Abstract

Background: Interprofessional education (IPE) is a joint learning process between two or more students from the health profession to develop collaboration skills and improve the quality of health services. With  IPE, students develop a deeper understanding of various health professions' roles and responsibilities, enhancing their ability to communicate and collaborate effectively. This study aims to develop IPE learning involving five health professions at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Universitas Jambi. Methods: This study uses a research and development design. This study utilized a qualitative approach, specifically through Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) at the research and information gathering (define) stage. A total of ten lecturers and five heads of study programs from medical, nursing, pharmacies, psychology, and public health programs were involved in this study. Results: Three themes were derived from the results: Curriculum, Faculty Development, and Institutional Support. Community-based IPE allows students from various health study programs at FKIK UNJA to be involved in these activities. To ensure effective implementation of IPE learning,  it is crucial to conduct training for faculty facilitators and field instructors related to IPE learning and to form a team responsible for developing, delivering, and managing the IPE program. Institutional support for interprofessional education (IPE), namely facilities, infrastructure, and a partnership with primary health centers, is critical for implementing and sustaining community-based IPE. Conclusion: The IPE learning that will be implemented at FKIK UNJA is community-based IPE. Three crucial elements must be prepared to implement IPE: curriculum, faculty development, and institutional support. Keywords: Interprofessional Education; Community-Based Setting

Abstract

Background: End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) is the origin of chronic kidney disease (CKD), both in adults and children. The progression of CKD to ESKD often cannot be prevented, even with sophisticated and up-to-date medicines. Method: Data search was conducted by searching for articles in electronic databases, namely PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Cochrane and Google Scholar. Result: Based on the pathophysiology, the transformation from CKD to ESKD involves a process of fibrosis in the kidneys, which is extensive and persistent. Several studies in experimental animals have found that treatment with stem cells in liver cells can repair cells that have experienced fibrosis, this may be analogous to fibrosis in the kidneys. Through this library extract, we will discuss stem cells, as well as how to treat stem cells for CKD and ESKD in the future. Conclusion: There are various variations in research results on the effectiveness of stem cell therapy in CKD patients. This occurs because of differences in the baseline clinical entity of CKD. Research on stem cell therapy in children has not been well published.

Abstract

Introduction: Depression in the elderly is a significant public health concern and is linked to elevated HbA1c, a marker of long-term glucose control. Persistent hyperglycemia may impair neurogenesis, disrupt brain networks, and reduce neurotransmitter activity, making HbA1c a potential biomarker for depression. Purpose: This study aims to explore the potential of HbA1c as a biomarker for predicting depression severity in the elderly. Methods: This cross-sectional study examined 93 elderly residents at Bina Bhakti Nursing Home, who exhibited varying levels of depression severity. Depression was assessed using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), and HbA1c levels were analyzed using an automated clinical analyzer. To evaluate the predictive ability of HbA1c for depression severity, we used the area under the curve (AUC) from a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. A GDS score of 4 or higher was used to indicate severe depression. Results: The AUC for HbA1c was 0.692, with a p-value of 0.049, indicating a statistically significant relationship between HbA1c levels and depression severity. Conclusion: Elevated HbA1c levels may serve as a potential biomarker for depression risk in the elderly. Routine HbA1c monitoring could support early detection and timely intervention. Further research is needed to clarify its clinical relevance.

Abstract

Background: Central obesity is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, influenced by both genetic and lifestyle factors. The rs9939609 variant of Fat Mass and Obesity-Associated (FTO) gene has been associated with increased risk of central obesity, potentially modulated by dietary intake and physical activity. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the association between the FTO rs9939609 variant and central obesity, and its interaction with dietary intake and physical activity among adults in Jambi, Indonesia. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 175 adults. Central obesity was defined using NCEP ATP III criteria. Dietary intake and physical activity were assessed using 24-hour food recall and the IPAQ, respectively. Genotyping was performed using the Tetra ARMS-PCR. Bivariate analysis was used to assess associations. Results: Individuals with the AT genotype had a significantly increased risk of central obesity (OR= 3.29; 95% CI: 1.30–8.35; p= 0.01). Under the dominant model (AAAT), the association remained significant (OR= 2.90; 95% CI: 1.17-7.16; p= 0.02). The risk was higher among individuals with high caloric intake (OR= 4.64) and low to moderate physical activity (OR= 4.77). Conclusion: The FTO rs9939609 variant is associated with increased central obesity risk, and in the presence of obesogenic lifestyle factors.

Abstract

Background: The extract of senggani leaves (Melastoma malabathricum) has attracted attention as a potential anti-inflammatory agent due to its diverse phytochemical content, including flavonoids, tannins, and other polyphenols, which have been shown to possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities in several previous studies. This study aims to determine the difference in the percentage of inflammation inhibition of paw edema in rats induced by carrageenan through the administration of senggani leaves extract. Methods: In this study, 24 rats were divided into 4 groups. Negative control group was given Na-CMC 0.5%, Positive control group was given Na-diclofenac 50 mg/kg BW. Two dosage groups were given senggani extract solution at 250 and 500 mg/kg BW. Carrageenan is used to induce local inflammation by injecting a 2% carrageenan solution in physiological NaCl subcutaneously into the subplantar region of all test animal groups to elicit an edema response. Paw thickness is measured using calipers at hour 0 before inflammation induction, followed by measurements at hours 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Results: The peak inhibitory effect (62.10% and 60.41%) for both doses of senggani extract was observed at the 3rd hour, suggesting a rapid onset of action. At the higher dose (500 mg/kg BW), senggani extract exhibited comparable or even slightly superior inhibitory effects to Na-diclofenac. Conclusion: Senggani extract has potential as a natural anti-edema agent. Further research is needed to explore its mechanism of action and optimize its therapeutic use.

Abstract

Background: The rapid development of internet technology presents both opportunities and challenges, particularly internet addiction among adolescents, which impacts health, education, and social stability. In Indonesia, over 90% of adolescents are internet users, raising significant concerns. This study aims to determine the prevalence of internet addiction and identify contributing sociodemographic, behavioral, and psychosocial factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 143 students from SMA Islam Al Azhar 8 Bekasi, selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected using a validated Internet Addiction Questionnaire and analyzed with bivariate and multivariate methods. Results: The prevalence of internet addiction was 34.27%. Significant factors included frequent violations of parental internet usage limits (OR=6.70; CI 95%: 1.76–25.56; p=0.005) and lack of participation in religious activities (OR=3.31; CI 95%: 1.09–10.04; p=0.034), indicating that weak parental control and low religious involvement increase the risk of internet addiction. Conclusion: Parental supervision, family support, and adolescent engagement in religious and social activities are crucial preventive measures. Interventions focusing on self-regulation, parental monitoring, and balanced internet use are recommended to reduce addiction risks.
