Abstract

Spreadsheet programs are enormously flexible, familiar, and relatively easy to use. Commonly, spreadsheets are used in business, technique, and education. Spreadsheets are widely used in various disciplines of education to simulate phenomena in order to solve problems. In traditional simulation using spreadsheet, the students asked to change certain parameters to visualize a mathematical relationship to get the concept. Consequently, students become passive in the learning process in classroom. Whereas, in science, the students just not only need to understand the concept, they also expected to know how to get the concept. It is argued in this paper that spreadsheets could also be used to enable students to learn scientific methods, including: the importance of model building, the relationships among variables in a model or models, and how to use a model to predict outcomes. By using a constructivist approach, students asked to make a supposition and test it using spreadsheet. The students could be required to investigate an open-ended problem with the help of hand out. Based on this research, it can be concluded that students motivated to participate in the class. Besides that, students can learn more in depth used scientific methods.

A class in a teaching process has significant role, and also a teacher or a lecturer should manage the class well to get a best teaching process. This teaching process needs an attention to gain the aims of teaching process. So that, to manage the class well regulated, the teacher or lecturer have to do the research lesson (collaborative learning lesson study) to accommodate the factual problems of the class and students. This research will find out the factual problems of language classes, how to build a factual strategy of collaborative learning through lesson study, especially English Class, Arabic Class, and Chinese Class. The dominant factual problems in the language classes will be collected and then analyzed to find the meeting point among the foreign language classes. Thus, the language teachers or lecturers will work together and discuss about solution of problems in the language classroom, and then they should avoid the problems that appear in the class. This research will give some recomendations what should the teacher manage in the language class (Arabic, English, and Chinese Class). The teachers of foreign language can improve the quality of learning and make stronger collegiality among the language teachers. The data in this research will be analyzed by the qualitative method, descriptive analysis. To get the data accurately, the data was taken from the videos and pictures which had been captured during the English Class, Arabic Class, and Chinese Class in the Faculty of Cultural Science (FIB UNS). The result from this research is every single class has a problem with a unique character. This unique character is caused by the divison of language class into a theoritical class and a skill analysis class, such as: conversation class, listening class, writing or composition class, and reading class in English, Arabic and Chinese Language.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to find out the profile and the student’s understanding about science process skill of Elementary School Teacher Study Program (Prodi PGSD), Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Distance Learning Business Unit Open University (UPBJJ-UT Surakarta). The study used a survey method by spreading questionnaire to 65 students who join Science Lab Courses in April 2015. The Result of the study shows that the students’ profiles of PGSD program dominated by female and non-science graduates who work as non-civil servant teachers with 1-10 year job experience. Most of them have practical learningexperience but they have low understanding to the lab tools and materials. Students assume that the lab kits and modules that are used on the lesson are difficult to be understood. They also know the model of learning and assessed aspects in the study. The result of science process skill measurement shows on medium category. Based on the result mentioned above, it is necessary to conduct further research by using models and instructional media which are able to optimize the students’ science process skills.

Abstract

The interest of teaching English to young learners increased rapidly since the language has significant influence in the modern world. English is strongly associated with social and economic power in globalization’s context. Introducing English earlier offers opportunities to awaken the learners’ enthusiasm and curiosity about the language, to achieve native-like accent, and to enable them to learn the language easily at further levels. However, there are controversies, particularly, about the age to start learning a new language. In Indonesia, English roles as a foreign language and the government have set up the policy to introduce English to students at elementary school. In order to support the language learning, parent involvement is extremely important to help the children learn and acquire the language. This study explores parents’ perspectives toward English language teaching to young learners and further looks at their involvement in supporting their children learning the foreign language at home. An in-depth interview was conducted to parents with different educational backgrounds, professions, incomes, and gender groups in Langsa, Aceh province, Indonesia. Result revealed that parents have very positive attitude towards the language teaching to young learners. They enthusiastically support their children by helping them doing assignments, memorizing the vocabulary, providing learning medias such as English books, vocabulary pictures, English cartoon’s films, puzzles, and asking teachers the topic they do not understand from their children’s textbook. Lower education and lower income parents showed more enthusiasm in supporting their children.

Abstract

Story problem is the type of math problems presented by the media of language and story. This study was done to identify the type of discourse structure of the story problem in mathematics textbooks for low-grade student in primary school. The focus of study is viewed from the number of components and the type of the integration of those components. There are three components in the story problems, namely introduction, events, and question component. Nine mathematics textbooks of 1th, 2nd, and 3rd were taken as sample with three books for each grade. The study result about the number of components composing story problems also shows that most of story problems for primary one, two, and three-grade consist of three components. The others are story problems with only two components by omitting the first component which is the introduction component. Viewed from the components integration type, result shows that story problems components that are combined for primary two and three are the introduction and events components or the events and question components. The integration between introduction component and events component is indicated by the conjunction “and”, “while/whereas”, and a comma. The integration between events and question component is indicated by the conjunction “if”. It will all produce complex sentences. The conclusion of this study is that, viewed from their discourse structure, most story problems for primary one and two students are relatively shorter than three, by omitting the setting and character element in introduction. It implies that there is no introduction part to introduce the context or narrative elements whose function is to connect the real world and mathematics.

Abstract

Attempts at introducing Indonesian tourism attractions to the world are often hindered by the lack of ability to provide proper information. This problem is apparent in regional tourism offices, like Banyumas Regency’s, where the personnel are usually not highly trained in English. Therefore, a research was conducted to identify the ability of Banyumas tourism office staff in writing descriptive texts and to investigate whether applying internet-based writing course to the staff can improve the ability. This research is experimental in which a group of Banyumas tourism office staff participated. The group got a treatment, i.e. writing course blended with internet as a medium of writing. Pre-test and post-test were conducted to compare the level of writing ability before and after the experiment. Observations, interviews and questionnaire were also employed to obtain data. The results show that the participants’ ability in writing descriptive texts before the treatment is average. The common problems found were wrong choice of words, incorrect sentence structures, insufficient topic sentences and poor cohesion and coherence within the paragraphs. Comparison between pre-test and post-test indicated that the writing ability of the respondents increased by 30 % in general. Further analysis to the supporting data revealed that the increase is highly attributed to the use of references on the internet, and higher motivation and awareness in writing and revising drafts as they were publicized on-line.
