Abstract

This research investigates the functions of commissive illocutionary acts in Goodfellas (1990), with the aims of identifying their types and examining their contextual meanings. The study focuses on character dialogues containing commissive intent, specifically promises, threats, offers, refusals, and swears. The data consist of selected character utterances systematically documented from the film script and scenes through careful note-taking, and they are analyzed using a qualitative descriptive approach. Speech act classification is based on Searle et al.’s (1985) framework, while contextual meaning is interpreted using Holmes’s (2013) sociolinguistic model of social dimensions, which accounts for factors such as social distance, relative power, and formality. The integration of sociolinguistic perspectives in pragmatic analysis has been widely recognized as essential for understanding language use in socially embedded contexts (Laba & Wijayanti, 2022; Laba & Narlianti, 2025). A total of five commissive utterances were analyzed, each shaped by distinct contextual and interpersonal factors. The findings show that integrating Holmes’s sociolinguistic model provides a deeper understanding of how commissive acts are realized in film discourse, thereby contributing to the study of speech acts in cinematic communication.

Abstract

Negation is an essential aspect of communication. In English, one common morphological strategy to express negation is by attaching negative prefixes to base forms. This study analyses the morphological structure of words containing negative prefixes found in the Wrecker novel (Hiaasen 2023), based on the framework proposed by Plag (2023). In the novel, we identified a total of 89 unique words containing negative prefixes; words with the prefix un- is the most prevalent. The classification of these words reveals two distinct structural patterns (that are represented as tree diagram). The first pattern consists of a root word combined with a negative prefix, negating its meaning without altering its grammatical category. The second pattern involves more complex words, where two to three morphemes are used along with a suffix, modifying both the meaning and the word class. The findings contributed to enhance understanding of morphological patterns in literary texts, encouraging future studies to broaden the scope by analyzing additional works across various genres and authors to determine whether similar structures might persist or vary in different contexts.

Abstract

Abstract. This paper is aimed at describing the parts (paragraphing and contents) of problem-solution short essay necessary for the assessment and analyzing the approach used in designing the rubric. The data are taken from the sample of problem-solution short essay which belongs to the argumentative writing. The data were collected by using the documentation method and was analyzed qualitatively. The results show that there are two main parts in the analytical assessment rubric for the problem and solution short essay namely contents and grammar with the percentage values 60% and 40% respectively. The assessments of contents cover the suitable Title of the essay, Paragraphing, and Task response. Each of them has scoring scales. Meanwhile, grammar assessments that contains omission, addition, selection, ordering, plus the use of capital/small letters are measured by counting the numbers of errors. In order to get the total score of the essay, the excel sheets with certain formula are made. The top-down approach is appropriate in designing the analytical rubric for this type of short essay. It comprises of four steps, they are 1) choosing a framework for the intended assessment, 2) determining the criteria of the assessment, 3) adapting an existing rubric and designing the rubric for the specific learning purposes, and 4) use the rubric. The last step requires further observation and evaluation to test the effectiveness of the rubric that has been designed. Keywords: Assessment Rubric, Writing, Problem-Solution, Short Essay, Parts of Essay

Abstract

This research aims to find out symbolic representation of emotion found in ‘Sonnet from the Portuguese’ by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, using Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory of denotation and connotation. Focusing on five selected sonnets (1, 6, 14, 22, and 43), the research highlights important symbolic elements, such as metaphor and imagery of love, longing, doubt, passion, and suffering, demonstrating the poet’s emotional depth. Although Browning’s thematic and biographical elements have been examined in earlier research, this analysis closes a significant gap by methodically interpreting the semiotic structures that support the Sonnet’s emotional expression. The study provides fresh insights into the relationship between language and emotion in Victorian love poetry by utilizing Barthes’ framework to show how superficial imagery (denotation) is transformed into more profound emotional meaning (connotation). This study is important because it increases our knowledge of Browning’s literary technique and shows how semiotic theory may clarify the complex emotional representation found in poetry.

Abstract

This study, titled Positive Politeness Strategies Used by the Characters in Elemental: Forces of Nature Movie, investigates the various forms of positive politeness strategies used by the characters and the underlying factors influencing their application within the movie script. The data were sourced from the official script of Elemental (2023), a film produced by Pixar Animation Studios. The research employs a qualitative method and is grounded in the politeness strategy framework developed by Brown and Levinson (1987). Findings reveal that the characters' dialogues reflect all fifteen types of positive politeness strategies. These include showing concern for the hearer, using exaggerated expressions, applying in-group markers, making promises, and encouraging shared involvement between speaker and hearer. The use of these strategies is shaped by three major factors: the intended payoff, the level of social distance, and the relative power between speakers.

Abstract

Humans interact through communication. In conversations, they tend to practice communication accommodation, where utterances are adjusted among interlocutors. One of humans’ first social interactions is with their family. In a multilingual family, communication accommodation often takes place. The aim of this study is to determine the forms of communication accommodation that occur in conversations between multilingual family members and to determine the factors that motivate their emergence. The data in this study are in the forms of oral conversations between multilingual family members. They were collected using observation method where in some parts the researcher was involved and not involved in the conversations. Data were also collected through basic tapping technique, complemented with note-taking technique. They were then analyzed quantitatively and analytical results were presented formally. The results showed that convergent and divergent communication accommodation process occurred in conversations between multilingual family members. In general, convergent accommodation is more common as compared to divergent accommodation. Different communication accommodations were revealed when they are discussed from the perspective of completeness and direction of the accommodation. In addition, they are driven by different factors.

Abstract

This study explores how the company profile of PT Asuransi Kredit Indonesia (Askrindo) functions as a semiotic text that symbolically communicates institutional values. Using Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory, the research analyzes verbal and non-verbal signs—including language, imagery, layout, and color—to uncover layers of denotation, connotation, and myth. Supported by Stuart Hall’s theory of representation and Elliot & Maier’s color theory, the findings reveal how design elements collectively construct a cultural narrative aligned with the AKHLAK values mandated for Indonesian state-owned enterprises. These values—such as trustworthiness, competence, harmony, adaptability, and collaboration—are not explicitly stated but are embedded in the company’s symbolic choices. The study also highlights representational gaps, notably the underemphasis of loyalty, suggesting selective ideological messaging. Overall, the company profile is positioned not merely as a branding tool but as a vehicle for institutional myth-making and value performance.
