Abstract

Human-elephant conflict is one of main issues in wildlife conservation. The trigger of human-elephant conflict is forest convertion in Tesso Nilo National Park. A study about characteristic of human elephant conflict has been conducted from March until April 2016 in some area of the park including Lubuk Kembang Bunga and Air Hitam villages, Riau Province, Indonesia. This study aimed to describe the characteristics of dispute area have been and land use in the park. A survey and interview have been conducted to 30 local inhibitans. Lubuk Kembang Bunga and Air hitam villageswere located near by the elephant forest habitat (0-10 km) with elevation 0f 200-100 m above the sea level. The area mostly flat and close to rivers. The elephant attack palm oil and rubber plantation. Historical change of land use at Tesso Nilo National Park from 2004 to 2016 has proved to damaged the elephant habitat, while the elephants come to the plantation where they had ranged in the past time.

Abstract

The leaf of “Ketapang” (Terminalia catappa L.) can be used as traditional medicine. The use of natural material is generally considered to be safer and has less side effect as compared to the use of modern medicine. This study aims at analysing the early elucidation of resistor property of the ethanol extract of the “ketapang” leaf against the growth of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923 as the cause of gingivitis, and to identify the active compound contained in the “ketapang” leaf. This study uses Complete Random Design (RAL) with 7 treatments of the extract concentration of “ketapang” leaf namely concentration of 1%, 2%,3%, 4%, 5%, positive control (chlorexidine) and negative control (ethanol). The discovery of the resistor efficacy of “ketapang” leaf extract against S. aureus bacteria using Kirby Beuer method has been indicated by the development of clear zone as the result of the application of anti-bacteria compound which is diffused in bacteria growth media. The finding of the study shows that the higher the concentration of the extract (5%), the wider the development of the zone of the resistor area. The effectiveness value of the anti-bacteria of “ketapang” leaf extract is not better than the antiseptic being tested. The result of profile test of phytochemical test shows that the extract of “ketapang” leaf contains tannin, saponin, terpenoid and flavonoid. The result of GC-MS test, it has been identified five compounds being contained in fraction IV namely Alpha Terpinolene, Cyclohexanol 5-methyl, Hexadecanoic acid, Octadecanoic acid, 1.2Benzenedicarboxylic acid. five active compounds that we found have the potentials of functioning as anti-bacteria.

Abstract

Constipation is a symptom of a problematic, non-smooth and irregular defecation process. While laxative is a substance that stimulates intestinal peristalsis as a reflex of direct stimulation of the intestinal wall that can cause or facilitate defecation. This study aimed to determine the ethanol extract of the leaves of Gynura procumbens (L.) Merr. effect as a laxative in white male mice induced by loperamide. The methods used for laxative testing are defecation patterns and intestinal transit methods. The parameters observed included frequency of defecation, stool consistency, stool weight every 30 minutes for 4 hours, and the length of the activated carbon in the mice's intestine. The extract was administered orally at a dose of 75 mg/kg BW, 150 mg/kg BW and 300 mg/kg BW, as a comparison used negative control (Na CMC). From the results of the study, it was found that the administration of ethanol extracts of Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr. leaves at the dose of 150 mg/kg BW gave laxative activity to white male mice (P <0.05).

Abstract

Indonesia has programmed units of biogas as an energy producer. By-products such as organic sludge. Liquid separation of organic sludge biogas unit will be the terrestrial and aquatic plant fertilizer. Water plant that uses a liquid organic sludge biogas unit (LOSBGU) using vegetable decomposer were expected to be a very good influence on the increase of alga cells. The results showed that the addition of vegetable LOSBGU and decomposers in the media for 12 days alga could produce alga cells very significantly, however, its interaction was not significant. It was concluded that the addition of vegetable LOSBGU and decomposers in alga was very good media to enhance cell growth and its multiplication was also quite high. As suggestion, the use of  LOSBGU is needed to increase the production of alga.

Abstract

Moringa is a plant whose leaf are commonly consumed as vegetables and now moringa leaves are also used as tea and additives in cakes. The results of the study on moringa are still controversial, on the one hand saying moringa can improve the quality of spermatozoa and on the other hand say it can inhibit fertility. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of moringa leaf steeping on the concentration of spermatozoa and epithelial thickness of seminiferous tubules. A male rat with as many as 24 with weighing 200 g were divided into four treatments namely control (P0), 18 mg / kg BB (P1), 36 mg / kg BB (P2) and 72 mg / kg BB (P3) for 30 days. The results showed that moringa leaves steeping had a significant effect by decreasing the concentration of spermatozoa (P?0.05), moringa leaf steeping has no effect on the epithelial thickness of the seminiferous tubules but causes the germinal epithelium to become loose because many epithelium is loose.
