Abstract

Resilience is an important factor that can help a person to get through difficult phases in life. Current research focuses on dynamic resilience, which can be developed through interaction with the surrounding environment. In this study will be further analyzed the effect of each source of perceived social support on adolescent resilience in Tangerang Regency, as one of the areas prone to crime. Participants in this study were 429 junior high school students aged 13-16 years old. The study used The 14-Items Resilience Scale (RS-14) and The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) which had previously been adapted by researchers. The results showed that perceived social support was a predictor of adolescent resilience in Tangerang Regency with a medium effect size, R2 = .166, F(1, 427) = 84.861, p = .000. In general, there is no difference between the social support received by male and female adolescents, t(427) = 0.402, p = .689. However, it was found that female adolescents feel more supported by friends compared to male adolescents, t(427) = -3.041, p = .003.

Abstract

Screen use has become a significant part of daily life for today’s preschool aged children. Gadgets are used for playing, watching, learning, and communicating. Previous research has found that the screen time of preschool aged children in Indonesia is well above the recommended duration. This may lead to the emergence of problem behaviors. The purpose of this scoping review is to study the relationship between screen time and problem behavior in Indonesian preschool aged children. The literature search in this study is done through several electronic databases, including Garuda, Sinta, and Google Scholar. We found 9 papers that focused on screen time and problem behavior in preschool aged children, with 2 qualitative studies and 7 quantitative studies. The results showed that there is a relationship between screen time and problem behaviors, specifically ones related to emotion, social skills, and hyperactivity/attention. Therefore, screen time in preschool aged children needs to be monitored in order to reduce the risk of problem behaviors. Abstract

Family resilience is an important ability for family in facing various challenges throughout the lifespan. The study about family resilience of Minangkabau ethnic people needs further exploration due to the increase in divorce rate in the last three years, indicating that these families were not resilient. The cause of the divorce was related to matrilocal residency (husband lives in wife’s house after marriage). This residency has the potential to cause the intervention of the wife’s family to the relationship of husband and wife, therefore leading to the lack of authority in the husband's role. This condition poses a risk to husbands to experience gender role discrepancy and discrepancy stress. The purpose of this study was to examine the contribution of gender role discrepancy and discrepancy stress to family resilience by involving 139 Minangkabau men who lived in the wife’s family house around the age 18-50 years old. This study used a quantitative research method. Sampling technique used in this study was a purposive sampling technique. All data collected were analyzed by using multiple regression method. Results showed that gender role discrepancy and discrepancy stress contributed significantly to family resilience by 10.5%. However, partial analysis showed that discrepancy stress alone did not contribute significantly to family resilience.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant changes in various aspects and habits of early childhood, including the use of gadgets. Changes in early childhood learning programs from face-to-face to online, school closures, to social activity restrictions have forced children to spend more time at home. This scoping review-based research was conducted to help describe how the use of gadgets in early childhood during the pandemic took place. There are 19 studies reviewed from the screening results of three online databases, namely Taylor & Francis, ScienceDirect, and Sage Journals. The results of the scoping review found that (1) there was a significant increase in the use of gadgets and screen time the early childhood; (2) parents are the main factor causing children to be exposed to gadgets; (3) excessive use of gadgets has impacts on developmental problems (e.g; fine motor, gross motor, lack of social interaction) and health problems (e.g; sleep disturbances) in early childhood.

Abstract

Early adolescence is a critical period for emotional and cognitive development, often accompanied by emotional turbulence due to hormonal and neurodevelopmental changes. Adolescents with a family history of bipolar disorder are at a higher risk of experiencing emotional regulation problems. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) in improving emotion regulation abilities in a female adolescent with a familial risk of bipolar disorder. A single-subject design (N=1) with pre-test and post-test measurements was employed. The participant was a 14-year-old girl with difficulties regulating anger and a father diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The REBT intervention comprised 5 sessions, with 1 pre-intervention session, and 1 follow-up session. Emotion regulation was measured using the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire-Child Adolescent (ERQ-CA) and the PROMIS Emotional Distress—Calibrated Anger Measure. Results indicated a significant increase in the use of cognitive reappraisal strategies and a decrease in expressive suppression strategies following the REBT intervention. The participant’s anger expression decreased from severe to mild categories. A shift from irrational beliefs to rational beliefs was also observed, supporting improved emotion regulation abilities. This study supports the effectiveness of REBT in enhancing emotion regulation in adolescents with a familial risk of bipolar disorder. REBT helped the participant better manage anger, highlighting its potential as an effective intervention strategy for addressing emotion regulation issues in at-risk adolescents. These findings have important implications for clinical practice and the development of interventions for at-risk adolescent populations.

Abstract

Indonesia has a variety of ethnicities and cultural values that shape people’s behavior in everyday life. Family resilience is one of these factors. This research aimed to examine the differences among three distinct ethnic groups in relation to key family resilience components (family belief systems, family organizational structures, and family communication patterns). A total of 672 married participants aged 19 to 65 years (Mage = 42.07, SD = 9.720) reported their family resilience using the Indonesian version of the Walsh Family Resilience Questionnaire, and the data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and ANOVA. The results revealed that in terms of the family belief system, Javanese people are significantly different from Minangnese and Bataknese people and are the most prevalent; in terms of the family organizational structure, only Minangnese and Bataknese people are significantly different, whereas Minangnese people are most prevalent; and in terms of family communication patterns, Javanese people are significantly very different from the others and are the most prevalent. Overall, family resilience is only significantly different for Javanese and Bataknese people, where Bataknese people have the highest level of family resilience.

Abstract

Family resilience in adolescence measures the ability to cope with challenges and disruptions within the family and engage in positive adaptation in their role as children. To address the limitations of the availability of family resilience measurement tools in the Indonesian language, this study aims to adapt and test the reliability and validity among adolescents. One widely used measurement tool for assessing family resilience internationally is the Family Hardiness Index (FHI), developed as part of The Resilience, Adaptation, and Well-Being Project. The testing was conducted on 276 participants aged 12–17 years (M = 14.5; SD = 1.7), with a gender distribution of 124 males (45%) and 152 females (65%). Psychometric property testing revealed that this adapted instrument met reliability criteria with a Cronbach's alpha value of 0.75 and fulfilled construct validity criteria using confirmatory factor analysis. Through these findings, it is hoped that research related to family resilience for Indonesian adolescents will continue to advance, particularly among families facing various challenges and disruptions. Additionally, multiple suggestions and implications arising from this adaptation are discussed in the concluding section of this article.
