Abstract

Background: The coverage of exclusive breastfeeding in Indonesia, including in Jambi Province, is still below the national target. In 2022, exclusive breastfeeding coverage in Jambi Province only reached 27.14%, a sharp decrease from 64.67% in the previous year. One of the psychological factors that affect the success of exclusive breastfeeding is the mother's self-efficacy in breastfeeding. Objective: To determine the relationship between the self-efficacy of breastfeeding and the success of exclusive breastfeeding in mothers with babies aged 6–12 months. Methods: This study is a descriptive analytical study with a cross-sectional approach. Data collection was carried out in March 2024 at PMB Azimah and PMB Zulfiatun Rangkuti, Jambi City, with a sample of 45 postpartum mothers selected through a total sampling technique. Data were collected using the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale–Short Form (BSES-SF) questionnaire and the exclusive breastfeeding questionnaire, then analyzed using the chi-square test with a significance level of α = 0.05. Results: As many as 57.78% of mothers managed to provide exclusive breastfeeding. There was a significant relationship between the self-efficacy of breastfeeding and the success of exclusive breastfeeding (p = 0.004). Conclusion: The higher the mother's confidence in breastfeeding, the greater the chance of success in exclusive breastfeeding. Continuous interventions to improve maternal self-efficacy need to be carried out by health workers to support the success of exclusive breastfeeding programs.

Abstract

Background: Elevated thyroid hormone levels have a high prevalence this year. It has a long-term impact on the cognitive and productivity of sufferers, leading to a decrease in the quality of life of individuals and an increase in social and economic burden. Previous studies have shown a direct link between hyperthyroidism and mental disorders, but the impact on cognitive and emotional functioning still needs to be clarified. Early detection and management are the main challenges in preventing and treating this condition. Methods: Our study was a literature review of medical journal for the last 10 years through NCBI, Google Scholar, Clinicalkey, Semantic Scholar, Sciencedirect, and Springer. Result: Hyperthyroidism caused by dysregulation of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Thyroid axis that disrupts the balance of triiodothyronine and thyroxine hormones, leading to emotional and cognitive impairment. The brain and thyroid tissue are also affected by the FDPS, PPIL3, MMAB, and ALDH2 genes, which are characterized by significant expression in areas of brain function that are involved in cognitive, emotional, and social behaviour. Conclusion: A multidisciplinary approach, including pharmacological therapy, cognitive therapy, and community education, is an important step in reducing the impact of hyperthyroidism on mental health as well as social and economic aspects.

Abstract

Background: Hyperglycemic is a condition characterized by elevated blood glucose levels, with serum blood glucose levels exceeding 126 mg/dL. Hyperglycemia can induce oxidative stress. Oxidative stress occurs due to an increase in free radicals or a decrease in antioxidant defense activity. Cinnamon bark can enhance antioxidant levels and decrease indicators of oxidative stress. This study examines the impact of cinnamon bark extract on catalase activity levels in hyperglycemic rats. Method: This study used an experimental design with a post-test-only group design. The rats were divided into 5 groups, namely the negative control group (K-), the positive control group (K+), treatment group 1 (dose 100 mg/kgBW), treatment group 2 (dose 200 mg/kgBW) and treatment group 3 (dose 300 mg/kgBW) with 6 rats each. The normality test was carried out using the Shapiro-Wilk test followed by One Way ANOVA. Result: The administration of cinnamon bark extract has been shown to increase catalase activity levels. The most significant increase was observed in dose group 1, with an average of 5.62 Units/mg, which is higher than the control group + (K+), at 3.88 Units/mg. Conclusion: Administration of bark extract has been shown to increase catalase activity in hyperglycemic Rats.

Abstract

Background: Open defecation and other poor sanitation and hygienic practices create major public health problems in many developing nations. Improving community health and well-being depends on attending to these problems. Using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), this study aims to investigate the links between Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) parameters and open defecation behavior in riverbank villages. Method: Environmental observations combined with structured questionnaires was used in a cross-sectional survey. Convenience sampling helped participants to be gathered; PLS-SEM data analysis was used to investigate the intricate connections between WASH factors and open defecation behavior. Result: results show that there is no statistically significant relationship between open defecation practices and water (coefficient = -0.128, p = 0.355), sanitation (coefficient = -0.493, p = 0.861), income (coefficient = -0.030, p = 0.675), or education (coefficient = 0.067, p = 0.377). Furthermore, there is no significant link between open defecation practices and water (coefficient = -0.009, p = 0.911) and sanitation (coefficient = 0.058, p = 0.479) moderating effects of hygiene. Conclusion: Effective reduction of open defecation hinges on comprehensive WASH interventions that combine improved sanitation infrastructure with hygiene promotion and community involvement. Prioritizing hygiene education and fostering community ownership are essential for sustainable public health improvements. (rekomendasi dari hasil untuk future persepective )

Abstract

Background: Fetal biometry is the cornerstone of modern prenatal care. This study aims to assess fetal size (fetal biometry at a given time point compared to normal charts) and estimate fetal weight (EFW) using the Hadlock formula. Methods: A descriptive retrospective study in order to establish fetal biometry in the third trimester of pregnancy and incorporated into Hadlock's formula to estimate fetal weight. Four fetal biometry measurements (BPD, HC, AC and FL) were collected from ultrasonography examination results in Raden Mattaher General Hospital. Data were documented using case report form and being tabulated using Microsoft Excel 2011 Version 14.7.0 (161029). All data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0. Results: There were 100 data of pregnant women who underwent fetal biometry ultrasound examinations from February 2021 to April 2023, 100 data samples were obtained that met the criteria for inclusion in the study. The data was distributed based on gestational age from 9 weeks to 41 weeks of gestation. Data on four biometric parameters were collected and calculated using Hadlock formula to obtain an estimate of fetal weight. In the study, it was estimated the weight of the fetus at the 33rd week of pregnancy was 1800 grams, which was in the 10-50 percentile on Hadlock curve. Conclusion: Assessment of fetal biometry is one of the main components of modern prenatal care. Accurate pregnancy dating is essential for further interpretation of both fetal size and growth. Measuring biometrics parameters, including Head Circumference (HC), Biparietal Diameter (BPD), Abdominal Circumference (AC), and Femur Length (FL), and combining them into an estimated fetal weight should be part of the routine ultrasound exam.

Abstract

Background: Multibacillary (MB) leprosy features high bacillary load and an immunoregulatory milieu. Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study enrolled 70 participants (MB = 35; controls = 35). Categorical variables were compared with Chi-square/Fisher’s exact tests; medians with Mann–Whitney U. Spearman’s rank correlations were computed within groups. Results: Age did not differ (p = 0.458 and p = 1.000), whereas occupation and education did (p = 0.038 and p = 0.029). The Bacterial Index (BI) was markedly higher in MB (median 3 [IQR 4]) than controls (0 [0]; p < 0.001). IL-10 levels were higher in MB (1.97 [4.30] pg/mL) versus controls (1.12 [1.96] pg/mL; p = 0.033). In MB, BI correlated positively with IL-10 (ρ = 0.357; p = 0.035). Conclusions: MB patients exhibit substantially higher bacillary burden and elevated IL-10 relative to controls. The positive BI–IL-10 association in MB supports a tolerogenic immune profile linked to bacterial load, while PGE₂ showed limited discriminatory value in this sample. Larger, adjusted studies are warranted to validate these relationships and explore their clinical utility.

Abstract

Introduction: Pregnant women exposed to Secondhand Smoke (SHS) face a high risk of impaired lung function, which is naturally reduced by advancing pregnancy. This study analyzed the effect of SHS exposure on Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR) and its relationship with gestational age and key physiological parameters. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 50 non-smoking pregnant women (Trimester II and III) exposed to SHS in Jambi City. PEFR was measured using a Peak Flow Meter. Statistical analysis used Pearson correlation and Chi-square tests (p<0.05). Results: All respondents (100%) showed significantly lower actual PEFR than predicted values, confirming a universal decline in lung function. A significant association was found between gestational age and PEFR (p<0.05), with the third trimester group having the most pronounced decrease (<320 L/minute). PEFR was not significantly correlated with blood glucose (r=0.089), hemoglobin (r=0.125), or SpO2 (r=0.153). Conclusion: Decreased PEFR in pregnant women exposed to SHS is primarily linked to mechanical limitations from late gestational age, not metabolic or oxygen-carrying disturbances. Prevention of SHS exposure is crucial for maternal respiratory health.

Abstract

Background: Color vision deficiency (CVD) is a hereditary visual disorder that limits color discrimination and may affect daily functioning, learning performance, and psychosocial well-being. Despite its prevalence, awareness and screening among students in Indonesia remain low. Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted among 672 high school students selected through a cluster random sampling method. Color vision was evaluated using the Ishihara 38 Plates test, and quality of life was assessed using the Color Blindness Quality of Life (CBQoL) questionnaire, covering health, emotional, and daily activity domains. Data were analyzed using independent t-tests. Results: Of 672 participants, 24 (3.6%) had CVD, predominantly males (91.7%). The deutan type was the most frequent (75%). Students with CVD showed significantly lower CBQoL scores than those with normal color vision in health (3.50 ± 1.11 vs. 5.49 ± 0.54), emotional (3.64 ± 1.13 vs. 5.78 ± 0.35), and daily activity domains (3.71 ± 1.27 vs. 5.72 ± 0.45; p < 0.001). Conclusion: CVD significantly reduces students' quality of life. Early detection, educational adaptation, and awareness programs are essential in supporting students affected by these issues and promoting inclusive learning environments.

Abstract

Background: HIV/AIDS remains a major public health challenge worldwide, and treatment adherence continues to be a critical factor in achieving effective viral suppression. Knowledge about HIV prevention plays a vital role in shaping health behaviors and promoting adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART). This study aimed to analyze the association between knowledge of HIV prevention and treatment adherence among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) using a social epidemiology framework. Methods: A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted among 101 PLWHA receiving ART in public health centers and clinics. Data were collected through structured questionnaires covering demographic characteristics, knowledge of HIV prevention, and treatment adherence, verified with medical records. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Chi-square test (α = .05) to assess the relationship between knowledge and adherence levels. Results: The majority of respondents were male (82.2%) and had completed secondary education (66.3%). Most participants demonstrated fair to good levels of HIV prevention knowledge; however, adherence levels varied. The Chi-square test revealed a highly significant association between knowledge and treatment adherence, χ²(4) = 202, p < .001, indicating that higher knowledge was strongly correlated with improved adherence. Conclusion: The findings emphasize that knowledge enhancement significantly improves ART adherence and contributes to the control of HIV/AIDS. Strengthening education programs, peer support, and community engagement are essential strategies to foster sustainable adherence and align national efforts with global HIV prevention targets.
