Abstract

Facing industrial revolution 4.0 requires university students to provide themselves with a skill that they can use to compete with machines or computers. One of the skills is negotiation which involves mastering language, especially English as a means of international communication. However, learning English as a foreign language is not as easy as it seems. The students need to use a proper learning media which match their characteristics as digital native and motivate them in learning English such as multimedia. By using multimedia, the students will not only learn about language but also the skill about how to use the media or a computer to come up with industrial revolution 4.0. Thus, the researchers who are English lecturers aimed to encourage students in Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia (UTI) to use more web-based medium as a medium in learning English in a class, exclusively Powtoon. This research used a qualitative method since it disclosed how UTI students use Powtoon in a class and what their opinion toward Powtoon for learning English. During the research, the students used Powtoon in a class as a presentation medium for a half-semester because after mid-test they were divided into 13 groups to present the topics given by the lecturer. For each meeting, there were 2-3 groups presentation. At the end of the semester, the students were given questionnaire related to multimedia usage and responded that they felt motivated in learning English by using technology especially Powtoon. As a result, using a web-based medium in learning English can increase not only student’s ability to language but also technology.

Abstract

This study is aimed at describing the implementation of role play technique in English for Business class. The participants of this study were 52 students majoring informatics system at Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia who enrolled English for business I. Data were collected through observation and interview. Then, the data were analyzed by using descriptive analysis. The result of this study shows that the implementation of role play was done successfully. Students played their role well. They could use English based on its context. More exposure toward real situated activities is suggested to help students develop their English ability.

Abstract

ABSTRAKKemampuan berbicara di depan umum atau lebih dikenal dengan public speaking merupakan salah satu kemampuan yang membutuhkan ketrampilan yang sangat kompleks. Tujuan public speaking pada umumnya adalah untuk menyampaikan informasi, menghibur, ataupun untuk mempengaruhi para pendengarnya. Namun, hal ini bukanlah hal yang mudah mengingat kegiatan public speaking harus dilakukan secara terstruktur agar pesan yang dimaksudkan pembicara dapat tersampaikan dengan baik. Persiapan dan latihan yang rutin merupakan kunci suksesnya suatu public speaking. Kegiatan pelatihan public speaking ini bertujuan untuk dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa di depan umum terutama dalam menggunakan bahasa Inggris. Pelatihan dilakukan secara daring dan luring dengan pemaparan beberapa materi yang nantinya dapat dipraktikkan para siswa dalam melatih public speaking mereka. Berdasarkan hasil kuesioner dan interview, ditunjukkan bahwa para siswa sangat antusias dalam mengikuti pelatihan public speaking dan mereka menyampaikan bahwa mereka lebih percaya diri dalam berbicara di depan publik setelah melakukan pelatihan. Berdasarkan evaluasi yang dilakukan, tugas-tugas public speaking para siswa juga menunjukkan hasil yang memuaskan. Dengan hasil ini, diharapkan kemampuan public speaking siswa, terutama dalam bahasa Inggris dapat semakin meningkat sehingga dapat membawa dampak yang baik bagi mereka di masa yang akan datang. Kata kunci: Public speaking, Pelatihan. ABSTRACTThe ability to speak in front of public or better known as public speaking is an ability that requires very complex skills. Generally, the purpose of public speaking is to convey information, to entertain, or to influence the audience. However, this task is not an easy thing because public speaking must be carried out in such a structured manner so that the message intended by the speaker can be conveyed properly. Preparation and regular practice are the keys to a successful public speaking. This public speaking training activity was aimed to improve students’ speaking skill especially public speaking using English. The training was carried out online and offline which were fulfilled by the explanation of several materials that can be practiced by the students in training their public speaking skill. According to the result of questionnaire and interview, it could be seen that the students were enthusiastic in joining the training and students were also more confidents in doing public speaking. Moreover, based on the evaluation, the students’ public speaking assignments also showed satisfactory results. With this result, it is expected that students’ public speaking skill, especially in English, can more improve significantly so that it can bring good impacts for the students in the future. Keywords: Public speaking, training.

Abstract

Students of SMKN 1 Talangpadang have been conducting online assessment using Google Classroom during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study is to reveal students' views towards the use of Google Classroom as an online assessments tools during covid-19 pandemic at the secondary school level. The research used a qualitative descriptive method. The data in this study were obtained from questionnaires and interviews with all X OTKP 2 students in SMKN 1 Talangpadang. The data in this study were analyzed through data condensation, data display, and conclusions. This study found that students’s views toward the use of Google Clssroom as an assessment tool during pandemic was favorable. Students view that using Google Classroom as an online assignment tool is very beneficial for students doing online assignments during the pandemic, because doing online assignments with Google Classroom is simple, practical, and flexible.

Abstract

Motivation is one of the essential parts of the learning process. Motivation can be interpreted as the students’ desire to learn something because the higher motivation, the better students will be. The purpose of this study is to explore the level of student motivation toward the use of Google classroom in learning English during the Covid-19 pandemic at SMA N 1 Sukoharjo in the academic year 2020/2021. This study also finds out the dominant type, whether intrinsic or extrinsic motivation. This study uses descriptive qualitative, and the technique uses for collecting the data are questionnaires and interviews. The data were presented by using percentage, frequency, mean score, and standard deviation (S.D). The finding of this study showed that the mean score of intrinsic motivation (3.60) was higher than extrinsic motivation (3.43). The mean score of overall motivation is 3.51 was considered a moderate level of motivation. However, the majority of students learn English best because of their intrinsic motivation. Students are interested in learning English and love to take English classes. Students can do the assignments given by the teacher and want to master the English material taught by the teacher. To master English, students have to study hard and practice it in their daily life. So, teachers must be able to provide various teaching strategies to cope with both intrinsically motivated students and extrinsically motivated ones.

Abstract

Pembelajaran aktif atau active learning merupakan salah satu strategi yang efektif untuk mengajar bahasa Inggris karena sifat pembelajaran bahasa itu sendiri membutuhkan interaksi satu sama lain. Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat yang dilakukan di MA Ma’arif 9 Kotagajah, Lampung Tengah bertujuan untuk memberikan pendampingan kepada para siswa di sekolah tersebut untuk belajar Bahasa Inggris secara aktif dan terlibat secara langsung dalam setiap aktifitas pembelajaran. Terdapat empat sesi dalam kegiatan pengabdian ini, yaitu: 1) penyampaian materi dan motivasi belajar Bahasa Inggris, 2) tips and trik, serta best practice dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris, 3) penerapan active learning dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris, dan 4) motivasi lanjut studi setelah menguasai Bahasa Inggris. Hasil kegiatan ini menunjukan bahwa para siswa yang pada awalnya memiliki motivasi yang rendah dan persepsi kurang baik terhadap pelajaran Bahasa Inggris mengalami peningkatan motivasi belajar Bahasa Inggris setelah mengikuti kegiatan pendampingann pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Hal ini ditunjukan dengan respon positif siswa selama mengikuti kegiatan dan hasil kuesioner terkait persepsi siswa terhadap kegiatan. Kegiatan serupa sebagai kelanjutan proses pembelajaran juga diharapkan guna tercapai tujuan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris secara menyeluruh. Kata kunci: active learning, Bahasa Inggris, pendampingan pembelajaran.

Abstract

ABSTRAKKegiatan pelatihan ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan Bahasa Inggris Siswa melalui Game-Based Application Kahoot. Masih banyaknya siswa yang beranggapan bahwa Bahasa Inggris  merupakan mata pelajaran yang sulit. Oleh karenanya, penggunaan aplikasi pembelajaran berbasis game dapat menjadi salah satu media untuk meningkatkan motivasi siswa dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris sehingga kemampuannya pun akan ikut meningkat. Kemampuan Bahasa Inggris ini nantinya akan dapat menjadi modal bagi siswa untuk melanjutkan ke Pendidikan tinggi dan masuk ke dunia kerja. Peserta pelatihan terdiri dari 36 siswa kelas XII SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Kota Agung. Berdasarkan hasil kuesioner dan observasi di lapangan, para peserta pelitahan menunjukkan antusiasmenya dalam proses pelatihan dan di akhir pelatihan, mereka mendapatkan pengetahuan baru dan pengalaman baru dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris, serta peningkatan kemampuan Bahasa Inggris terutama dalam hal speaking dan reading.Kata Kunci: aplikasi pembelajaran; Bahasa Inggris; Kahoot; pelatihan ABSTRACTThis training activity aims to improve students' English skills through Kahoot Game-Based Application. There are still many students who think that English is a difficult subject. Therefore, the use of game-based learning applications can be one of the media to increase student motivation in learning English so that their abilities will also increase. This English skill will later become an asset for students to continue to higher education and enter the world of work. The training participants consisted of 36 students from class XII of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Kota Agung. Based on the results of questionnaires and field observations, the participants showed enthusiasm in the training process and at the end of the training, they gained new knowledge and new experiences in learning English, as well as improved English skills, especially in speaking and reading.Keywords: English; game-based learning; Kahoot; training

Abstract

English has a significant role in the education and economic sectors. However, learning English has been challenging for students, especially when the implementation of online learning has significantly increased. This research aimed to reveal the reality of English online learning in an Indonesian university, focusing on synchronous and asynchronous technological applications used and challenges faced by students. By employing a qualitative approach, data were collected by observing five English language skills subjects as well as interviewing thirteen volunteered students. The findings revealed that Zoom and Google Meet were used in synchronous online English language classrooms mainly for lectures, discussions, and presentations. Meanwhile, Spada, the university YouTube channel, and the university online portal were used asynchronously for assignments, projects, information updates, peer corrections, forums, and learning materials. Some challenges in synchronous online learning included unstable internet connection, expensive internet data, incompatible gadgets, and low self-confidence. Meanwhile, in asynchronous online learning, some challenges included difficulties in comprehending learning materials, overloaded assignments, and lack of personal time commitment. This research suggested teachers and relevant stakeholders incorporate balanced synchronous and asynchronous online learning in their English language classrooms, improve infrastructure and technology for online learning, and prepare students for the challenges of tomorrow.

Abstract

Research on pre-service teachers (PSTs) has increasingly focused on their integration of technology-based tools during teaching practicums. However, limited attention has been given to how PSTs navigate these tools in rural school settings. This study examines the types of technology-based tools selected by PSTs and explores their perspectives on their use in English teaching. Employing a qualitative descriptive research design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with eight PSTs from Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia who taught in two public rural schools during their teaching practicum. The interview data were transcribed, coded, and analyzed thematically. Findings revealed that PSTs primarily utilized AI, web-based, and game-based tools in their teaching. Among AI-based tools, ChatGPT was the most frequently used. Canva, Pinterest, and Bilibili were commonly selected for web-based tools, while Kahoot! Quizizz and Wordwall were preferred for game-based learning. PSTs expressed positive views on these tools, highlighting improvements in students’ learning satisfaction, motivation, and classroom engagement. However, they also faced challenges, particularly regarding accessibility and technical limitations in rural areas. Additionally, students had limited digital competencies, which must be addressed to prepare them for future technological advancements. Teaching obstacles also stemmed from the incompatibility of students’ digital devices, further complicating technology integration in the classroom. Despite these barriers, such challenges should not hinder the educational process. Students' limitations can be addressed through collaborative learning strategies and enhancements in instructional quality. Therefore, this study recommends infrastructure improvements to expand technology accessibility and implement adaptive teaching strategies that maximize available resources in rural settings.
