Abstract

Digital storytelling merges traditional storytelling with digital media, creating short films that blend photos, text, video clips, animations, and music using computer-based tools. This narrative research study examines the experiences of students utilizing digital storytelling to enhance their English learning journey. Employing qualitative methods and narrative inquiry, the study conducted semi-structured interviews with a fourth-semester student from the English Letters Department of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan. The narrative inquiry ensured accurate and consistent data recording. The findings highlight the participant’s early exposure to English through songs and movies, which laid a foundational understanding of the language. The study reveals that digital storytelling is a multifaceted learning medium. The participant engaged with English content on platforms like the BBC website, significantly improving his language skills. Creating his own digital stories further honed his speaking, listening, vocabulary, and writing abilities. Crafting scripts for digital storytelling particularly advanced his creative storytelling skills. Moreover, the study sheds light on the participant’s challenges and successes with digital storytelling. One notable challenge was understanding native speakers’ speech, which differed from the non-native speaker's pronunciation typically taught in schools. However, the interactive nature of digital storytelling provided an engaging and effective way to enhance language skills, surpassing traditional learning methods.

Abstract

Despite numerous studies on teacher’s agency and self-efficacy, little attention has been given to examining how teachers’ agency manifests in the use of artificial intelligence and how it influences teachers’ self-efficacy. Teachers as active agents are demanded to effectively and independently exercise their digital agency in teaching. In essence, teacher’s agency allows them to make informed choices about using artificial intelligence to promote their teaching, which might influence their perceptions of their self-efficacy. Thus, this study aims to fill the gap by examining how EFL teachers’ agency manifests in the utilization of AI tools and how they perceive their self-efficacy. Employing a qualitative study, this research employed open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews to gather the data. Five EFL teachers who have used artificial intelligence in their teaching participated in this study. To analyze the data, the researcher employed selective coding. The data revealed two teacher agency drove three participants to use artificial intelligence in three parts namely lesson planning, implementation, and assessment, and the other two participants used it for lesson planning and assessment. Furthermore, this study found that the five participants perceived high self-efficacy towards their use of artificial intelligence. Thus, schools and teacher educational programs should provide targeted professional development programs that emphasize the importance of teacher agency. In particular, training should focus on how teachers can utilize artificial intelligence tools to enhance their pedagogical practices that contribute to building high self-efficacy.

Abstract

This study aims to delineate the categories of assertive illocutionary acts that are present in the state speech of President Joe Biden. Searle's (1979) classification of illocutionary acts was implemented by the researcher in this study. The data analyzed in this research is qualitative descriptive, as the results may be presented in the form of sentences or words. President Joe Biden's 2024 State of the Union Address and assertive illocutionary acts serve as the focus of this study. From the data sources of this research, the researcher was able to identify five distinct classifications of assertive illocutionary acts. This research found 51 data of assertive illocutionary acts in President Joe Biden’s state speech. In addition, the most dominant classification of assertives that was found in the data source is informing with 20 (39,21%) occurrences followed by stating with 14 (27,45%) occurrences, asserting with 11 (21,56%), boasting with 4 (7,84%). The least dominant types of assertive illocutionary act that was found namely; complaining with 2 (3,92%) occurrences. The Informing type is said to be the most dominant because speakers provide information to their listeners more often than conveying ordinary things. Additionally, the speaker's meaning has been interpreted in accordance with the circumstances in which the utterance was delivered. Additional advantages of this research include the enhancement of listeners' confidence and enthusiasm for the speaker.

The data were statistically analyzed using the t-counted formula with degrees of freedom (df) = Nx + Ny - 2 = 28 +28 - 2 = 54. The analysis results show that the t-counted value is 2.358 while the t-table value is 1.674. It means that the t-counted is higher than the t-table. It can be interpreted that the hypothesis was accepted. Therefore, pictionary game can improve vocabulary of the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Sigi. The instrument in collecting data was test (pre-test and post-test). The results of this study show that there is a significant difference in the increase in students' listening after being taught through the Spotify application. Data analysis shows that the tcounted (7,216) is higher than ttable (1,670) by applying a significance level of 0.05 with degrees of freedom (df) = 62. This means that the hypothesis is accepted. So, it can be said that Spotify can develop the students’ listening comprehension in learning English at SMA Negeri 2 Palu.
