Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has substantially changed the world. Social, economic, culture as well political landscapes have been forced to adapt to a new normal—a previously unfamiliar or atypical situation that has become standard, usual, or expected. This has, to some degree, obstructed economic activity throughout many sectors, with important aftermaths for businesses and households. Companies that have stopped operating will lose revenue, and, therefore, may not be able to repay the loan. Equally, households where family members lose their job or leave will experience a decrease in income which, in turn, will not be able to pay their loans or credit installments. This phenomenon will result not only in lost revenue but also to losses which has the potential to negatively affect bank profits and capital. This paper is aimed at analyzing the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic towards sharia commercial banks’ performance in Indonesia. The dependent sample t-test was performed to test the proposed hypotheses. It was revealed that the banks’ performances were not totally negatively affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. The growth rate of total assets the capital adequacy ratio (CAR), non-performing financing, and operating efficiency ratio were not negatively affected by this pandemic, however, returns on assets, financing to deposits ratio, and net operating margin were negatively affected by the pandemic.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the determinants of farmer participation in sharia microfinance institutions.  The study area covers Siak Regency and Bengkalis Regency, Riau Province. Respondents were taken as many as 30 respondents in Siak and 32 respondents in Bengkalis. The probit regression model is used to explain the factors that influence farmer participation in sharia microfinance institutions. Farmer loans are used for working capital, buying seeds and daily necessities. Most of the financing is wakalah wal mudhárabah and very few borrows in the form of wakalah wal musháraka. The results showed that the factors that influence farmer participation are education, dependency ratio, value of liquid assets owned, and farmers' income. The farther the farmer's house is from the location of the shariah microfinance institution, the less opportunity to participate. Other independent variables included in the model have no significant effect on farmers' opportunities to participate in sharia microfinance institutions in the two districts.

Abstract

This study aims to find empirical evidence that the financing provided by Islamic banking in Indonesia has a positive effect on economic growth and reduces income inequality. The method used in this study is an analysis of Structural Equation Model PLS using WarpPLS. The analysis shows the empirical evidence that Islamic banking financing of the MSMEs sector has a significant positive effect on economic growth and a significant negative effect on income inequality. Economic growth has also been shown to have a negative effect on inequality. However, the analysis results show that the economic growth is unable to mediate the relationship between financing of the MSMEs sector toward income inequality. This study concludes that financing the MSMEs sector by Islamic banking can increase economic growth in Indonesia and impact reducing people's income. The contribution of this research is that the financing of the MSMEs sector by Islamic banking must be increased because it can increase economic growth and reduce income.

Abstract

The North East region of Nigeria has been experiencing the devastating impact of Boko Haram insurgency which triggered humanitarian crisis and destruction of infrastructure, leading to many becoming internally displaced persons in their country. The Federal Government and the Northeast State Governments, alongside the local and international Non-governmental organizations and development partners have been mostly providing relief services and materials to the IDPs, but despite all these efforts, there is still a funding gap, thus the need to bridge this vacuum; to supplement the efforts of governmental and non-governmental organizations in providing a long term and sustainable welfare model. It is against this backdrop that this study aims at unlocking the potentials of waqf financing model in catering for short-term and long-term welfare of IDPs in the Northeast and how the model could be properly utilized to complement the efforts of governmental and non-governmental organizations in the region. Multistage sampling method was employed in selecting respondents for the study. In the first stage, three States were purposively selected out of the six States of the region based on the devastation level by the insurgency. Thematic Analysis was employed as the method of data analysis. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to summarize and interpret the results of the thematic analyses of the data obtained. The findings of this research have shown the potentials of Waqf financing in bridging the funding gap of IDPs welfare in the north-east. The study also found out that food and clothing are the most critical areas that require immediate attention in the Waqf based IDPs welfare and that, the Investment Waqf Model will be the best means of financing the IDPs Welfare programme in the Northeast due to its modest unique potential advantages over other models. Finally, the study also identified that Conversion of IDPs Support Waqf to Less privilege Support Waqf in case of return of IDPs to their respective communities is the best exit plan for Waqf based IDPs welfare model amongst all other listed exit plans. Key Words: North-East, IDPs, Welfare and Waqf Financing

Abstract

Palm sap is produced from male flower bunches that are cut off and tapped. Palm sap tapped by palm farmers is valuable since it generates profit and blessing for farmers. This study aims to determine and analyze the production of palm sap by sugar palm farmers in Rokan Hulu Regency, Riau Province, which has reached the Optimal Mashlahah. The execution of mashlahah in production activities is laba and blessing. Thus, palm sap producers will be capable of determining the combination of laba and berkah in realizing optimal mashlahah. The non-technical content of blessings is found in resources (inputs), results (outputs), and the production process. The data analysis method used was a quantitative method with descriptive data analysis. The model used was the "Comparative Model Approach" with two forms of production stages, namely the production stage containing 95 percent of sharia elements (optimal mashlahah) and the production stage containing < 95 percent of sharia elements (not optimal mashlahah). The data analysis technique in this research is the descriptive technique. The analysis of the production stages used quantitative analysis by examining aspects of resources (inputs), production processes, and results (outputs). These three aspects were analyzed based on physical attributes such as ownership of sugar palm plants and the beneficial value for palm sap producers.Based on the results of the study, it was found that the production of Palm sap in Rokan Hulu Regency, Riau Province had not yet reached the Optimal Mashlahah. This conclusion goes in line with the comparative approach, in which it is stated that the stages of palm sap production based on sharia standards was still far lesser than 95 percent, namely (100 - 46.67) = 53.33 percent. The results of this research provide contribution through recommendation and knowledge for palm sap farmers to apply sharia-based production activity as taught in the Qur'an. This study also instills and grows Islamic values through Qur’an recital groups. Keywords: Profit, Optimal Mashlahah Optimal, Palm Sap
