Abstract

Background: The community's low incidence of excellent and proper brushing behavior, which is primarily displayed by children (about 2%), is increasing the prevalence of dental decay. By employing the playing strategy, specifically with four card media, which has its own appeal due to the intriguing pictures, one can improve brushing behavior, which is now inadequate. Research Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of quartet card media counseling on toothbrushing behavior in elementary school students. This research used quasi experimental with pretest and posttest control group design. The samples were collected using total sampling, and they were 110 respondents. The sample is split into two groups: the experimental group and the control group. The data were collected using questionnaires for pretest and posttest. The data analysis used a Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney test. Research Results: Tooth brushing behavior in elementary school students was 47.3% with good criteria, moderate 47.3%, and increased with good criteria 92.7%, while 7.3% following counseling. The experimental group's mean value was 14,36 compared to the control group's 12,64. The Wilcoxon test resulted in a p-value of 0.000, the Mann Whitney test obtained p=0.000. Conclusion: Counseling using quartet card media is effective in improving brushing behavior in elementary school children. Keyword : Effectiveness of counseling, quartet card media, brushing behavior.

Abstract

Autistic children experience barriers to social interaction, communication, behavior, language, emotion and imagination. Autistic children have different characteristics from children in general. Children are not yet able to brush their teeth properly and there is no special dental health program for children with autism. The RABA (Rifka's Applied Behavior Analysis) is arranged according to their characteristics. This study aimed to develop RABA (Rifka's Applied Behavior Analysis) to improve brushing skills and decrease debris index in children with autistic children. This type of research is uses R&D method and model trial (Quasi-Experiment Pretest and Posttest with Control Group Design). The research subjects of autistic children were divided into 2 groups. The results of the model design are validated by experts. Data were tested using intraclass correlation coefficient, Chi Square, Shapiro wilk, repeated measure annova, independent sample t-test.Expert validation of RABA (Rifka's Applied Behaviour Analysis) model averaged 85.46 (very feasible) to improve brushing skills and decrease debris index of autistic children with a p-value  of 0.000. This model effectively to improve the brushing skills of autistic children with a p-value (0.033) and decrease the debris index of autistic children with p-value (0.004) compared to the control group. The application of the RABA (Rifka's Applied Behavior Analysis) model was effective to improve brushing of autistic children compared to the control group.

Abstract

Children with intellectual disabilities are children with below average intelligence who experience a decline in intellectual function, difficulty communicating and adaptive behavior, arising before the age of 18 years. This child has not been able to brush his teeth properly, for that audio-visual media is used as a tool that can be seen and heard in his delivery, one of which is the development of April's Mophie model to improve the toothbrushing skills of children with moderate intellectual disabilities. Produce April's Mophie model as a learning medium to improve toothbrushing skills in children with moderate intellectual impairment. Research using Research and Development (R&D) method. Quasi-experimental research design (pre-post with control group design). Purposive sampling technique with 11 children of the intervention group and 11 children of the control group, with a duration of treatment given 21 days. Data were tested using Interclass Correlation Coefficient, Paired T-Test, Wilcoxon Test, and Mann-Withney. April's Mophie model showed a p-value of 0.000 which means that this model is feasible as an effort to improve toothbrushing skills in children with moderate intellectual impairment. The implementation of this model effectively increased the action of brushing children's teeth (p = 0.041), as well as a decrease in children's debris index (p = 0.037) compared to the control group. April's Mophie model effectively improves toothbrushing skills in moderately impaired children.
