused by metabolic disorders so that the body cannot control the levels of sugar in the blood. The immune response is impaired in diabetic patients.

Abstract

Introduction: Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the palatine tonsils that caused by the invasion of microorganisms into the mucous membranes of the tonsils. Age is related to the tonsils immunological activity on the size of the palatine tonsils. Oral hygiene is one of determinant risk factor for chronic tonsillitis. This study aims to provide a characteristics of age and oral hygiene in determining the size of the palatine tonsils in chronic tonsillitis patients. Methods: This systematic literature review was conducted online from January to March 2021 against articles reporting on age, palatine tonsils size, and oral hygiene on chronic tonsillitis. The search for articles referred to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) which conducted through PubMed, PMC, Science Direct, and Google Scholar with the with the publication year 2015-2020. Selected articles met the criteria according to the PICO framework (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome). The articles were screened by checking for duplication, reading the titles and abstracts, and the full text articles. Results: Twelve in 16 research articles (75%) mentioned that there was a relation between age and enlargement of the size of the palatine tonsils in chronic tonsillitis patients, and one in 16 articles (6,25%) mentioned that there was no relation between age and tonsillar hypertrophy. Three articles (18,75%) mentioned the role and relationship of bacteria in the oral cavity related to the process of the occurrence of chronic tonsillitis. Two in 3 research articles (67%) mentioned that there was a relation between the oral hygiene status and enlargement of the size of the palatine tonsils in chronic tonsillitis patients. One in 3 articles (33%) mentioned that there was no relation. Conclusion: Ages 5-15 years had T3 tonsil size (70%), ages 13-15 years had T2 tonsil size (80%), ages 16-48 years had T2 tonsil size (76.30%) and ages 19-25 years had T3 tonsil size (53%). This means that all ages could be experience of tonsil enlargement in chronic tonsillitis. Adults had bad oral hygiene status (76.30%), meanwhile in children only 14.47% in chronic tonsillitis patients.
