Abstract

Introduction. Coagulase Negative Staphylococcus (CoNS) is a bacterial species commonly causing infection in humans upon entrance into bloodstream. Antibiotics remain the therapeutic modality of choice in eradicating CoNS bacteria. Increasing incidence of antimicrobial resistance has made it difficult to administer the right treatment. In addition, CoNS susceptibility patterns differ between regions and with time. This study aimed to determine the susceptibility pattern of CoNS towards various antibiotics in infection patients at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang.  Methods. This study was a descriptive, observational study using the data from blood cultures of CoNS bacteria undergoing antimicrobial susceptibility test (AST) in the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory, and utilizing demographic and clinical data from the Medical Records Installation from July 1, 2021 to December 31, 2021. Results. There were 123 isolates from patient blood cultures which underwent AST. The most frequently identified bacterial species were Staphylococcus hominis ssp hominis, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus haemolyticus, and Staphylococcus saprophyticus. AST results showed that on average, CoNS were susceptible to tigecycline (100%), nitrofurantoin (98.4−100%), linezolid (86.1−100%), and vancomycin (80.6−100%). CoNS were most resistant to benzylpenicillin (100%), oxacillin (85.5−97.2%), and erythromycin (75−97.2%). Conclusion. CoNS were resistant towards several available antibiotics in RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang.

Abstract

Interleukin-17 (IL-17) is involved in the immune response to various infectious diseases. Two isoforms, IL-17A and IL-17F, are well studied and may play an important role in host defence towards tuberculosis. Genetic polymorphisms involving genes coding for these IL-17 isoforms may influence the function of this cytokine, hence affecting an individual’s susceptibility to tuberculosis infection. This narrative review discusses the role of several single-nucleotide polymorphisms involving IL-17A and IL-17F in tuberculosis susceptibility. Several SNPs, including rs2275913 and rs8193036 of the IL-17A gene and rs763780 of the IL-17F gene influence the immune response mediated by IL-17 to tuberculosis through different ways. The rs2275913 and rs8193036 SNPs are located in the promoter of the IL-17A gene, altering the expression of the gene by regulating the binding of transcription factors. Meanwhile, the rs763780 SNP is located in the coding region of the IL-17F gene, resulting in an amino acid substitution that affects the function of expressed IL-17. Future studies may elaborate the interactions of these SNPs with related polymorphisms in a haplotype-based approach, as well as their roles against infection of different Mycobacterium tuberculosis lineages.

Abstract

Introduction. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a heterogeneous group of conditions characterized by a sudden decrease in the glomerular filtration rate, manifested by an increase in serum creatinine or oliguria. In the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), AKI is one of the most common conditions found. Several factors, including age, infection, sepsis, shock, heart disease, mechanical ventilation, and multiple organ failure cause the increase in the incidence of AKI in children. This study aimed to determine the incidence and risk factors for AKI in critically ill children in the PICU of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. Methods. This study was an observational analytic with a cross-sectional design. This study used secondary data based on the medical records of patients treated at the PICU. Critically ill children aged 1-18 years who were treated at the PICU of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang in the period of 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2021 were included while existing kidney dysfunction before being admitted to PICU and not fulfilled medical records were excluded to the study. Abstract

Spinal instability can be caused by various conditions including an illness, trauma, and degenerative processes affecting one or more of the three spinal subsystems. These three subsystems are the spine and ligaments, back muscles, and the nervous system work synergistically to maintain spinal stability. Until now it is still difficult to identify spinal instability. Low back pain (LBP) affects 60-80% of the world's population and in the United States causes losses of around $15-50 billion each year. For several decades, a muscle training program has been the main program that recommended to solve LBP, based on the premise that the muscle subsystem is a subsystem that can be repaired and improved, a muscle training program is developed and applied in the management of NPB. This literature review focuses on aspects of stabilization exercises in the management of low back pain with and without spinal instability.
