Abstract

This study investigated the self-regulated learning (SRL) practices of undergraduate students during their Skripsi completion in the English Education Department. A quantitative survey design was employed, involving 64 students who were actively engaged in their Skripsi. Data were collected through a closed-ended questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics through JASP software. The results revealed that the “Resources Management” and “Motivational Components” were the most frequently utilized SRL strategies, while “Cognitive Components” ranked the lowest, indicating potential areas for improvement. Self-regulated learning strategies such as “Evaluation” and “Set Self-Consequences” were predominant, emphasizing reflection and goal-setting, while “Organizing and Transforming,” “Keeping Records and Monitoring,” and “Seeking Assistance from the Academic Community” were less frequently utilized, suggesting a need for enhanced organizational and collaborative skills. These findings contribute to the understanding of SRL practices and offer implications for educators to leverage student success in academic achievement.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between scholastic potential and English literacy skills of grade XII students of Islamic-based schools in Palopo City. This research is based on the phenomenon of the low graduation rate of students from Islamic-based schools compared to public schools in the selection process for entering state universities. This is an ex post facto research. The research population was all grade XII students of Islamic-based schools in Palopo City. Based on the proportionated stratified random sampling technique, a sample of 206 students was taken from five schools, namely MAN Palopo, SMA Datuk Sulaiman, SMAIT Wahdah Islamiyah, SMA Muhammadiyah, and SMAIT Insan Madani. Data collection was done by giving tests. The data analysis techniques used were descriptive analysis and correspondence analysis. Based on the results of the analysis, scholastic potential and English literacy skills of grade XII students of Islamic-based schools in Palopo City are still low. Scholastic potential has a significant relationship with English literacy skills. Students who have good scholastic potential also have good or even excellent English literacy skills. Students with excellent scholastic potential tend to have English literacy skills at a sufficient level. Meanwhile, students whose scholastic potential is in the sufficient and poor categories also tend to have poor English literacy skills. Therefore, intensive assistance is needed in order to improve students' capabilities in facing university entrance examinations, especially in the scholastic potential and English literacy subtests.

Abstract

This study focuses on the need for effective learning media in teaching listening skills in speech texts at the junior high school level. This article aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of learning media based on the Articulate Storyline in improving students' ability to listen to speech texts. The research method used is research and development with a one-group pretest-posttest design. Data were collected through pretests and posttests, followed by normality tests and paired sample t-tests to evaluate the significance of the results. The results showed that the Articulate Storyline media that had been improved based on expert input proved effective, with a significant increase in student learning outcomes from pretest to posttest. The normality test confirmed the normal distribution of the data, and the paired sample T-test showed a substantial difference between the pretest and posttest, supporting the hypothesis that this medium positively impacts students' ability to listen to speech texts. This study concludes that the Articulate Storyline media is an effective and useful learning tool for improving the listening skills of speech texts in junior high school students.

Abstract

This study explores gender representation in Indonesian English Language Teaching (ELT) textbooks for Junior High School under the Merdeka Curriculum, employing a corpus-assisted Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach. The research identifies gender-related references and analyzes positive and negative character constructions. The findings indicate a persistent gender imbalance, with male references appearing more frequently than female references in categories such as famous names, fictional names, ordinary names, and pronouns. Male characters are often portrayed with a mix of positive and negative traits, while female characters are predominantly depicted in a positive light. The study concludes that while progress has been made, there is still a significant need for more balanced and inclusive gender representation in educational materials. Addressing these imbalances is crucial for creating an equitable learning environment that reflects and promotes gender equality.

Abstract

A cognitive diagnostic assessment is a process of gathering information to identify students' strengths and weaknesses in cognitive aspects. In the context of teaching personal letter writing in elementary school, a cognitive diagnostic assessment can help teachers understand students' initial comprehension of the structure and elements of personal letters. The purpose of this research is to determine students' abilities in critical thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving, as well as to assess their readiness for learning. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study method to explore how teachers implement, evaluate, and assess the outcomes of cognitive diagnostic assessments in teaching personal letter writing at SD Batanghari. The study reveals that cognitive diagnostic assessments can assist teachers in achieving the desired learning objectives and enhance teachers' insights regarding diagnostic assessments. The findings also indicate that cognitive diagnostic assessments can be used to map students' learning needs based on their learning styles, interests, and skills. Cognitive diagnostic assessments in teaching personal letter writing in elementary school play a crucial role in ensuring that students can complete tasks well and achieve the expected learning goals. Thus, this research contributes to the development of cognitive assessments that are aligned with the core material and can improve students' problem-solving abilities in elementary school.
