Abstract

Kim Nam Jun (RM) the leader of BTS who spoke conveyed the contents of his speech representing the other six personnel. Speak Yourself is an inspiring giving activity for teenagers and young people around the world. This study aims to find out and analysis the social meaning of the speech by Kim Nam Jun. This study used the descriptive qualitative method. This researchs only focuses on Kim Nam Jun's speech to find the social meaning. The analysis found that Kim Nam Jun's speech contained data that matched the research criteria. The data is in the form of text in speech transcripts. Speech has 784 words. In analysis the data, the researchs read the transcript in the form of a speech text via the website and then determine and analysis social meaning contained in the speech. Then, describes the results of the analysis based on Geoffrey Leech's theory and can then make conclusions regarding the researchs results. The results also show Kim Nam Jun's speech that there is a social meaning to giving people the opportunity to express opinions, be confident, and do all the things they want to do.

Abstract

Using descriptive qualitative research, this study investigates the perlocutionary acts found in the film script of the 2017 film Kingsman: The Golden Circle by  Matthew Vaughn. The objectives of this study are to explain the types and the context of the perlocutionary acts found in the dialogues of the film script. Pragmatic approach is applied and a total sum of 10 data in form of dialogues were found, which were categorised based on Searle’s 1969 Speech Act theory. Furthermore, the context of situation of all the data were explained with the basis of pragmatic approach supported by Yule’s theory 1996. Miles & Huberman’s theory (1994) is assigned in analyzing the data. Thus, this study concluded that the five types of Perlocutionary Acts appear in the film script, with Directives acts to appear most often, followed by Assertives, and finally Commissives, Expressives and Declaratives. However, the reader must have a deep understanding in context of situation to understand the meaning of the text. This study contributes to give a new insight in perlocutionary acts based on context of situation. Authors suggest to futher researcher to analyze perlocutionary act in gender context and to apply context of situation in avoiding misinterpretation and misact.

Abstract

This study, conducted in a sociolinguistic setting, looks into the communication strategies utilized by female characters in the animated film "Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus." It looks at how these characters' verbal choices reflect and maybe perpetuate gendered norms and expectations, building on Coates' theory of conversational strategies. The study uses a qualitative analysis minimal responses, tag questions, questions, hedges, commands and directives, swearing and taboo language, as well as compliments used by the female characters in the film. This improves comprehension of the complicated connections between children's stories, language, gender, and social interaction. The goal is to provide a deeper understanding of the communicative preferences exhibited by these characters. Looking at women's words can reveal a lot about how gender identities are constructed and transmitted in animated storytelling. This study not only enriches the sociolinguistic academic discourse but also prompts a profound reflection on the role of language in shaping social norms. By providing a nuanced perspective on the communicative strategies of female characters, this research invites critical engagement with the dynamics of language, gender, and social interactions within the realm of animated narratives. This allows us to think more deeply about societal communication in movies. The results of this study indicate that women show characteristics of a gentler communication style with the use of limited gentle responses, subtle tag questions, and limited application of compliments. This preference prioritizes inclusion and brevity of communication over other techniques such as instructions, hedging, and taboo language. Abstract

Cyberbullying is defined as bullying, threatening, and even harming a person using electronic communication which has been happening lately and can be seen in our daily life. The purpose of this study is to identify the types of cyberbullying used by the commenter and understand how they bully others in their comments. Things that might happen such as mental down, death, etc. This study applies a qualitative descriptive method. In order to analyze the data, researchers employ an interactive analysis model that Miles and Huberman (1992:23) proposed. The result of this study finds 15 comments containing instances of cyberbullying. The findings are three types of cyberbullying are present on the "Tribun Medan TV" YouTube channel” namely flaming, harassment, and denigration. The Authors suggests the further researcher to investigates cyberbullying in community-based race.

Abstract

This research is about Deixis in All Too Well movie script. The objectives of this research are to find out the types and functions of Deixis in All Too Well movie script. Therefore, this research used the theory of Yule. This research was conducted using qualitative methods. The data of this research is Dylan and Sadie’s dialogue from the All Too Well film. The results show that there are three types and three functions of Deixis in All Too Well movie script. The types of deixis found are personal deixis, spatial deixis and temporal deixis. Furthermore, the functions of deixis are pointing. This pointing is to identify the person (who), location (where) and time (when) here, which are designated as person deixis, spatial deixis, and temporal deixis.

Abstract

The study of mixed marriages is always an interesting topic to talk about, especially regarding the topic which is the impact of inter-ethnic mixed marriages. This study aims to describe the phenomenon of mixed marriages associated with the maintenance of traditional language. This paper applies qualitative research on language maintenance by Javanese-Batak Toba Families in Medan. The research data were derived from observation, interviews, and audio-recorded family conversations, parents’ role at home is the most dominant factor in maintaining vernacular language in inter-ethnic families, and vernacular language maintenance in inter-ethnic families is succeeded by language use at home and activities at home and surroundings while Javanese-Batak Toba families are patriarchy. The practices of vernacular language at home and in surroundings guide vernacular language maintenance (Pauwels,2016). The analysis displays that the relationship between culture, attitude, and prestige requires parents to maintain the vernacular language. Batak Toba language is maintained dominantly by families. Mother language is maintained. We conclude parents who have a positive attitude to their culture to show their prestige enforce children to maintain the vernacular language. This study recommends that further research explore vernacular language maintenance across three generations of Javanese-Batak Toba families.

Abstract

This study used translation techniques to translate the source language into the target language and analyzed cultural terms in translating the Indonesian folklore "Hasil Sebuah Kejujuran" from Indonesian to English. Based on the issues, the study sought to categorize and identify the cultural words from the source language (SL) into the target language (TL), as well as to identify and describe the translation methods that were employed. The descriptive-qualitative method was the research approach employed. The information utilized comes from the translation of Indonesian cultural phrases from the folklore into English. Up to eighteen data in Indonesian cultural phrases were found in this investigation. There are two data points (11,10 %) of society and up to 16 data points (88,90 %) relating to cultural terminology and language and communication. The following translation methods were employed to translate the cultural words into English: literal, up to 6 data points (33, 30%), couplets, up to 1 (5, 60%), and description, up to 11 (61, 10%). Abstract

A literary work is a forum for the expression of the writer's ideas, beliefs, physical experiences, and the writer's imagination. Language in the form of symbols is interesting to study semantically. Semiotics is the study of symbols in three aspects: icons, indices, and symbols. The Wednesday series, created by Alfred Gough and Miles Miller, tells the story of a young girl who is strictly forced to study at a school named Nevermore Academy. This school is for freaks and outcast students, and she does not want to be in it. She does not like this school, but as time goes on, she grows to like it even more, with all of its mysteries, sadism, people, and monsters. The questions of this study are (1) how is the semiotic aspect of symbolism included in “Wednesday,” (2) how is the indexical aspect of semiotics included in “Wednesday,” and (3) how is the semiotic aspect of symbolism included in “Wednesday”? This study uses qualitative methods. Abstract

This research aims to find out how comparative forms are formed in the Karonese language. The author used qualitative methods in carrying out this research because in-depth understanding and analysis are needed to complete this research. This research applied Herring’s theory in the book The Complete English Grammar Rules (2016). The results of this research show that there are two comparative forms found in padan si mbaru or Karonese language Bible, first by using a combination of the affix ter-en and the second using the article reh and the suffix -na. In the Karonese language, the comparative forms are formed by adding the affix ter-en in the base adjective and also using the article reh and the suffix -na in the bas adjective. Based on the results of this research, the author found 33 forms of comparative adjectives, namely, 6 forms using a combination of the affix ter-en and 27 forms of adjectives using the article reh and suffix -na.
