Abstract

Syntax is a part of linguistics that studies how words are combined into sentences and phrases. In this study, we focus on analyzing the syntax of noun phrases in Indonesian. We use the treebank analysis technique to identify the syntactic structure of noun phrases in Indonesian. Study results show that noun phrases in Indonesian have complex and varied syntactic structures and that the context and types of noun phrases play an important role in influencing the syntactic structure of noun phrases. These findings are important for understanding how noun phrases are formed and understood in Indonesian and how it affects language processing.

Abstract

Using descriptive qualitative research, this study investigates the perlocutionary acts found in the film script of the 2017 film Kingsman: The Golden Circle by  Matthew Vaughn. The objectives of this study are to explain the types and the context of the perlocutionary acts found in the dialogues of the film script. Pragmatic approach is applied and a total sum of 10 data in form of dialogues were found, which were categorised based on Searle™s 1969 Speech Act theory. Furthermore, the context of situation of all the data were explained with the basis of pragmatic approach supported by Yule™s theory 1996. Miles & Huberman™s theory (1994) is assigned in analyzing the data. Thus, this study concluded that the five types of Perlocutionary Acts appear in the film script, with Directives acts to appear most often, followed by Assertives, and finally Commissives, Expressives and Declaratives. However, the reader must have a deep understanding in context of situation to understand the meaning of the text. This study contributes to give a new insight in perlocutionary acts based on context of situation. Authors suggest to futher researcher to analyze perlocutionary act in gender context and to apply context of situation in avoiding misinterpretation and misact.

Abstract

A literary work is a forum for the expression of the writer's ideas, beliefs, physical experiences, and the writer's imagination. Language in the form of symbols is interesting to study semantically. Semiotics is the study of symbols in three aspects: icons, indices, and symbols. The Wednesday series, created by Alfred Gough and Miles Miller, tells the story of a young girl who is strictly forced to study at a school named Nevermore Academy. This school is for freaks and outcast students, and she does not want to be in it. She does not like this school, but as time goes on, she grows to like it even more, with all of its mysteries, sadism, people, and monsters. The questions of this study are (1) how is the semiotic aspect of symbolism included in “Wednesday,” (2) how is the indexical aspect of semiotics included in “Wednesday,” and (3) how is the semiotic aspect of symbolism included in “Wednesday”? This study uses qualitative methods. The results of this study are 33 data for icons in the entire series of Wednesdays created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. 21 data for an index of the entire series of Wednesdays created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. 21 data for an index of the entire series of Wednesdays created by Alfred Gough and The symbols for all series of Wednesday created by Miles Millar are 6 data

Abstract

Batak Toba is one of the tribes in North Sumatra. In Batak custom where men buy women in marriage. The position of men is higher in the Batak tribe because it follows the patriarchal lineage where men are the successors of the descendants or clans. In general, women do not have an important position or position in every traditional event that is carried out. Because men take all the important roles in every traditional Batak Toba event. In this analysis, because of gender is an interesting thing to discuss, especially in Batak Toba ceremony. This article use Liberal and Radical Feminism (in Tong, 2006). The objective of this research is to promote fairness and balance in the roles and responsibilities of men and women during the event is the goal of gender equality in Toba Batak wedding ceremonies. This attempts to guarantee that both partners actively participate in and enjoy the ceremony on an equal footing, and that traditions and customs do not perpetuate gender-based discrimination. Therefore, it is important to apply justice which refers to gender equality in the Batak Toba tribe. With the passage of time, it is hoped that this tradition will continue to empower women to be able to communicate with elders.

Abstract

This study examines the failure of political persuasion in public discourse by examining the language strategies used in statements by members of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) during the civil unrest on August 25–28, 2025. Using a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach, this study analyzes how word choice, expressions of judgment, use of modality, and ideological positions in political speech actually fuel public anger rather than producing a persuasive effect. The research data includes verified public statements, media transcripts, and official quotations circulating during the escalation period. The results show that the failure of persuasion occurred due to a discursive mismatch between elite political narratives and the socio-economic conditions of society. These findings enrich the study of political discourse by viewing the failure of persuasion as a linguistic process influenced by power imbalances, lack of context sensitivity, and ideological differences.

Abstract

This study is urgent because a gendered linguistic analysis of “When I Was Your Man” and “Flowers” reveals how popular music constructs, reinforces, or challenges contemporary gender perspectives and relationship narratives. This study examines gendered perspectives in pop song lyrics through a qualitative linguistic analysis of Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man” and Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers.” The main research objectives are to identify and compare the linguistic features used to construct gendered voices in both songs and to analyze how emotional expression and self-identity are represented through these gendered perspectives. Song lyrics function as cultural texts that reflect social constructions of gender, particularly in emotional expression and identity formation. Previous studies have largely focused on female representation or gender bias using semiotic, discourse, or computational approaches, leaving a gap in comparative linguistic analysis across genders. To address this gap, this research applies lexical, semantic, and syntactic analysis within the framework of gender and language studies. The data consist of the official lyrics of the two songs, collected through documentation techniques and analyzed qualitatively. The findings reveal clear contrasts between male and female perspectives. The male perspective is characterized by lexical choices expressing regret and emotional vulnerability, semantically framing love as loss, and syntactically relying on reflective and conditional structures. In contrast, the female perspective emphasizes empowerment and independence through assertive diction, self-directed meaning, and simple declarative sentence patterns. This study contributes to gender and language research by offering a comparative linguistic perspective on how male and female identities are constructed in contemporary pop music.

Abstract

The urgency of this research lies in examining language and gender representation in The Story of an Hour to uncover how Kate Chopin challenges patriarchal ideology and constructs female autonomy through narrative discourse. This study examines how linguistic features construct gender representation in Kate Chopin’s The Story of an Hour. While previous studies have largely focused on feminist themes and ideological interpretations, limited attention has been paid to the linguistic mechanisms through which gender ideology is articulated. Addressing this gap, this study applies feminist linguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis to explore how language reflects women’s emotional experience and social position within a nineteenth-century patriarchal context. Using a qualitative research design, data were collected through documentation of the short story text and analyzed through close reading. Linguistic features such as lexical choices, figurative language, imagery, narrative voice, and discourse structure were examined. The findings reveal that female experience is represented through indirect and emotive language, with freedom portrayed as an internal and temporary realization. Narrative voice confines women’s expression to private consciousness, while authoritative discourse reinforces patriarchal interpretations. Nevertheless, narrative irony enables subtle resistance. Overall, this study concludes that gender ideology in The Story of an Hour is not simply conveyed through thematic content but is fundamentally constructed through linguistic choices, narrative voice, and discourse structures. By foregrounding language as a site of power and resistance, the study highlights the crucial role of linguistic analysis in uncovering how gendered meanings are produced, sustained, and subtly challenged in literary texts.

Abstract

This study examines gender differences in the use of question tags and performative utterances in the film Enola Holmes (2020). Using Jennifer Coates’ theory of gender and language and speech act theory, the research examines how these linguistic features function in relation to power, politeness, and identity construction within a patriarchal Victorian context. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with data taken from the film script and analyzed through pragmatic and textual approaches. The findings show that female characters, particularly Enola Holmes, use question tags more frequently and for diverse pragmatic functions, such as emotional confirmation, rhetorical questioning, and negotiation of meaning. These uses are not signs of uncertainty but serve as strategic interactional resources to assert agency and challenge male authority. Male characters tend to use more performative utterances in the form of commands, reflecting their institutional power. Overall, the study supports the view that gendered language differences are socially constructed.
