Abstract

The degree of acidity of saliva is influenced by the consumption of carbohydrate-containing foods. Daily food consumed by school children at home and outside the home is cariogenic food containing many carbohydrates. Children like sweet biscuit snacks. Sorghum-based biscuits are a healthy snack for school children. Sorghum biscuits contain xylitol compounds and are sugar-free. The purpose of this study was to determine changes in salivary pH after consuming non-karyogenic biscuits made from sorghum in elementary school children. This type of study was an experiment with 3 treatment groups and 1 control group. There are 4 groups: sorghum biscuits, 100% xylitol biscuits, 50% xylitol biscuits, and the control group. The design of this study is pre and post-test experiment design, namely the degree of acidity (pH) saliva pre-test is carried out before consuming biscuit snacks, while the post-test is carried out consuming biscuit snacks. Salivary pH measurement using a pH meter. Statistical test to determine the effect of consuming all 4 biscuits using the one-way ANOVA test. The result of glucose content in 50% xylitol biscuits is the lowest at 2.38%. Consuming biscuits with low glucose levels causes a slight decrease in salivary pH compared to consuming biscuits with high glucose levels. Sorghum-based biscuits are the best for dental health because they slightly lower the pH of saliva. But children dislike sorghum biscuits the most. This study concludes that 100% xylitol biscuits can lower salivary pH slightly low and are liked by elementary school children.

Abstract

The surface roughness of orthodontic archwires is an essential factor that deter- mines the effectiveness of arch-guided tooth movement. CuNiTi-based wires are widely used in orthodontic treatment, but the oral environment can trigger corrosion of CuNiTi orthodontic wires. The tannin content in avocado seed extract can be used as a corrosion inhibitor through two working mechanisms, namely, forming a passive layer and an adsorption process. The aim of this research is to examine the effect of avocado seed extract as a corrosion inhibitor on the surface roughness of orthodontic CuNiTi wire. The as- retacngular 17 x 25 inch CuNiTi wire were taken in 4 group (1 control group soaked in artificial saliva and 3 treatment groups soaked in avocado seed extract ).  Samples were immersed in avocado seed extract with concentrations of 1,5 g/L, 2 g/L and 2,5g/L for 7 days. For surface roughness was test Surface Roughness Average analysis. One way ANOVA test showed that there was a significant difference between the control group and all treatment groups in the surface roughness test with a value of p = 0.000. Post Hoc LSD test showed that there were no significant differences between treatment group 2 and treatment group 3 with a p value = 0.122. Providing avocado seed extract with tannin content at concentrations of 1.5 g/L and 2 g/L can reduce surface roughness on CuNiTi wire due to the corrosion process.

Abstract

Oral health is a recurring problem because children are still in the transition from baby teeth to permanent teeth. At this stage, the child is still dependent on the parents; therefore, the role of the parents is to teach and communicate the importance of dental and oral health. This research aims to identify the characteristics, knowledge, and motivation of parents with the preventive damage to children. This study design used cross-sectional study approach and the number of samples used in this study was 111 parents with a total sampling technique. The statistical analysis of the study uses Kendall's Tau C. Research results obtained by respondents: parents aged >35-45 years as many as 64 (57.7%), females by 85 (76.6%), high school education/PT 84 (75.7%) parents, and income levels < 4,000,000 as 80 (7.1%) parents. Statistical tests have shown that there is a relationship between knowledge (p-value = 0.000) and parental motivation (p-value = 0.000) with the prevention of tooth decay in children, but no relationship between age (p-value = 0.424), gender (p-value = 0.01), education level (p-value = 0.101) and parental income level (p-value = 0.454) with a dental safety measure on grades 1-3. Therefore, oral health education is necessary to maintain parental knowledge and motivation.

Abstract

Deaf children are those with limited hearing, which affects the reception of information, including knowledge about dental and oral hygiene. As a result, many deaf children have moderate to poor debris index scores. This is largely due to a lack of awareness about the importance of maintaining dental hygiene. One strategy to address this issue is using “digital-based pop up book media,” which offers engaging and enjoyable education during the learning process. This study aimed to develop and assess the effectiveness of such media in improving toothbrushing behavior and reducing the debris index in deaf children. This research was conducted using a research and development (R&D) approach with a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest group design. The sample consisted of 22 deaf children, with 11 in the intervention group (SLBN Semarang) and 11 in the control group (SLBN Ungaran), selected using the Slovin formula. Data were analyzed using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient, Shapiro-Wilk, Paired t-test, Wilcoxon, and Mann Whitney tests. Results showed significant improvements in the intervention group. Knowledge scores (p = 0.002, Δ = 1.36), attitudes (p = 0.004, Δ = 1.36), skills (p = 0.007, Δ = 2.91), and debris index (p = 0.000, Δ = 1.364) improved more significantly compared to the control group. In conclusion, digital-based pop up book media is a feasible and effective method to enhance toothbrushing behavior and reduce the debris index among deaf children.

Abstract

Background: The main bacteria involved in the formation of dental caries is Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans). One approach to reduce the growth of S. mutans bacterial colonies is by brushing teeth with toothpaste containing antibacterial agent. The commonly used antibacterial agent is chlorhexidine, which is the gold standard chemical in reducing the colonization of S. mutans bacteria and other oral biofilms. However, over time, it causes various side effects, thus necessitating the search for alternative natural ingredients. One of  potential ingredient with antibacterial agent is the Spirulina platensis, which contains secondary metabolites known to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria. Thus, Spirulina platensis can be added to toothpaste as an antibacterial agent. Method: This study employed an experimental laboratory design with a post-test-only control group design. The study consisted of 7 treatments with 5 replications. Antibacterial activity was tested using the agar diffusion method by observing the average diameter of the inhibition zone formed. Data were analyzed using parametric one-way ANOVA. Discussion and Results: In this study, toothpaste with Spirulina platensis extract at concentrations of 0.25%, 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 3% can inhibited the growth of S. mutans with average inhibition zone diameters of 20.4 mm, 20.8 mm, 21.8 mm, 22.3 mm, and 22.7 mm. The one-way ANOVA parametric test results showed a value of p<0.05, indicating a significant difference in the antibacterial activity of S. mutans in all treatment groups. Conclusion: Toothpaste formulations with Spirulina platensis extract have antibacterial activity against S. mutans bacteria.

Abstract

Angular cheilitis and pseudomembranous candidiasis are oral infections caused by Candida albicans. Angular cheilitis patients also experience oral candidiasis because the Candida reservoir is intraoral. Iron deficiency anemia was closely related to this infection. A 50-year-old female patient complaint of pain in the commissure and tongue 3 weeks ago. Extraoral examination showed anemic conjunctiva and fissure erythema with crusting in bilateral commissures. Intraoral examination showed atrophy of papillae with a yellowish-white plaque that can be scraped off and leaves erythema on the tongue. A complete blood examination was performed and showed a decrease in hemoglobin, hematocrit, erythrocytes, MCV, MCH, and MCHC. The patient was diagnosed angular cheilitis and pseudomembranous candidiasis with iron deficiency anemia. The therapy was miconazole 2% cream, nystatin oral suspension 100.000 IU/ml, and iron supplements. The lesions healed after 2 weeks of therapy and the patient was consulted to an internist. The patient has Angular cheilitis and pseudomembranous candidiasis triggered by iron deficiency anemia. Iron deficiency anemia causes a decrease in salivary transferrin protein which is fungistatic so that Candida grows excessively. Angular Cheilitis therapy is miconazole cream which inhibit the synthesis of ergosterol and nystatin for candidiasis therapy which works by binding to Candida plasma membrane sterols, causing leakage and then death. Iron deficiency anemia therapy is iron supplements; however, drug therapy alone is less effective, and consultation with an internist is required for further therapy. Anemia has big potential to be a risk factor for angular cheilitis and pseudomembranous candidiasis so comprehensive treatment is needed.
