Abstract

Smoking behavior can have a negative effect on health. It not only causes a systemic effect, but can also cause pathological conditions in the oral cavity. The World Health Organization is pursuing a strategy by replacing the use of conventional cigarettes with electric cigarettes, because they do not contain tar and carbon monoxide compounds, although some evidence says that vaping or e-cigarettes have not been proven safe. This study aims to determine the description of dental and oral hygiene and extrinsic dental stain among e-cigarette smokers in the vaper community in Tasikmalaya City. This was a descriptive study which presents a complete description of the problem under study. The study samples involved 43 respondents. The study used the assessment instruments of OHIS Green and Vermillion index and the extrinsic stain index according to Shaw and Murray. 43 respondents were willing to be examined for the mouth condition. The results of the study showed that 58% of respondents had moderate dental and oral hygiene status. 61% of respondents had moderate level of extrinsic dental stain. It can be concluded that the Vaper community in Tasikmalaya City had a moderate status of oral hygiene and extrinsic dental stain. It is recommended that future researchers can observe a comparison of oral and dental hygiene between conventional smokers and e-cigarette smokers so that it is expected to increase public knowledge about the impact of cigarettes and e-cigarettes on dental hygiene and stain.

Abstract

Rampant caries in toddlers or early childhood caries (ECC) can affect chewing and the ability to eat and drink. The prevalence of caries in the 3-4 year age group in Indonesia in 2018 was 81.5%. A recent World Health Organization (WHO) report stated that dental caries can affect children's growth. Balanced evidence shows that ECC is associated with stunting in children. Rampant caries in primary teeth hurt nutritional status, mediated by caries depth, chronic inflammation, and oral pain. A dental and oral health caries prevention program is needed to prevent stunting. This research aims to develop and test the feasibility of a Tooth Protection Model for Preventing Caries and Stunting in Early Childhood. The research method used is Research and Development/ (RD), consisting of searching for potential problems, collecting data through literature review and FGD, Design Making, Validation of three preventive dentistry experts and three pediatric dentistry experts, Revision and User Feasibility Test for 30 toddler mother. Data analysis uses an Interclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) with a two-way mixed type. The results of expert validation obtained an average score of 75 (decent category with revision), with good inter-rater reliability (ICC = 0.750). The results of user trials on 18 mothers of toddlers produced an average score of 90.67 (very feasible category without revision), with an ICC value of 0.860, meaning good reliability. The research conclusion shows that the Tooth Protection Model is worthy of implementation as a comprehensive approach to preventing caries and stunting in toddlers.

Abstract

Background: Dietary fiber is essential for maintaining digestive health, especially during emergencies with limited food availability. Objectives: To analyze the chemical, microbiological, and nutritional properties of high-fiber cereal bars designed as emergency food. Methods: This study used an experimental design. The cereal bars were made from rice crisps and oats and tested based on chemical and microbiological parameters. Chemical analysis included dietary fiber, carbohydrates, protein, fat, minerals, and vitamins while the microbiological analysis covered total plate count (TPC) and detection of pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus aureus in accordance with food safety standards from the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM). The testing was conducted from November 3–15, 2023, at PT Saraswanti Indo Genetech laboratory, Indonesia. Results: The test showed that the mixed berry cereal bar contained 9.43% dietary fiber, exceeding BPOM standards. The product was free from heavy metal contamination (arsenic, cadmium, mercury, lead, and tin) and showed no trans fats. Microbiological tests confirmed that the product was safe from pathogenic microbes, with total plate count (TPC) and Enterobacteriaceae  within safe limits. The product also did not contain Salmonella or Staphylococcus aureus. Conclusions: This high-fiber cereal bar meets strict food safety and nutritional standards, making it suitable for development as emergency food. Its high fiber content and lack of harmful contaminants make it safe and nutritious for disaster victims. Continued testing and development with diverse flavors and formulations are recommended to improve acceptance across age groups in emergency situations.
