Abstract

The Community Service Activity (PkM) is an integral part of the implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, which aims to apply academic knowledge for the welfare of society. This PkM was conducted on May 21, 2025, at the Cultural Heritage Site of the National Hero Teuku Umar’s Tomb in West Aceh, as part of the 10th National Sociology Conference attended by sociology lecturers from various universities across Indonesia. The program aimed to preserve the historical site while strengthening the social and ecological values of the surrounding community through environmental revitalization and tree planting activities. The approach used was a problem-solving method with stages of preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The results showed improvements in environmental cleanliness and aesthetics, as well as active community participation in preserving the site. Beyond ecological benefits, the activity fostered social cohesion and collective awareness of cultural heritage preservation. Academically, this PkM serves as tangible evidence of the Tri Dharma implementation and demonstrates sociology’s practical contribution in addressing social challenges and supporting sustainable local development.

Abstract

First-time voters play a crucial role in the electoral and regional election (Pilkada) processes and represent one of the most vulnerable groups to the influence of misinformation, which often proliferates during election periods. Their high exposure to social media significantly increases the likelihood of encountering and spreading hoaxes. Therefore, it is essential to enhance their understanding and awareness to prevent them from becoming both targets and agents of misinformation. As part of a community engagement initiative ahead of the 2024 regional elections, lecturers from Teuku Umar University conducted a political education program aimed at senior high school students—who largely comprise first-time voters. This outreach focused on raising awareness about the dangers of hoaxes and how to avoid their spread. The primary objective of this initiative was to increase first-time voters' awareness of the importance of verifying information before accepting or disseminating it. In addition, it sought to provide knowledge on how to identify hoaxes and recognize credible information sources. The method employed was participatory socialization, involving presentations on hoaxes, video screenings illustrating their dangers and impacts, and interactive Q&A sessions between facilitators and student participants. This activity successfully enhanced participants’ understanding and encouraged them to actively seek accurate information, thereby reducing the risk of being misled by false narratives

Abstract

Abstract Learning history through historical sites, like the Poe Teumeureuhom tomb in Aceh Jaya, can boost students' historical awareness by connecting lessons to relevant local history. However, this study found that even though these historical sites are close to several schools, activities that involve visiting them for history lessons are quite rare. The lack of integration of local history into the curriculum and the underutilization of historical sites as learning resources diminish students' understanding of their cultural identity. By using a site-based learning approach, students can learn history not just through theory but also by directly appreciating local historical values. This article suggests several steps to address these issues, such as incorporating local history into the curriculum, using technology to spread historical information, and organizing educational pilgrimage activities. The goal is to strengthen historical awareness and enhance pride in cultural heritage among students in Aceh Jaya.

Abstract

The Aceh conflict, one of the longest separatist struggles in Indonesia, lasted for nearly three decades and caused severe social, political, and economic consequences. The turning point occurred after the 2004 tsunami, which opened the door for peace negotiations between the Government of Indonesia and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM). This study aims to analyze the political transformation of GAM following the signing of the 2005 Helsinki Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), focusing on the dynamics of demobilization, reintegration, and democratization in Aceh. Using a historical approach and library research, data were collected from primary sources such as official documents and archival records, as well as secondary sources including books, journals, and reports. The findings show that the MoU Helsinki not only ended armed conflict but also initiated significant political transformation by allowing the establishment of local political parties and expanding Aceh’s autonomy. However, challenges persist in reintegration programs, governance of special autonomy funds, and center local relations. While GAM successfully transitioned from armed resistance to formal politics, issues of social justice, economic inequality, and elite dominance continue to hinder sustainable peace. This study highlights that Aceh’s experience offers important lessons for conflict transformation and peacebuilding in post-conflict societies.
