Abstract

This article examines the complexities surrounding the construction and understanding of gender justice for women victims of sexual violence who are overlooked by the state. Addressing the need for justice for these victims is vital, as women frequently face discriminatory treatment that can lead to victim-blaming. The study uses a qualitative, phenomenological approach based on Creswell's framework, emphasizing the interpretation of 'Gender Justice' through the experiences of key informants, which highlight varied perspectives influenced by their life experiences. The research primarily incorporates Gender and Feminism Theory and Gender Justice to analyze the issue. Key findings reveal a lack of empathy and insufficient training among law enforcement regarding sexual violence cases, along with stigma and intimidation from officers, coupled with inadequate legal protections for victims. Additionally, the legal bureaucracy is convoluted and unresponsive, making the current legal system ineffective in achieving gender justice and often neglecting the rights and needs of sexual violence survivors. These results indicate that the existing legal and governmental frameworks fail to provide equitable gender justice, often overlooking the requirements and rights of survivors. Legal certainty should be clear and consistent; however, in reality, victims often do not experience this certainty. The injustices faced by survivors stem not only from legal shortcomings but also from entrenched discriminatory and patriarchal social norms.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the contributions of women in Melati I Village, Perbaungan District, who engage in trade to support their family economy. The objective was to examine how these women manage the dual roles of working while maintaining their household responsibilities. A qualitative research methodology was employed, with data collected through semi-structured interviews involving five respondents. The findings indicated that women worked for a variety of reasons, including self-development, social engagement, and economic necessity. Their participation in work had a positive impact on the family's financial stability, but also posed challenges, particularly in balancing time between work, family, and community obligations. The study revealed that despite the difficulties, women were able to manage these dual roles through strategies such as open communication with their husbands, maintaining a balance between their domestic and public responsibilities, and ensuring that their work aligned with Islamic values, which emphasize the preservation of their honor and fulfillment of household duties. The research concluded that with the right strategies, women could make significant contributions to the family economy without compromising family relationships or societal values. These findings underscore the importance of further empowering women in the family economy to enhance their potential in strengthening family economic resilience.

Abstract

Nomophobia has become a prevalent issue which affects individuals today. This leads many to feel constantly connected to their devices. The term, derived from "No Mobile Phone Phobia," describes an excessive reliance on gadgets. This psychological condition is recognized as a global psychosocial phenomenon that influences mobile phone users and affects their morals and behavior. Alarmingly, this issue has also emerged among young children, with many preschoolers showing signs of addiction. This study is aimed at exploring the effects of nomophobia on early childhood, focusing on its moral and behavioral consequences in daily life. The study employed a qualitative case study approach and it involved two 5-year-old children. Data were collected through observations and unstructured interviews with their parents. The findings indicated that excessive gadget used in early childhood could significantly alter children's morals and behaviors. This was primarily due to insufficient parental supervision of their app usage. The study emphasized the need for intervention from adults, including both parents and teachers, who are the closest guardians to children in monitoring smartphone usage. These collaborative preventive measures to monitor and mitigate the negative impacts of smartphone usage are important to do. Future studies for exploring nomophobia in early childhood contexts are encouraged to delve deeper into the surrounding events and circumstances that affect children.
Gender equality in the Qur’an: An Analysis of surah an-Nisa’ verses 1 and 34 in the exegesis of al-Tabari and al-Rāzī Ismail, Nurjannah; Firdaus, Muhammad; Darmawijaya, Edi

Abstract

Surah An-Nisa' verses 1 and 34 have been central to discussions on gender. According to the interpretations of Imam al-Ṭabarī and Imam al-Rāzī, these verses place women in a subordinate role, both in domestic and non-domestic spheres. This interpretation is considered biased, not reflecting the true essence of the Qur'an. Therefore, further research is necessary to uncover the Qur'an’s intended view on gender in these verses. The study uses a descriptive-analytical method with a qualitative approach, gathering data from books, theses, and articles. The findings reveal that al-Ṭabarī and al-Rāzī's interpretations reinforce male superiority in patriarchal tradition, stating that Eve was created from Adam's rib and that the husband is the absolute leader of the wife. However, contemporary scholars argue that interpreting "nafs" as referring to the unity of humanity without any connotation of gender superiority, emphasizing equality in Islam. The Qur'an advocates for justice in gender issues, making traditional interpretations obsolete in today's context. Regarding Surah An-Nisa' verse 34, al-Ṭabarī and al-Rāzī interpreted men as the rightful leaders over their wives due to the advantages given by Allah, with financial responsibility as the foundation of their authority. However, modern-contemporary tafsir scholars reject this view, interpreting qiwāmah as shared responsibility regardless of gender, emphasizing partnership in the household and gender equality in Islam. This reflects efforts to understand Qur'anic verses contextually and inclusively, supporting the principles of equality and justice.

Abstract

The desire for a white and smooth face is not only a woman's need, but has become a man's need as well. This new phenomenon is influenced by the globalization of the Korean wave, which has created contemporary cultural standards. Such as the increased need for facial skin care products among men. Therefore, this paper discusses how the development of the Korean Wave affects men's skincare needs that are provided through Instagram. It even leads to the emergence of a new hyperreality that replaces the previous cultural standard. Hyperreality is the result of postmodernism, which makes the role of media a source of new human needs. The preparation of this paper is through the netnography method and literature review. The netnography method itself is a development of ethnography that uses Internet media to find information and connect with informants. Netnography helps research to examine social phenomena that appear in the Internet world, and has special methods in interviewing and validating information data obtained from Internet media. This paper shows that Somethinc's local product is a symbol of hyperreality that shifts the special needs of one gender to a common need raised by the globalization of the Korean Wave at this time. The new standards of life brought by the media show that the media has penetrated human life. It has even become a new standard or a standard for the continuation of life.

Abstract

This article examines masculinity, gender roles, and power relations in Indonesian society through Taylor Swift’s song “The Man”. The lyrics and music video, which criticise the demands and double standards that society places on women in comparison to males, provide a framework for analysing related problems in Indonesia, a country where traditional gender roles are ingrained in the fabric of culture. The qualitative content analysis was employed to systematically evaluate the content of “The Man” within various forms of communication, such as texts, images, and videos. The analysis sheds light on the social forces that influence gender performance and the maintenance of male dominance, highlighting how Swift’s critique of gendered power inequalities may be utilised to comprehend the intricacies of masculinity and femininity in Indonesia. The article also highlights the idea of gender performance, taking into account how people in Indonesia either comply with or defy these social norms. Swift’s depiction of a society in which people would view her activities differently if she were a man is reminiscent of the experiences of numerous Indonesian women in both public and private settings. The article then concludes how these gendered expectations reinforce power relations and maintain disparities that most likely benefit men.

Abstract

In Banda Aceh, it is common to see children who are not yet of working age selling in cafes and at traffic lights. Their working hours exceed 3 hours a day, and the work they do can threaten safety and interfere with children’s education, which is in conflict with law number 13 concerning employment. This study aims to determine stakeholder participation in handling child labor in Banda Aceh City. Employing qualitative research methods with a descriptive framework, researchers identified multiple actions undertaken by stakeholders in addressing child labor in Banda Aceh City. First, the Banda Aceh City Social Service has the authority to provide guidance to child workers. Second, DP3AP2KB Banda Aceh City has the authority to prevent and handle violence against children. Third, the UPTD PPA Banda Aceh City has the authority to respond quickly and is psychoeducational to child victims of violence. Fourth, Banda Aceh City Satpol PP and WH have the authority to supervise, control, and safeguard child workers to maximize public order and community security. Furthermore, the challenges in handling child labor in the City of Banda Aceh are: 1) the behavior of people who easily feel pity; 2) the behavior of child workers who are used to working on the streets; 3) the limited authority of the government; 4) weak applicable laws and no special regulations regarding child labor.

Abstract

The main objective of the research is to find out the risk of sexual harassment of persons with disabilities in Makassar City from the perspective of Islamic Law. This type of research is qualitative research (field research), with the research approach being theological-normative, sociological, and juridical. Primary data sources were eight subjects. The subjects were five women with disabilities, a psychologist, two social workers, and a religious figure. The secondary data is obtained through books, journal articles, government data, laws, fatwas, and research reports by utilizing libraries, online databases, and websites of related institutions. The data collection methods used are observation, interviews, documentation, and reference searches. Data processing and analysis techniques are carried out in three stages: data reduction, presentation/display, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study show, from an Islamic law perspective, that the protection of women with disabilities is supported by principles such as human dignity (al-Karāmah al-Insāniyah), equality (al-Musawah), justice (al-'Adalah), and freedom (al-Hurriyah). Islam underscores the importance of safeguarding and respecting the rights of all individuals, including those with disabilities. Islamic sanctions for sexual harassment can range from ta'zir (discretionary punishments) to had (prescribed punishments), depending on the severity of the offense. These Islamic principles align with human rights standards and provide a foundation for fostering a more equitable and secure environment for women with disabilities. The research implications include the development of an Islamic law-based protection system, raising social awareness, and establishing a support network to create a safe environment for women with disabilities.

Abstract

The phenomenon of pink tax is a gender inequality issue that discriminates women in the purchase of goods or services by producers. The objective of this research is to identify the pink tax phenomenon in Indonesia, encompassing its existence, influencing factors, and the urgency of the related issue. Additionally, this study aims to analyse the role of the government through policies regarding the emergence of the pink tax phenomenon. Policies closely associated with the pink tax include Law Number 8 of 1999 on Consumer Protection, Law Number 5 of 1999 on the Prohibition of Monopoly Practices and Unfair Business Competition, and Law Number 7 of 2014 on Trade. The research methodology employed in this study is qualitative, involving literature review, documentary analysis, and interviews. The findings of this research indicate that the pink tax exists in Indonesia, yet awareness of this issue is not evenly distributed across all layers of society. While some institutions have acknowledged the existence of this problem, there have been no concrete steps taken to reduce or address this gender-based price discrimination. Furthermore, current policies are deemed inadequate in addressing gender-based price discrimination practices and protect women’s consumer. This is attributed to the fact that gender equality elements are not fully encompassed in the existing policies.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the experiences of sexual harassment victims in accessing counseling services at higher education institutions in Samarinda. The research addresses a gap in the literature, as most previous studies have focused more on the legal, sociological, and psychological aspects of sexual harassment but have not deeply explored the experiences of victims in accessing counseling services at the university level. This qualitative phenomenological research employed the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach. The participants consisted of four sexual harassment victims from two universities, one public and one religious-based institution. The findings of this study identified three main barriers. First, a lack of information regarding the counseling services available on campus led to delays in seeking help by the victims. Second, feelings of shame prevented victims from accessing counseling services as they were reluctant to share their traumatic experiences. This sense of shame was often exacerbated by fear of being blamed or perceived as overreacting by others, causing victims to keep their experiences to themselves. Third, the fear of social and academic stigma, including concerns about negative judgment from peers and lecturers, particularly if the perpetrator was a faculty member, became a significant obstacle for victims seeking help. Some victims even expressed concerns about the impact on their academic achievements if the incident became public. The study emphasizes the importance of policies that ensure easy access and clear information about counseling services, as well as efforts to reduce stigma, to encourage victims to seek help.
