Abstract

This study examines how digital da'wah spaces on Instagram shape the social construction of marriage among Indonesian Muslim netizens. Drawing on Berger and Luckmann's theory of the social construction of reality, this study analyzes how the competing hashtags #MarriageIsScary and #MarriageIsNotScary function as informal Islamic communication (tabligh) channels that negotiate new meanings of marriage in the digital public sphere. Data were collected from 10 prominent influencer accounts and 1,000 netizen comments using a netnographic approach, then analyzed through Voyant Tools over the period of October 2025 to April 2026. The findings reveal two divergent discursive positions: the #MarriageIsScary discourse frames marriage as a high-risk institution that is no longer an obligatory life milestone, while the #MarriageIsNotScary discourse reframes marriage as a deliberate and selective life choice grounded in personal readiness and spiritual maturity. Despite their opposing stances, both discourses converge on shared values of self-governance, mental health, and individual happiness — reflecting a broader shift in how young Indonesian Muslims negotiate Islamic family ideals against contemporary social pressures. This study concludes that Instagram has emerged as a significant informal da'wah platform where Islamic values related to marriage and family are publicly contested, reinterpreted, and disseminated. The findings carry practical implications for Islamic counseling (irsyad) practitioners and da'wah communicators in addressing shifting marital attitudes among the younger Muslim generation.

Abstract

This study examines the construction of da'i credibility and the negotiation of religious authority in Habib Jindan's digital da'wah practices on Instagram. Grounded in Hovland's credibility theory, digital religious authority theory, and the framework of Islamic da'wah elements, this qualitative research employs content analysis of 20 selected posts from the Instagram account @alhabibjindan, which has approximately 1.3 million followers. Data were collected through non-participant observation of content, captions, and audience comments. The analysis focuses on three dimensions of credibility: trustworthiness, expertise, and attractiveness. The findings show that Habib Jindan constructs digital credibility through consistent religious messages, transparent identity representation, contextual Islamic explanations, empathetic communication styles, and symbolic religious visualizations. Trustworthiness is reflected in the consistency between messages and practices, expertise appears through the use of Qur'anic and hadith references contextualized to contemporary issues, while attractiveness is built through humanistic language, emotional engagement, and authentic visual presentation. This study also finds that the adaptation of traditional habaib authority into Instagram's platform logic creates a negotiation between religious depth and digital accessibility. Religious authority is influenced not only by sanad and scholarly recognition, but also by digital symbolic capital such as followers and engagement. Theoretically, this research contributes to digital da'wah studies through the concept of da'i credibility construction, while practically offering insights for developing adaptive and ethical da'wah strategies in social media environments.

Abstract

Semarang is sociologically populated by a Muslim majority, but geopolitically, historically, it is known as a strong base for the nationalist group (PDIP). This unique contradiction demands that political actors formulate adaptive campaign strategies for the 2024 Semarang mayoral election. This study aims to analyze the winning strategies implemented by candidates to capture Muslim voters without negating the nationalist cultural identity of Semarang residents. This study aims to analyze the campaign methods and strategies that significantly influenced the victory in the 2024 local election in Semarang City. This research employs a qualitative approach with Semarang City as the research locus. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. The collected data were analyzed using the interactive analysis model proposed by Miles and Huberman, which consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the victory of Agustina-Iswar was influenced by several key factors, including the strength of political party machinery, the candidate’s personal figure and political charisma, support from volunteers and the community, direct engagement activities with the public such as market visits, group exercise activities, and visits to micro, small, and medium enterprises, outreach and relationship-building with Islamic religious leaders (kiai and ulama) in Semarang City, as well as pro-people policy programs, such as the provision of operational assistance amounting to IDR 25 million per neighborhood unit (RT) per year.

Abstract

The Hajj pilgrimage functions as the world’s largest laboratory of religious moderation, yet empirical evidence reveals a significant paradox: highly educated pilgrims (bachelor’s degree holders) and civil servants demonstrate greater resistance to religious moderation than other groups. This study aims to reconstruct da’wah management within the Hajj manasik (ritual guidance) system to develop a more adaptive framework capable of engaging critical groups while preventing tendencies toward ghuluw (religious excessiveness). Employing a qualitative case study approach focused on the 2023 Hajj implementation, data were collected through in-depth interviews with 18 informants comprising Hajj guidance officers, KBIHU (Kelompok Bimbingan Ibadah Haji dan Umrah) administrators, pilgrims, and ulama curriculum consultants, supplemented by participatory observation and documentation analysis. Data were analyzed using Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña’s interactive model. Findings indicate that effective reconstruction of da’wah management entails six strategic dimensions: (1) dialogical andragogy replacing doctrinal instruction; (2) fiqh al-awlawiyat (jurisprudence of priorities) integration into the core curriculum; (3) institutionalization of moderation through KBIHU structures; (4) gender- and occupation-sensitive facilitation approaches; (5) field-level prevention of ghuluw at critical ritual stages; and (6) transformation of guides from lecturers into moderation facilitators. This model serves as a strategic blueprint for Hajj guidance policy standardization toward 2026, demonstrating that effective da’wah management must shift from knowledge transfer toward behavioral engineering through internalization of wasathiyah (moderate) values.

Abstract

The advancement of globalization and the gradual decline in adherence to local cultural values have posed significant challenges to the internalization of Islamic values within society, particularly in Padangsidimpuan. Conventional da'wah approaches that lack contextual sensitivity often result in the ineffective transmission of religion, thereby necessitating strategies that integrate Islamic teachings with local cultural messages wisdom. This study aims to examine the cultural-based da'wah communication approach through Dalihan Na Tolu in strengthening Islamic values within the community. This research adopts a qualitative method with a case study design, employing indepth interviews, observations, and documentation, which are analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The findings indicate that Dalihan Na Tolu serves as an effective communication medium due to its congruence with Islamic values, supported by the influential role of traditional leaders and the use of culturally embedded symbols. Consequently, a culturally grounded da'wah approach is demonstrated to enhance both the acceptance and the internalization of Islamic values in a contextual and sustainable manner.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has transformed Generation Z’s interpersonal communication patterns, particularly through the intensive consumption of short-form digital content. This condition has contributed to the emergence of the brain rot phenomenon, referring to cognitive decline caused by excessive exposure to repetitive and superficial digital content. This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of brain rot among Generation Z and its implications for da’wah communication practices in the digital era, focusing on interpersonal communication dynamics in the Luwu Raya region. This study employed a qualitative method using a descriptive phenomenological approach to explore the experiences, meanings, and communication behaviors of Generation Z. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations involving Generation Z individuals aged 17–28 years who actively use social media platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. Data analysis was conducted using thematic analysis. The findings reveal three major dimensions affected by the brain rot phenomenon: focal power dynamics, empathy level analysis, and response analysis. The study indicates that brain rot contributes to declining communication focus, reduced empathy, superficial interactions, and instant communication patterns, posing challenges to interpersonal da’wah communication, which requires reflective, empathetic, and meaningful dialogue. Therefore, adaptive and contextual da’wah communication strategies are needed to maintain the effectiveness of religious messages among Generation Z in the digital era.
