Abstract

This study investigates the socio-cultural transformation of the Bakumpai community in Tumbang Samba, Central Kalimantan, driven by a major shift from river-based to land-based life. Traditionally reliant on riverine systems for livelihood, mobility, and identity, the community has undergone fundamental changes due to infrastructure development and the prohibition of illegal logging and mining. The objective of this research is to explore the dynamics of social change in this context, particularly how internal resilience and external pressures intersect to shape new social patterns. Employing a qualitative research design, the study used interviews, observations, and applied grounded theory through open coding procedures to generate conceptual categories. The findings reveal five key domains of transformation: spatial reconfiguration, occupational transition, technological integration, reorganization of social relations, and cultural reinterpretation. These shifts mark a profound redefinition of identity, economy, and interaction—from water-bound collectivism to land-based functional differentiation. The adoption of mobile technology, the relocation of settlements and trade centers, and the diversification of economic activities signify a move toward a digitally connected land society. In conclusion, the study offers a substantive theory of transition from river dependency to networked land adaptation, demonstrating how communities co-produce change by blending traditional values with modern modalities in response to policy, infrastructure, and ecological restructuring.

Abstract

This article examines the role of istigāśah in shaping social ethics and collective morality through the study of the religious practices of the Jama’ah Mantab in the Ogan Ilir region, Indonesia. Istigāśah not only functions as a spiritual ritual, but also as a medium of moral transformation in the social life of the members. This research is a field research with a qualitative approach and phenomenological methods. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of routine istigāśah activities. The analysis is carried out with reference to the theory of social constructionism, which emphasizes that social realities, including moral values, are formed through symbolic interaction and the process of construction of common meaning within religious communities. In addition, the theory of moral transformation is also used to explain the dynamics of ethical change in the members. The results of the study show that istigāśah plays a role in internalizing values such as patience, honesty, solidarity, and empathy, as well as strengthening collective awareness, social attachment, and moral identity. Thus, istigāśah not only strengthens individual spirituality, but also forms a more harmonious social order. This research contributes to the development of the study of social ethics and sociology of religion by emphasizing that collective religious practices such as istigāśah can be an effective instrument in building collective morality in society.

Abstract

Pacagoya is imbued with symbols, meanings, and values. This qualitative phenomenological study investigates the significance of rituals within Kalaodis village, serving as a manifestation of Pancasila values that advocate for the protection of the natural environment. The research utilized a combination of interview data gathered from customary officials, as well as scientific journals, books, and pertinent documents. Value theory was employed for the analysis, leading to the reduction, presentation, and synthesis of data to uncover the meanings and values inherent in the rituals. The findings indicate that Pacagoya embodies ethical values through the principle of Bobeto, which serves as a guiding framework, reminding individuals of the importance of not acting arrogantly toward nature. This principle is further exemplified by the concept of Legu dou. Bobeto, which represents customary norms, expresses aspects of global diversity, whereas Marong reflects the spirit of mutual cooperation in the management of agricultural land. Pacagoya integrates the relationships between humans, nature, and the Creator, symbolizing a harmonious balance that aligns with the First Principle of Pancasila. Furthermore, the interactions among individuals, alongside their civic responsibilities to manage and protect their environment—particularly forests—underscore the values associated with the Second Principle of Pancasila. In this context, Bobeto exemplifies the responsiveness of the customary community and plays a vital role in social supervision, reflecting the Third Principle of Pancasila. The norms embodied in Bobeto are binding for the people of Tidore, illustrating the values inherent in the Fourth Principle of Pancasila by fostering awareness and accountability in decision-making processes concerning environmental protection. Additionally, Bobeto functions as a mechanism of self-regulation, promoting equilibrium between rights and responsibilities. Equitable treatment of the natural environment contributes to the welfare of the community, aligning with the values of the Fifth Principle of Pancasila. The mandate of Bobeto serves as a representation of prudent behavior, actualized in contemporary practices through the Pacagoya tradition, which conveys essential moral messages regarding environmental stewardship. This study offers significant theoretical and practical contributions by emphasizing the values of Bobeto and Marong within the context of the Pacagoya ritual, thereby highlighting the necessity of integrating these values into various dimensions of life, particularly in the development of social values and the enhancement of the Pancasila Student Profile.

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of religious values, profit orientation, and perceived risk on Muslim investor preferences in female-centered peer-to-peer (P2P) lending. It is situated at the nexus of Islamic finance, gender-focused fintech, and behavioral economics. The analysis underscores the increasing participation of investors in digital financial platforms that cater specifically to female borrowers. A quantitative method is applied, employing Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM–PLS) to analyze data collected from 212 respondents. The results indicate that religious values, profit orientation, and perceived risk significantly shape Muslim investor preferences. Among these factors, perceived risk exerts the strongest influence, followed by religious values and profit orientation. These findings suggest that perceived risk plays a dominant role in investment decision-making, even within frameworks guided by religious principles. This study contributes to the literature by integrating religious, economic, and behavioral perspectives to advance the understanding of investor preferences in Sharia-compliant financial innovations. The results highlight the importance for fintech platforms to align strategic design with investor perceptions of risk and religious adherence to foster greater engagement in female-centered P2P lending.

Abstract

This study seeks to analyze the socio-cultural dynamics among multiethnic and religious communities within the Bosowa Indah housing area of Makassar city, with an emphasis on promoting social integration. Utilizing qualitative methods through a case study approach, data were gathered via direct observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The research focuses on social integration and socio-cultural relations, drawing upon theories grounded in functional structural paradigms, including Parsons' AGIL theory and Durkheim's concept of social solidarity, as well as symbolic interactionism and additional population theories. The findings indicate that Bosowa Indah is inhabited by a diverse urban population, with social interactions categorized into three types: formal interaction, informal interaction, and limited interaction. These interactions give rise to social and cultural products, reflected in established systems of values and norms, habits, and community practices that encourage social integration. Social integration is assessed through various dimensions: the establishment of trust among residents, the cultivation of shared values, cultural practices that foster a harmonious and peaceful society, and the development of a common identity. The results of this study offer significant theoretical insights for the advancement of sociology, particularly in the realm of urban sociology within a functional structural paradigm. Additionally, these findings can serve as a valuable reference for multiethnic community groups aiming to sustain social integration.

Abstract

The development of interreligious studies has increasingly gained significant attention in global academic literature. However, most existing research still tends to focus on the dynamics of interreligious relations in Western countries. Theoretical and practical contributions from the Asian region—including the richness and complexity of its interreligious interactions—have not yet received adequate scholarly attention. This article aims to analyze interreligious relations in Indonesia by referring to field data collected through interviews with Muslim, Christian, and Kaharingan communities in the Central Kalimantan region. Using Homi K. Bhabha’s theoretical framework of the Third Space, this study highlights how interfaith interactions unfold among Islamic, Christian, and local Kaharingan communities in two villages: Pendahara and Tumbang Kalang, in the province of Central Kalimantan. This research explores how the narrative and practice of the third space emerge in interfaith relations, whether at the personal, institutional, or societal level. This study adopts a descriptive-qualitative approach with social-cognitive discourse analysis across three dimensions: micro, meso, and macro. The study’s findings indicate that the region’s diverse religious communities are capable of living peacefully side by side, strongly supported by the local socio-cultural context rich in heritage values. Cultural elements such as Indonesian-style communalism and a spirit of collectivity serve as key drivers in fostering harmonious interfaith relationships. The study concludes that these communities actively construct “third spaces”—shared spaces that allow for common ground in diversity, while still maintaining the uniqueness of each religious identity.

Abstract

This article examines the narrative patterns of the Islamic Generation Z in Metro, Indonesia, with a focus on the interplay between understanding and the practice of religious moderation. The discussion is motivated by the significant influence of Islamic discourse in both the virtual and real lives of this generation. This influence is evident in the diverse Islamic studies disseminated by individuals from this demographic, as well as by scholars, ustāż, ulema, and kiai, through pengajian ‘religious gatherings’ and various digital Islamic platforms such as www.muhamamdiyah.or.id, NU Online, Islam Digest on Republika Online, www.muslim.or.id, islami.co, YouTube, and others. This Islamic discourse functions as a barometer for Generation Z Muslims, guiding them in the proper and proportional practice of their faith in everyday life. To foster a robust understanding of Islam, Generation Z requires a framework that considers their level of comprehension and the ease of practice. In reality, they often face challenges in sifting through the diverse information available to them, making it difficult to use it as a reliable guideline for their actions, speech, and thoughts. The findings presented in this article stem from field research utilizing a single instrumental case study approach. Data collection methods included non-participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, with analysis conducted at various stages of the research process. The results reveal two distinct types of Islamic narratives among Generation Z. The first is the functional dialectical narrative, which is grounded in logical, empirical, and methodological scientific studies and is effectively applicable in religious and social interactions within a pluralistic society. The second type is relational dogmatism, characterized by a religious narrative rooted in binding and fundamental textual arguments (fiqhiyyah-muqayyadah). This narrative serves as a singular guideline for spiritual and social interactions in a pluralistic context.

Abstract

This article critically examines the emerging practice of swinger relationships in Indonesia, analyzing its legal implications under both Indonesian criminal law and Islamic criminal law. The primary objectives are to investigate the divergent regulatory frameworks concerning adultery in the context of consensual non-monogamous relationships within Indonesian criminal law and Islamic law, the sanctions prescribed by the Indonesian Criminal Code and Islamic ḥudud law; and the scope and nature of legal protections afforded to individuals engaged in swinger practices. Employing a qualitative research design with a phenomenological approach, this study analyzes primary sources such as the Indonesian Criminal Code (KUHP) and classical Islamic jurisprudence texts, alongside secondary sources comprising scholarly articles, legal commentaries, dissertations, and expert opinions. Data collection was conducted through a systematic literature review. The findings underscore fundamental distinctions between the secular orientation of Indonesian criminal law, which criminalizes adultery only when involving at least one legally married party and requires a formal complaint for prosecution, and the religiously anchored Islamic criminal law, which categorizes zina as a ḥudud offense with fixed divine penalties and stringent evidentiary standards. Legal protections under Indonesian law emphasize procedural safeguards and due process rights to prevent arbitrary prosecution, whereas Islamic law prioritizes the protection of individual honor (ḥifẓ al-‘irḍ) and social morality through rigorous evidentiary requirements and the prohibition of false accusations (qazf). Notably, Islamic legal provisions demonstrate substantive justice by exempting pregnant and nursing women from ḥudud punishments, reflecting considerations of humanity and equity. This research contributes novel insights into the complexities of harmonizing Indonesia’s secular criminal legal framework with its predominant religious values, particularly in addressing consensual non-monogamous sexual conduct such as swinger practices. It highlights the tension between evolving social behaviors and entrenched legal-religious norms, thereby informing ongoing debates on legal pluralism and human rights protections in Indonesian society.

Abstract

This study examines the Tafsīr Al-Qur'an Al-Karīm authored by the Binjai’s Ulama Tiga Serangkai, Abdul Halim Hasan, Zainal Arifin Abbas, and Abdurrahim Haitami, within the framework of belief systems, cultural integration, and socio-political dynamics in Indonesia. Employing a critical hermeneutic approach and historical discourse analysis, the research investigates how this tafsīr not only interprets sacred texts but also functions as a medium for fostering socio-political consciousness among Muslims. The primary data source is the tafsīr text itself, supported by secondary literature on Qur’anic exegesis in Indonesia and historical studies of the period in which the work emerged. Findings reveal that the tafsīr combines tafsīr bi al-ma’thūr and tafsīr bi al-ra’y methodologies, with a strong emphasis on themes such as jihād, Islamic leadership, and the unity of the ummah. The work illustrates the adaptability of Islamic teachings within diverse social contexts and reflects a critical stance against colonialism and Western cultural hegemony. It also advocates for ethical Muslim leadership. This tafsīr remains pertinent to contemporary Islamic discourse in Indonesia, particularly in areas concerning social justice, political reform, and the interface between Islam Nusantara and transnational Islam. By situating text within context, this work exemplifies how tafsīr can serve both as spiritual guidance and as a vehicle for social transformation.
