Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to interpret entrepreneurial characters in novels as cultural constructs embedded with values and ideology. Through a hermeneutical approach, literary works are understood as social discourses that reflect societal value systems, rather than merely aesthetic products. The study responds to the limitations of normative approaches in entrepreneurship education, which often emphasize practice and outcomes, by highlighting the importance of symbolic and narrative dimensions in literary texts. A qualitative method employing hermeneutic text analysis was applied to two novels by Asma Nadia: Bidadari untuk Dewa and Cinta Dua Kodi. Data were collected through close reading, literature review, interpretive validation, narrative excerpt classification, and categorization based on entrepreneurial character indicators. The findings reveal seven dominant entrepreneurial traits: responsibility, risk-taking, achievement motivation, self-confidence and optimism, collaboration, creativity and innovation, and leadership. Using the hermeneutic circle method, each trait was analyzed as a construction of meaning, emerging not only from narrative progression but also from the symbolic interaction between text and reader. These narratives show that entrepreneurial characters in the novels are shaped by the tension between personal idealism, religious values, and socio-economic dynamics. In-depth interpretation of dialogues, monologues, and dramatic situations enables a comprehensive reading of entrepreneurial actions as representations of cultural and spiritual identity. This research contributes to the interdisciplinary integration between literature and entrepreneurship studies by emphasizing the narrative dimension in shaping entrepreneurial character. The results demonstrate that literary texts can serve as reflective media in entrepreneurship education to foster ethical, resilient, and value-oriented entrepreneurial mindsets. The study recommends the strategic use of literature as a pedagogical tool to enrich value-based approaches in entrepreneurship development.

Abstract

General Background Language serves as a crucial pragmatic tool for human communication and societal interaction. Specific Background Expressive utterances specifically function to communicate a speaker's psychological attitude toward various daily situations. Knowledge Gap While previous pragmatic studies extensively explore language in formal contexts, media, and literature, natural conversational dynamics within rural communities remain largely undocumented. Aims This qualitative descriptive study aims to describe the forms and functions of expressive speech acts within everyday community conversations in Tulo Village. Results Observational and conversational data analysis reveals five primary forms of psychological expressions: thanking, congratulating, apologizing, blaming, and praising. The dominant occurrence of apologizing signifies a community characterized by active efforts to preserve societal relationships and resolve communication discomfort. Functional applications include expressing gratitude, offering appreciation, conveying regret, and delivering constructive criticism. Novelty This research provides distinct empirical documentation of localized pragmatic characteristics in Tulo Village, shifting the analytical focus from formal discourse to authentic rural interactions. Implications These findings demonstrate the critical role of linguistic politeness in maintaining relationship cohesion, offering a foundational reference for understanding culturally responsive pragmatic frameworks. Highlights The pragmatic analysis identifies apologizing as the most dominant linguistic behavior. Residents frequently utilize thanking, congratulating, praising, and blaming to convey psychological attitudes. These communicative strategies actively resolve interactional discomfort and sustain polite relationships. Abstract

The Sawer tradition is an important stage in Sundanese traditional wedding ceremonies that incorporates various verbal and nonverbal symbols as a medium for conveying advice, prayers, and cultural values to newlywed couples. However, the symbolic meanings embedded in this tradition are not fully understood by the community, including some members of the Sundanese ethnic group themselves. This study aims to describe and analyze the forms and meanings of verbal and nonverbal symbols in the Sawer tradition of Sundanese wedding ceremonies in Beringin Jaya Village, Bumi Raya District, Morowali Regency. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach using Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic theory. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, which includes data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings reveal that verbal symbols in the Sawer tradition are expressed through four categories of ritual songs: the opening song, the song for the groom, the song for the bride, and the closing song. These symbols represent religiosity, responsibility, commitment, fidelity, cooperation, harmony, and divine blessing. Meanwhile, the nonverbal symbols, including yellow rice, candies, money and coins, and an umbrella, symbolize prosperity, harmony, economic well-being, protection, and family happiness. The findings indicate that the Sawer tradition functions as a medium for transmitting cultural, moral, social, and religious values and plays a significant role in preserving the cultural identity of Sundanese migrant communities.
