Abstract

Tourism planning and development should be adjusted based on regional characteristics and applicable policies, but over time, tourism planning often pays less attention to the carrying capacity of the region. So there is a need for an analytical study of tourism planning that is tailored to the characteristics of the region to create sustainable tourism. This research was conducted at the Pelang Regional Tourism Destination, Trenggalek Regency using Recreation Opportunity Spectrum Analysis and the concept of Attractions, Amenities, Access, Ancillary to see tourism potential. The research methodology used is Qualitative Description with the methods of collecting observation data, documentation studies and in-depth interviews. Tourism development in the Pelang Regional Tourism Destinations based on regional tourism development planning is included in the concept of natural tourism development with collaborative management between stakeholders, but in the current development implementation when viewed from the Recreation Opportunity Spectrum analysis there is no clear management system and the Pelang Tourism Destinations are classified as the characteristics of semi-primitive areas have not paid attention to aspects of appropriate land use functions, especially in the development of tourism supporting infrastructure.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the characteristics and patterns of the social network of souvenir traders in the Borobudur Temple Tourism Park and explore the relationship between social networks and the sustainability of the souvenir merchants’ business. In this qualitative study, researchers conducted data collection (observation and in-depth interview) between January 2018 and January 2019 before the COVID-19 outbreak hit the area. Social network data and information from the interview were analyzed and visualized with the Node-XL computer program. Our findings showed that the formation of a social network of souvenir merchants and small traders was based on kinship, friendship, interests, and contractual relationships. The structures that are maintained and developed in the Borobudur Temple Tourism Park area contain interrelated actors. While the relationship between suppliers and merchants is diagonal, the social interaction and network pattern among small traders in the Borobudur Temple Tourism Park is horizontal. Souvenir merchants and small traders in the Borobudur Temple tourism park are always maintaining their social capital to survive in their business. We can learn that each merchant is closely connected with some key fellow merchants and small or medium traders from this pattern. This network and ties among small traders can also determine trust and social capital between actors. Through each small traders’ social network, a business network based on interest, kinship, friendship, and contractual relationships can be unraveled.

Abstract

The contention that Bali has been imagined in the context of tourism and that these images do not necessarily correspond to the realities of the destination is not entirely new. However, what this paper argues is that imaginings have occurred over time and began well before the advent of tourism, before becoming incorporated into a more fully developed and more globally recognised tourism image with many elements of the ‘tourist gaze’. These gazes are not just externally derived, but also owe a lot to local imaginings of what Bali might be, namely the notion that Bali is some kind of heir to the renowned Hindu-Javanese kingdom of Majapahit based in Java. This paper traces the evolution of these images blending earlier reports of seafarers, colonial administrators both Dutch and British, as well as artists who have lived on the island, into the world of the contemporary media-scape.
