Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic that hit Indonesia changed learning patterns from offline to online using technology as media. Hence, Arabic language learning must be well designed but still contains elements of 21st century life skills. This study aims to explore the design of 21st century skills-based Arabic learning which was held during the Covid-19 pandemic at Thursina International Islamic Boarding School Malang, Indonesia. This research adopts a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and document studies. The data collected were analyzed using the theory of Miles and Huberman, namely reducing, presenting, and verifying. Furthermore, the data is validated using data triangulation and data sources. This research shows that the implementation of 21st century skills can be done online during the Covid-19 pandemic; achievement indicators refer to the content of elements in 21st century skills known as 4C (critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity & inovation) terminology; while the challenges of implementing 21st century skills stem from the skills of teachers in operating technology when presenting subject matter to students. The findings of this study describe that 21st century skills encourage students to become globally competitive human resources. The researcher recommends the next research to test the effectiveness of internalizing 21st century skills with online learning models. Abstract

The present quantitative study was conducted to investigate Indonesian high school English teachers’ attitudes towards the uses of instructional technology (IT) during the Covid-19 pandemic-driven online learning. The study used a survey method of distributing an online questionnaire several months into the Covid-19 pandemic, within July 2020. 114 Indonesian high school English teachers participated in the study. It found that the teacher participants generally had positive attitudes towards the uses of IT in English online classes. They believed that IT improved teacher-student relationships, creativity, and innovation, as well as brought positive changes towards their teaching. However, more than half of them also reported that they had more failures than success stories when using IT during the pandemic. They did not believe that IT made learning more effective either. These seemingly ambivalent attitudes may be attributed to the sudden changes from the face-to-face mode of instruction to the online one during the pandemic leading to the unpreparedness of all parties involved including teachers. Based on the findings, implications and contributions are stated alongside the possible limitations and directions for future studies. Abstract

This study examined the relationship between demographical factors and coping strategies in higher education students. A total of 606 students from a large public university in the Indonesia completed a survey that included measures of demographical variables (such as gender, age, living area, siblings, spending in a month, part-time job, and living arrangement) and coping strategies (such as problem focused, emotional focused, and disengagement). The results of the study indicated that having a part-time job was significantly correlated with coping strategies, in particularly problem-focused coping and emotion-focused coping. While gender, age, living area, siblings, spending in a month, and living arrangement, were not observed to be significantly correlated with coping strategies. The findings of this study have a crucial implications for understanding the relationship of demographical factors affect coping strategy in university students. Furthermore, these findings may inform the development of interventions to support university students’ mental health. Future research should consider employing participants from various background and a longitudinal design to comprehensively understand the relationship between demographical factors and coping strategy in university students.

Abstract

Project-based learning (PjBL) was one of the learning strategies that can develop students' scientific skills in the 21st century. This study used a qualitative approach by analyzing several articles published in biology education journals in Indonesia from 2015–2022, focusing on studying the implementation of project-based learning on biological materials. The current study reveals that there has been a decline in the number of publications over the past four years. Among these studies, the dominant research design is quantitative. In addition, high school students and environmental content were the most targeted subjects and content, respectively. ANOVA and tests are the most commonly used data analysis techniques and instruments. Meanwhile, the most widely measured skills as learning outcomes are critical and creative thinking. Based on what this study found, a number of suggestions have been made to do more research on PjBL and to test other 21st century skills. Abstract

Religious moderation was an important value in the life of modern society. The article aimed to anayze the practice and implications of religious moderation in Indonesian Islamic boarding schools based on theo-anthropocentric values. This research was qualitative field research with a phenomenological approach. The source of the research data was Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia and taken by representatives of the regions of East Java and Southeast Sulawesi as one of the largest Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia. The research participants were 30 people including, the leaders of the pesantren, the caretakers of the pesantren, and the students of two major Islamic boarding schools in East Java. Data collection was done by interview technique. The data analyst follows a procedure that begins with data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. This result showed three main keys to the practice of religious moderation. First, the practice of moderation was in harmony between technology or theory and its application in the field. Second, the moderation attitude in the pesantren and its environment could prevent the emergence of radicalism. Third, this moderation practice also fosters and forms a tolerant and democratic attitude toward all the differences that exist. The results of this study could serve as a simple guide in applying of diversity moderation in other areas. The existence of limitations on the validity of the data and the depth of analysis was a note that needs to be completed in the future. Abstract

The presence of Ma'had Al-Jamiah at an Islamic religious college must be a laboratory for internalizing the values of religious moderation. The internalization process must run in line with the social demands of society through higher education institutions. This research was field research with a qualitative descriptive type, namely to reveal the process of internalizing the values of religious moderation to students at Ma'had al-Jamiah IAIN Padangsidimpuan. Collecting data used observation techniques, interviews, and documentation. Meanwhile, to analyze the data used triangulation, namely collecting data and classifying, presenting, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that the process of internalizing the values of religious moderation using the theoanthropoecocentric approach (divinity, humanity, and the environment) was carried out with a learning process that was programmed into several parts, namely strengthening divine values compared to fiqh values that vulnerable to differences, prioritizing the concept of humane life through a pattern of living in a dormitory with values of harmony, togetherness, mutual respect for differences in understanding in religion, and creating an attitude of loving the environment. These three aspects are mutually reinforcing because they have a very close relationship. This study concludes that students who understand the true faith have a tolerant human attitude, and would appreciate God's creation in the form of the universe.
